The Boy With No Power

ECLIPSE: THE UNBOUND

Volume One — The Awakening Saga

Chapter 1 — The Boy With No Power

The first thing Ethan Cole learned about the world was that everyone wanted to know what you could do.

Not who you were. Not what you dreamed about. Not what kind of person you would become.

What could you do?

In a world where strange energy flowed through humanity, power had become part of everyday life. Children were tested for it before they were old enough to understand what the results meant. Schools advertised their strongest students. Companies recruited talented Resonance users. Guardians became celebrities.

And those who possessed nothing were quietly forgotten.

Ethan had spent sixteen years learning what it felt like to be forgotten.

He stood in front of the mirror on the morning of his final Resonance assessment and adjusted the collar of his school uniform. Dark hair fell over his forehead, refusing to stay where he wanted it. His blue eyes looked back at him with the tired determination of someone who had spent years hearing the same answer.

Nothing.

Zero.

Powerless.

On the desk beside him sat the invitation that had changed his life.

ASTRA ACADEMY.

Elite Guardian Training Division.

For most students, receiving an invitation from Astra was an achievement worth celebrating. Astra Academy trained some of the strongest young Resonance users in the country. Its graduates became Guardians, researchers, instructors, and breach-response specialists.

Ethan had received his invitation for a different reason.

Potential.

At least, that was what the letter said.

He picked it up and read the final sentence again.

“Your Resonance potential remains undetermined. Further assessment is required.”

Undetermined.

That was the polite way of saying nobody knew what was wrong with him.

“Still staring at that thing?”

Ethan turned.

Aiden Brooks leaned against the bedroom doorway, already wearing his uniform. His messy reddish-brown hair looked as if he had fought a hurricane and somehow lost.

“You're late,” Ethan said.

“I’m never late.”

“You are literally standing in my doorway instead of being outside.”

“That’s because you’re the one who is always early.”

Aiden grinned.

Then his expression softened.

“You nervous?”

Ethan looked back at the invitation.

“A little.”

“Liar.”

“Fine. A lot.”

Aiden laughed. “There we go.”

The two boys walked through the city together.

Astra City was already awake.

Large screens displayed Guardian rankings above the streets. Advertisements showed young Resonance users demonstrating abilities for cameras. A woman lifted a damaged car with Reinforcement energy while a crowd applauded. A Guardian team moved across the roof of a nearby building, their uniforms glowing with protective Field techniques.

Nobody stopped to stare.

This was normal.

Ethan hated that it was normal.

At the corner, a little boy was showing his mother a tiny flame dancing above his palm.

“Look!”

The flame flickered.

His mother smiled.

“You'll be a great Guardian someday.”

Ethan walked past them.

Aiden noticed his silence.

“Don't compare yourself to everyone else.”

“I wasn't.”

“You were.”

Ethan sighed.

“Maybe I just want to know what it's like.”

“What?”

“To have something.”

Aiden didn't answer immediately.

Then he bumped Ethan's shoulder.

“You have me.”

Ethan smiled.

“That's not a power.”

“Speak for yourself. I'm incredibly powerful.”

“Your last test was fourteen percent.”

“Fourteen percent of me is still more powerful than one hundred percent of you.”

Ethan stopped walking.

Aiden froze.

“Bad joke?”

“Very bad joke.”

“Yeah. I deserved that.”

By the time they reached Astra Academy, the streets had become crowded with students.

The academy rose above the surrounding buildings like a fortress and a palace built together. Tall silver towers surrounded a massive central structure. Bridges connected different wings. Training fields stretched beyond the main gates, enclosed by transparent barriers.

At the entrance stood a stone monument.

Seven figures were carved into it.

Ethan had seen the monument before, but today something about it felt different.

He slowed.

For half a second, the stone seemed to move.

Not physically.

It was more like the shadows around the monument had shifted toward him.

Ethan blinked.

Everything was normal.

“You coming?” Aiden called.

“Yeah.”

Ethan looked back one last time.

The monument remained silent.

Inside the academy, students were directed toward the assessment hall.

Hundreds of candidates filled the enormous chamber.

Some were excited. Some were terrified. Others were already showing off.

A boy near the entrance surrounded his hands with blue flames. A girl floated several books around herself without touching them. Another student casually punched a training pillar hard enough to make it shake.

Ethan kept his hands in his pockets.

He could already imagine the whispers.

That was him.

The powerless kid.

The anomaly.

Aiden leaned closer.

“Hey.”

“What?”

“No matter what happens in there, don't let them decide who you are.”

Ethan looked at him.

Aiden's usual grin was gone.

He meant it.

Ethan nodded.

“Thanks.”

Then the doors opened.

The assessment hall was silent.

At its center stood a large black crystal mounted inside a circular machine.

A researcher in a white coat stood beside it.

“Candidates will be called individually. Place your hand against the Resonance Crystal when instructed. The system will measure your Resonance output, affinity, stability, and potential.”

A screen above the crystal displayed the previous student's results.

“Eighty-two percent.”

The crowd murmured.

The student smiled proudly.

The researcher gestured toward the next candidate.

One by one, the numbers appeared.

Seventy-four.

Sixty-nine.

Ninety-one.

Even a result in the forties was considered respectable.

Ethan watched.

His palms began to sweat.

“Aiden Brooks.”

Aiden stepped forward.

“Try not to embarrass me,” Ethan whispered.

Aiden glanced back.

“Watch closely.”

He placed his hand on the crystal.

The machine came alive.

Red-orange light exploded across the chamber.

The crystal displayed:

RESONANCE: 63%

AFFINITY: MANIFESTATION

PRIMARY ATTRIBUTE: FIRE

The students reacted immediately.

“Sixty-three!”

“That’s good!”

Aiden pulled his hand away with a triumphant smile.

Ethan laughed.

“Show-off.”

“You're jealous.”

“Absolutely.”

For a few seconds, Ethan forgot about himself.

Then his name was called.

“Ethan Cole.”

The laughter disappeared.

Ethan walked toward the crystal.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

He could hear whispers.

“Isn't he the one with no Resonance?”

“I heard he failed three times.”

“Why did Astra even invite him?”

Ethan stopped in front of the machine.

The crystal looked ordinary.

Black.

Cold.

Waiting.

The researcher gave him a neutral expression.

“Place your hand on the crystal.”

Ethan raised his hand.

He touched it.

Nothing happened.

The machine remained silent.

No light. No vibration. No energy.

The screen stayed blank.

Ethan waited.

The researcher frowned.

“Please hold your hand there.”

He did.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Still nothing.

Then the crystal made a sound.

Crack.

Everyone froze.

A thin line appeared across the black surface.

The researcher stepped forward.

“What...?”

The crack vanished.

The machine shut down.

The screen flickered once.

Then a single number appeared.

0%

Silence filled the room.

Someone laughed.

It started quietly.

Then another student joined.

A few whispers became dozens.

“Zero?”

“That’s impossible.”

“His Resonance is actually zero?”

Ethan stared at the screen.

He had seen that number before.

But somehow seeing it here hurt more.

The researcher checked the machine.

“System malfunction?”

Another technician hurried over.

They restarted the device.

Nothing.

They tried again.

Nothing.

The result remained unchanged.

ZERO PERCENT.

Ethan slowly removed his hand.

His fingers were trembling.

Aiden pushed through the crowd.

“Ethan—”

“It’s fine.”

“It isn’t.”

“I said it’s fine.”

Ethan forced a smile.

The researcher looked at him with confusion rather than cruelty.

“Ethan Cole, your Resonance output is registering at zero percent.”

“I know.”

“However...”

The researcher stared at the crystal.

“There was an irregularity.”

Ethan looked up.

“What kind?”

“I don’t know.”

For a moment, the researcher looked genuinely unsettled.

Then the academy’s warning system suddenly beeped.

A single black line appeared across the assessment screen.

Not a number.

Not a percentage.

A symbol.

Ethan stared at it.

An eclipse.

The lights in the room flickered.

For one heartbeat, the world seemed to become completely silent.

Then something spoke inside Ethan’s mind.

[UNIDENTIFIED RESONANCE DETECTED.]

Ethan’s eyes widened.

Nobody else reacted.

Another message appeared.

[ECLIPSE PROTOCOL: INITIALIZATION FAILED.]

His breath caught.

“What...?”

The screen returned to normal.

The symbol disappeared.

The crystal went dark.

Nobody seemed to have seen the messages.

Ethan looked around the room.

Everyone was talking. The researcher was checking the machine. Aiden was asking what had happened.

But Ethan could still feel something.

Something deep inside him.

Something that had been sleeping.

For sixteen years, Ethan Cole had believed he was powerless.

He had believed the tests.

He had believed the doctors.

He had believed every person who told him that his future would be ordinary.

But beneath the silence, something had been waiting.

And now—

it had opened its eyes.

Far beneath Astra Academy, behind seven sealed doors, an ancient chamber trembled.

Dust fell from a stone ceiling.

Seven enormous seals surrounded a black throne.

The first seal glowed.

A figure standing in the darkness slowly lifted its head.

Two pale eyes opened.

“Finally,” the figure whispered.

Back in the assessment hall, Ethan looked at his trembling hand.

A faint black mark had appeared across his palm.

It resembled a crescent swallowing the light around it.

He closed his fist.

Whatever had just awakened inside him...

he knew one thing.

His life would never be ordinary again.
