Summary

The rich have everything money can buy. In PRIME, that includes people. Behind the glittering walls of the world's most powerful families, cruelty is entertainment, human lives are possessions, and the rules are written by those who will never have to suffer their consequences. Trapped among people who can destroy lives without ever staining their perfect reputations, one wrong move could cost more than freedom. The nightmare isn't being claimed. It's what happens when your owner decides you belong to them.

The Empty Seat:-

The Venetian palazzo had hosted kings, presidents, and men who preferred their names kept out of history.

Tonight, it hosted PRIME.

Rain moved across the lagoon in grey sheets. Inside the great hall, a thousand candles burned in iron stands, and their light lay across a table of black marble so long that the people at either end could barely see each other’s faces. Fifteen families sat around it. Each had a carved chair and a silver nameplate. Each had a history nobody spoke of aloud.

Lorenzo Moretti sat at the head of the western side, heavy and loud, with a gold ring on every finger. The Morettis had built their empire on shipping and debt. They never took anything by force when a signature would do, and they remembered every favor owed to them.

Across from him, Evelyn Vale smiled at nothing. The Vales owned banks, newspapers, and half the judges in three countries. They had never lost a lawsuit. When they came close, the evidence tended to vanish.

Dante Whitlock sat near the end, thin and pale, tapping a pen against his glass. The Whitlocks were old money, so old that they looked down on everyone else. Further along, the Blackwells held the ports and the men who guarded them, and spoke only when they had to.

Then there was Zelda Ashcroft.

The Ashcrofts were the quietest of the great families. They owned hotels, private clinics, and the people who worked in them. Nobody had ever heard an Ashcroft make a threat. Their enemies simply stopped appearing in public. Zelda sat three seats from the center, dressed in black, one ankle resting over the other. She was the most powerful woman in PRIME, and she had never needed to raise her voice to prove it.

Behind her, against the wall, stood her Doll. Sam kept his eyes lowered. He had belonged to Zelda for three years. No one in the room looked at him for long.

The seventh seat on the eastern side was empty.

No one mentioned it. They were too busy arguing.

“They crossed into another family’s land,” Lorenzo said. “That is not a mistake.”

“It was deliberate,” said Evelyn.

“Then it was disrespect.”

“Or it was interesting,” said Zelda.

The room turned toward her.

“People don’t run toward danger,” she said calmly, “unless they believe something is waiting for them there.”

“What could be waiting?” Dante asked. “That is Holloway land.”

Nobody answered. Zelda’s eyes drifted to the empty seat.

“Don’t,” Lorenzo said quietly.

“I haven’t said his name.”

“You didn’t need to.”

The doors opened.

There was no announcement. No one stood. Zane Holloway walked in as if the meeting had been waiting for him, and not the other way around. He handed his coat to an attendant and crossed the hall without looking at anyone.

He was twenty-three, the youngest owner in PRIME, and he had not chosen a doll in his lifetime. The Holloways had climbed past every older name at the table in a single generation. Nobody understood how. Nobody dared to ask.

He sat down.

“Continue,” he said.

Lorenzo slid a folder across the marble. “Seven Dolls escaped their owners and crossed into your territory.”

Zane read in silence. The only sound was the rain against the tall windows.

“They were caught,” Lorenzo added. “All seven. Alive.”

“Good.”

Evelyn frowned. “You aren’t surprised.”

“I was told.”

“They crossed three checkpoints. They broke the oldest rule we have.”

Zane closed the folder.

“Bring them in.”

Seven girls were led into the hall with their wrists bound. Their dresses were torn from the forest, and their faces were pale with fear and no sleep. Guards set them in a line before the council.

Every head at the table turned.

Not toward the girls.

Toward Zane.

It happened in every room he entered. Even angry, even half-listening, Zane Holloway was a man people looked at twice. Sharp jaw. Dark eyes. A face that belonged on a coin, not in a room full of killers. Women at the table lowered their glasses a second too late. Men pretended not to notice.

Lorenzo noticed. His jaw tightened.

“Look at them,” he said loudly. “They didn’t even glance at the rest of us.”

“Because they were never looking for us,” said Evelyn, her smile thin. “Only for him.”

“A boy of twenty-three.”

“A boy of twenty-three who has more Dolls begging for him than you have in your entire house, Lorenzo.”

Someone laughed. Lorenzo’s face went red.

“It isn’t complicated,” Dante said. “He doesn’t even try. We spend decades building our names, and he walks in, and the room belongs to him.”

Zane said nothing.

He sat with one elbow on the armrest, staring at the girls with pure irritation. It wasn’t anger. It was the annoyance of a man whose thoughts had been interrupted by a loud noise.

“You knew the law,” Lorenzo snapped at the Moretti Dolls.

“Yes, sir.”

“Then why?”

The youngest girl lifted her eyes.

“Because we wanted to be chosen by him.”

For half a second, the room went silent. Then it erupted.

“This is an insult to every owner here,” Lorenzo said, rising.

“It’s a compliment,” said Zelda sweetly. “Just not to you.”

“Sit down, Zelda.”

“Make me.”

“Enough,” said Dante. “The rule is the rule. Crossing territories is punished, whoever’s land it is.”

“Then punish them,” Lorenzo said. “Or are we letting him decide because he’s too handsome to be questioned?”

Zane’s eyes moved slowly to Lorenzo.

It was the first time he had looked at anyone in the room.

Lorenzo sat down.

“You lot are exhausting,” Zelda said, resting her chin on her hand. “Seven girls walked through a forest, and you’re acting as if they stole your wives.”

“They broke the law,” said Dante.

“They broke your pride. It’s different.”

Zane stood.

The argument died on every tongue.

He walked toward the line of girls. There was no hurry in his steps and no anger in his face. He stopped in front of the first one and looked at her the way a man looks at a stain on a clean shirt.

She was trembling, but she held his gaze.

“I wanted you to choose me,” she whispered.

Silence.

Three years. Every family at the table knew it. Every Doll in PRIME knew it. Zane Holloway had not chosen anyone, and here were seven girls who had risked everything for a chance he never meant to give.

He studied her for a long moment. There was no cruelty in his face. No pity either.

Only boredom.

“Remove them,” he said.

The girl smiled through her tears. “Thank you.”

“Not from the room,” said Zane.

Her smile faded.

“From PRIME.”

The guards moved. The girls began to scream. Lorenzo looked away. Evelyn raised her glass to hide a smile. The great doors closed, and the sound cut off as if it had never existed.

Against the wall, Sam’s fingers tightened on his sleeve.

Zelda noticed. She said nothing.

Zane returned to his seat and picked up his glass.

Everybody was completely relaxed. They knew exactly what Zane had meant by removing the girls from the PRIME. Every owner's doll whose head was about to be brutally chopped off in front of every single doll of the Elites was paid the amount for the loss by Zane himself.

It all happened so casually, as if it were like buying a new lollipop since you did not like the flavor of the older one.

The candles trembled. Outside, the rain kept falling on the water.

With his absolute calmness, Zane returned to his seat, his leg over the other. He patiently spoke.

“Where were we?"

Right, that was intense! Welcome to the world of crime and corruption, I guess.

One little suggestion would be to get a bit more creative with the names. You managed to tick off three of the most generic names in just a few sentences 😂

Apart from that, the chapter flows nicely, and the visual descriptions work really well to establish the setting before things start to unfold. It's a strong start to a story that feels like it could get quite dark 🫥

PARIS IN THE DARK

Loved, Loudly

Merrell Bunting: Well written, kind of quiet story, I enjoyed it. I am still a bit perplexed over whether this was a second chance mating story with choosing or completely a chosen mate story. If it is a chosen mate tale it leaves one a bit worried about a fated mate showing up. Either way it was a nice read.
