PROLOGUE
In Valdoria, everyone knew everyone.
It was hard for it to be otherwise. A town surrounded by mountains, cut off from the rest of the world, where the same faces crossed paths every morning and the same surnames had been repeated for generations.
But there was something no one seemed willing to mention.
Sometimes, someone stopped recognizing someone else.
It wasn’t a passing confusion. It wasn’t forgetting a name or the face of someone they hadn’t seen in years. It was something different.
As if they had never existed.
One morning, a woman desperately knocked on the door of a house.
“Open the door.”
No one answered.
She knocked again.
“I know you’re in there.”
She heard footsteps on the other side. The door finally opened.
A man stared at her in silence.
She breathed a sigh of relief.
“Why wouldn’t you open the door?”
The man frowned.
“Who are you?”
The woman smiled, expecting it to be a joke.
It wasn’t.
She tried to enter, but he stepped in her way.
"I’m sorry, ma’am, but I don’t know who you are.”
Her smile disappeared.
She said her name. She reminded him of places, conversations, entire years they had shared. Things only the two of them could have known.
Nothing.
The man listened to her the way one listens to a stranger telling the story of someone else’s life.
Finally, he closed the door.
The woman remained there.
Alone.
Behind her, Valdoria continued as it did on any other morning. Some people walked to work. Others talked in front of their homes. In the distance, the mountains remained motionless around the town.
No one approached.
No one asked what had happened.
Perhaps because in Valdoria, some things were better left unquestioned.
Or perhaps because, sooner or later, everyone ended up forgetting something.
Or someone.
