“I want you all to write about this,” Miss Summer says, as the marker in her right hand makes a squeaking sound while she is writing on the board. “You may start now.”
I look at the words scrawled across the white board. It simply says, ‘Summer’. Dumbfounded, I continue to stare at the word. To me, ‘summer’ is something unfathomable. After all, I’ve never heard of it prior to this. But I seem to be the only one in confusion - the rest of my classmates are writing on their foolscap papers, the scribbling sound clearly audible throughout the entire classroom. Not having the guts to ask our English teacher the definition of the word, I rummage through my bag, get out my phone, and type ‘summer’ in Google. It says, “The season between spring and autumn, in which it is usually warm or hot.”
What am I supposed to make of the results of my search? During the one-hour period of English class, I sit immobilized on my chair, venturing deeper and deeper into my made-up memories of ‘summer’.
