Chapter 1

They came first digging for gold.

Chapter 1

NEW YORK, 1992 - THE INTERNET BECAME ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC.

Under the Brooklyn Bridge to down under the Manhattan Bridge underpass, the air panting out of his lungs crystallized into a mist against the freezing cold. The tires bumped along the underpass by speeding cars steadily. The World Trade Center shone overly dreamy over a crispy moonless night-- looking as if digitally made as dreamy. Most of the floors were lit. The sky was dark.

The delicate snowflakes swayed down from the sky breezily. The East River was icy cold and hadn’t frozen over yet. It wasn't going to ice up. The slush was moving in cold fumes. The river gained power. A humanoid form flipped by the abyss. The statue of ice stood in the block of ice.

The water’s surface became slushy with patches scattered all over. The precipitation of snow accumulated from the last snowstorm that hit the city in the early hours stuck to the ground that night and for the rest of the season.

It was as if the ice age invaded the city.

The freezing cold air moving along the wavy current water blew out a whiff of rising steam fog. It was quite enchanting and cherubic that night. His steps squeaked onto the snow. He was aching to get warm up. He was strolling along the river by himself and could distinguish blocks of ice floating with the mighty flow. He inhaled the dry air into his mouth. The cold burned his lungs and made him cough. He felt sorry and rubbed on his chest. He was nose breathing here and now and exhaled by his mouth.

The accelerant was splashed on a pile of rubbish in the park bin. Under the light of his zippo lighter, it resembled a postcard of the twin towers taken from the 1980s. It caught on fire over the edges.

The man that stood next to the flames to warm up, jerked as quickly upward and stiffen.

The muffled scream stopped with a painful thud against the foundation of the bridge-- ending with the sound of shattering bones against it over

an entity.

Neenee73: The author managed to weave instant tension and mystery from the get go. It was a balancing act that kept me guessing and made everyone look like they could be a villain which is on par with the great writers of mystery like Agatha and Doyle. I was jumping at every creak. If you like tension in ever...
