Prologue
She would be lying if she said she was confident. The smooth whirring of the Cache should have been familiar by now, but then again Nix was never truly ready for anything. Each time that she stepped into the Cache felt like her first, tentative and uncertain.
The silent room and pulsing blue lights held a sort of tension that Nix could almost taste. She was quiet and alone for now. She walked across the smooth floor to the stand in the middle, slipping the Comm band on with practised ease. The cold feel of metal locking onto her wrist felt safe. She proceeded to secure her kit onto her back, eyes trained onto the empty wall ahead. In just minutes, the wall would slide open to reveal unfamiliar terrain.
Nix tried to focus on her training as the Cache’s biometric scanners activated. Months of training had prepared her for this. The faith Mikaela and Dax had in her. The knowledge that Coline was watching. The need to save her father.
The scan was complete. The wall slid open with a neat click, and Nix stepped into the hazy light. No room for hesitation. She was ready for her first solo mission.
