Chapter 1
I’ve always known my life is unordinary, it was everything and nothing. Life in a square room, a bed sat sunken in the corner, bars on the windows and a heavy lock on the door. Tall white ceilings and a cafeteria tray full of cold food. Always followed by the reeking smell of sanitiser and the thought of a better life. I was a girl with no home, no friends, no family and no name. Just stuck in between living and surviving.
Piercing Alarming sounds drew through my weak, thin pale body. Another attempt at changing the world as they called it. ‘Clack’ the big lock on the door opened and a white suited man with the name badge reading ‘Carl’ stood over me.
“Come on, don’t be difficult” his voice was familiar, and still as threatening as it was the past hundred times I’ve done this. I raised silently nodding as he cuffed me and ordered me to walk. None of this was new, I had constantly and continuously obeyed always to scared to find out what would happen if I broke a rule or rebelled. They never gave away to much information, all I new was that I an original orphan have spent the past Fifteen years of my life in a doled up lab, no freedom and only a prison cell to call home.
I enter the same room as usual the walls are white and the benches are filled with lab equipment. The iridescent lights flicker from time to time and the lingering smell of chemical and antibacterial cleaner always irritates my nose. There are sixteen chairs all secured with straps and in moments those chairs will be filled with the same faces I see every time. Just like me they have no freedom and we become the puppets as the workers control us putting on a show for there leaders. Knowing that someday this experiment to change the world could work and that every time I go into this lab they run tests, asking me to swallow a pill, have an injection or even stiches in my arm. This was that one nightmare you wished you could stop having, that one dream where it feels real and your senses become real.
I nervously back into a seat, my arms are yanked from behind me and fastened into a swelling pair of restraints attached to the chair always leaving dark purple circles behind on my wrists. These fellow prisoners that I saw always looked scared and rebellious but never spoke up as did I. They new that whatever they where using us for wasn’t ok and that these people had power. I stiffen as a worker picks up a threatening needle with bright blue liquid squirming in the tube.
“Ahh who’s my first life changer today,” his words sent a million tiny needle bites down my spine. He silently walked up to a blond emerald green eyed girl “you”.
Her lips paled as she forced them together and her hands turned into discoloured fists.
The worker ploughed the needle right into her arm as she let out a horrific shriek. Her body violently shivered and her eyes look as if they had been coloured in with a black marker.
“Get the boss!” Carls words made me quiver. I let out a scream sending Carls eyes to meet mine, “what’s wrong with her, what have you done!?”
“shut up girl” He snapped stiffing as the big brass doors open leaving a lingering smell of dust.
“her, her eyes” I begin to think about my life like a reflection, looking in a mirror only seeing an outline of a teenage body with no depth or personality just an empty outline. All these people haven’t lived, I haven’t lived. This is not how I’m going to go.
A tall detailed suited man with grey tinted hair and a name badge reading ‘Dr Conley’. He took very large steps with his shoes hitting the hard floor making me jump each time. He walked over to the girl. She was still, her eyes solid black. She stared and looked right through the walls of this place. Whatever they had done to her she was no longer just a girl, but a weapon. Dr Carl whispered something in her ear soon after we all found out what that was, she had broken free of the restraints punched a guy and now it batting down a door. Boom it opened but then she froze like she had obeyed all orders and stoped. Her eyes regained colour and bruises formed all over her body as collapsed to the floor.
“Ok, do the rest of them” as Dr carl spoke those words my arms stiffen fire filled my lungs and I couldn’t resist anymore.
“What are you doing to us, our lives gone, I don’t think so” I pick up the needle they had left on my side table using it to saw away my restraints. Lashing out I feel a pair of hands. I kick and I stab everything in my way till I look around and see a floor full of body’s and several happy faces. I go to untie all of us prisoners.
“oh no the girl, the Drs got her” I heard this tiny voice looking down I look at her face with swelling tears form in her eyes. Great my freedom now turned into a rescue mission.
We start wondering down the hall, my feet barely caring me and a million noises are behind me. “Shut up!” I urge, then silence. Making a sharp turn I find large doors, I open them captivated by what I see. Large shelves surrounded with dust and veils of glowing liquid stand tall before me. Scanning my eyes, I begin picking up the veils and reading them. Maybe one of them was a cure maybe one of them where a death sentence but when freedom is within reach I wasn’t going to think twice. Peering over my shoulder I notice a bag being held towards me. “Thanks” I say. Putting the veils into the bag, I hear a large snapping noise from the far. Slowly I walk towards the door.
A gun held to my head in the hand of the girl I’m supposed to be saving. A pale face with black eyes and my heart throbbing at a past pace. “Don’t do this!” my quivering words make a tear role down her face. She can hear me but every bone and muscle in her body keep her on demand, obeying and staying.
“No, No!” Her voice threatening and filled with desire, she doesn’t want this. My limbs almost tear out of the socket as lunge for the gun turning around. Its in my hand. Aiming the trigger straight at Dr Conley is my next move. Following him down the stair way.
“Stop, release her from your sick mind games”
“What’s so sick about wanting change, about having a little spy who can kill and then forget”
“Free her!” my words cut like knives sending a sharp course pain through both of our bodies. Glancing back at the group all eyes are on us. “Do it,” my teeth gritted. I urged toward him. Holding the gun close to his head. “Don’t make me shoot”.
My movements pause and a sneering sound of something bubbling. A sickening smouldering smell filled the air. I peer at the strap of my bag following it down, down. Slowly I open it picking up one of the veils. Its bubbling pink sizzle, growing warm.
“We have to leave before that explodes!” Dr Conley yelled.
“Leave,” looking back at the group behind me as they all make there way through the last heavy door. Dr Conley begins to walk; I hold the gun closer “Not you, you have to release her from your mind games” I feel the glass veil burn my hand. With a reflex I through it in the air. The lid opens and a flash before me. I look over to see Dr Conley on his knees.
“Release,” his words made me feel free. But all of that feeling was gone and echoed by a ricocheted and a flame of light. I begin running heading towards the last set of heavy doors. Heat and the courage of death following me. I jump into the air lunging out of the door. Rolling down the hill, smoke and violent fire roars over me… Looking back once the smoke had cleared, there’s nothing other than a pile of broken concrete. Fifteen years of prison and now I’m free. Looking at the group from a far I spot the blond green eyed girl. Her smile sends me the biggest gratitude I could ever imagine. I the girl who, had no family, friends and even no name. I am free.
