Chapter 1

That sound. That irritating sound. She continues to spin that squeaky chair with her foot, despite me death staring her and making it obvious it’s pissing me off.

“Will you please stop, Sylvia. I’ve told you multiple times that distracts me and I’m already stressed as it is.” I voice, unable to control my frustration any longer.

“Pfft. Really, Diya? Stressed? More like scared. You’re just worried about going to that creepy ass basement to retrieve whatever it is you need. Why don’t you just quit already? I swear to God there’s some freaky stuff going on in this place and you just continue to ignore it.”

Groaning in disbelief, I open my mouth for a comeback but get cut off.

“I kind of agree with Sylvia on this one. All the people who come to this hotel give me weird vibes and I always hear strange noises coming from the basement.”

“Not you too, Tori. And why would you even say that right before I go down there?”

“Sorry to interrupt here but I gotta go. See you guys later! Love you.” The annoying one gets off her even more annoying chair and heads for the exit, about to get sucked into the dark abyss that lies beyond the hotel doors. Tori steals her seat and waves goodbye.

“Hate you too! Anyway, as much as you love my company, I’m going to have to leave for a couple minutes to get those spare towels. Care to join me?” the desperation is evident in my tone, but she shakes her head again.

“Great.”

Disappointed in my girlfriend, I grab my phone and turn on my heel, prepared for a quick trip to the spine-chilling basement. I make my way to the elevator and once I’m in, I nervously smash the button for the creepiest area in this entire building. I aggressively wipe my clammy hands on my pants but even more sweat forms back and they shake uncontrollably. I remind myself to take deep breaths and by the time I’ve completely calmed down, the doors open, revealing just the place I want to be.

Before stepping out into the pitch-black area, my hands travel along the wall to find a switch.

Got it.

Only a couple lights turn on and results in me groaning for the severalth time tonight. My steps are quiet, not wanting to be heard by anyone who may loom around this space. Before my unsettling thoughts grow like a virus in my mind, I spot the fluffy, white towels piled on top of a couple boxes and go to pick them up. I graze my hand lightly against the soft fabric but pause when I hear footsteps coming from near a corridor which isn’t too far from me.

Peaking over the boxes and unable to view anyone from where I am and too scared to investigate, I pull out my phone. My fingers tap quickly on the keys and I text Tori to check the security cameras from where she is. I sneak another peak in anticipation for a reply and get one saying it looks like a person but there’s something unusual about them. They have long arms with strange needle-like points at the ends and a crimson coloured liquid dripping from their arms. They’re lanky and have long, slick black hair that is indescribably messy that it looks like a bird’s nest. A wave of fear washes over me as I read the text and push my back against the tower of boxes, slowly sliding down until I’ve left the towels laying on the ground and I’m curled up in a ball.

The strange description Tori gave me makes me think that whatever this thing is isn’t human and most likely is not friendly. I’m unable to gather the courage to run back to the elevator like a normal person and instead begin to rock myself back and forth, knowing something like this may happen. I never really expected someone to be down here with me, but the thought always lingered at the back of my mind, eating at me and making me incredibly paranoid at all times. I bury my head in my knees as a new sound enters the room. Clicking. The clicking grows closer and closer as I become more paralysed than before. The clicking gets louder until...it stops. The sound of my heart pounding fills my ears and it’s so loud, I wouldn’t be surprised if that thing could hear it. Slowly, my head turns to face my next destination which is the elevator but what I’m met with is far from that.
