The Color of Gray

I was falling. Falling through the black and dark eerie hole, I tap away at my phone screen.

Tap. Tappy, tap tap.

The blue light reflects off my porcelain face. I yawn as I hear the sounds of singing and marching. A tingle goes up my spine, like I was electrocuted. I was here in Wonderland. Or so mortals called it. The real name of this crazy alternative universe, is Threipoum. And is the land for the crazy. In the mortal world, people believe that gravity is the one preventing them from flying. In reality, Threipoum is draining the life out of the world, and prevents them from flying. Oxygen, is a failure. A LIE. It’s the toxins Threipoumnians vent out as they walk around exposed to so un lively action. My skin was paling from the running boredom in the mortal world. My everyday poofy minty green and silky pink hair was draining pf colour like a vampire sucked out the colour. My one blue eye and one green eye were both dull, with the spark of mischief long gone. I heard the ear splitting sound of the police siren, as I stretched and plucked my computer out of my leather satchel. Of course I was mad when Gwen chucked it into the trash can at the cafe. I could still see it jutting out of the cold metal trash bin like sharp pieces of glass.

The fall slowed to a stop as I plopped down on soft pink grass. I could feel the colour returning to my face as I skipped along the pink soft and dense grass. Threipoum was a beautiful place indeed. The blue sun and the green sky, the pink soft grass, and the black wilting willow trees singing away like a orchestra.

“Liana! Watch out!” I chucked the glowing ball out of the air and smiled. My skin stretched as I got used to the feeling of smiling. I haven’t smiled in weeks. A pink and blue headed girl ran up to me with her green and yellow striped dress. her silky twin tails bouncing beside her.

“Hey what’s up Gilani?” I grinned at Glani. She was a few years younger than me at the Academy, and her Pobes ball was still small. My Pobes ball was currently in the form of my phone. I trickled some Pobe energy into the phone as it popped into a Zendith. I smiled as it rubbed against my cheek. Glani was calling to her friends that I was back, as they all crowded around me, asking about how the mortal world was... or as we call it, Thailam. I grinned and sat down on a rock, asking my fellow Zendith called Nilight to scoop up some tree branches for me. the moment my fingers snapped, the fire burst out, the pink and green flames curdling the yellow branches of a Sindith tree.

I had Nilight crawl around the children, as I recounted the horrors of Thailpoumnians.

I stretched and winced as I heard something pop. The new year has started in Luternia Academy, and I was bailing on the welcome party all my friends were going to. I could hear the shrieks and yelps as kids all through first years, to tenth years had fun in the huge grass field. I just sat at my bed stroking the soft silver and black fur of Nilight.

she purred softly, as I sighed and looked out the window.

I had changed into black leggings and a loose white shirt. Pink and mint coloured socks followed, as I fiddled with my long silky hair. I jolted up as I heard Nilight growl. and disappear in a poof of pink mist.

The door creaked open, as I flung my satchels over my shoulder, and went to see what made Nilight jump. My shoes clicked through the silent hall, as I reached the stairs. two stairways going down, leading to a two-way hallway room.

It was quite huge, compared to the compact sized houses the spoiled.... what do you call those people? The old men who sit around starting wars? Right...Predigens? Anyways, I crept around the shadows slinking through the huge marble room, until I heard a rustle. I jumped, and my hand started to glow. A huge thick green vine curled around the person, and I rushed to the vine as I heard the person grunt and try to pry themselves out of the iron grip my vine had on them.

I snapped as the vine crumbled into Nilight, as she slunk away and hissed baring her fangs at the figure. I squinted my eyes, and gave up. I clapped twice, and the lights sparked on. I sucked in my breath as I started to see the colour drain off my hair. It was a Thailpoumnian. A human. In a swipe and thud, I had the Thailpoumnian underneath my arm, a gleaming dagger at their neck. I saw their face clearly for the first time.

This Thailpoumnian had dull brown floppy hair with shimmering green eyes. He was wearing a tattered tunic with a stained shirt, with blue jeans underneath. It was a he, I could tell that. He had a look of horror on his porcelain skin. He bit his lip, and sat up. he stuck his hand out to me, and I pressed my lips into a thin line.

I took his hand, and he took a breath.

“I can explain this all. Just that... I prefer to not die today.”

I kept my different colored eyes leveled at the Thailpoumnian named Keen. He claimed that he would explain everything once we get to my dorm. I had a dagger pressed against his neck the whole time we trotted along the marble floor to my room. I kicked open the door, making my other Pobes pet jump and squeak. Keen jumped back, startling me to slice a thin cut on his cheek.

I pushed him onto the floor, using my legs to press him into a position to where I can break his knees. I pressed the cold metal to his neck and placed my face so close to his that I could feel his breathing hitch. His heart was pounding as I glared at him in this position.

“Speak Keen.” I hissed into his ear sending a shiver across his body. He gulped and started to speak.

“I followed you here. And I think you can help me.” He breathed. His eyes still warily eyeing the dagger. He opened his mouth but only a random babble came out. I pressed my forehead against his, and locked my eyes on his.

“Now Keen, what can I help you with?” I calmly asked.

“You see, I’ve been doing some research, and I found out that there used to be a contract between the Threipoumnians and Thailpoumnians.” He continued hesitantly.

“But the Thailpoumnians broke the contract by starting World War II. The contract consisted of simple rules like to accept our different styles and traditions.” He sucked in a breath.

“Another was to not shed blood in cold blooded ways. But the Thailpoumnians shed more cold blood than the Threipoumnians could handle.”

I nodded, forgetting that my forehead was against his, making them clunk into each other. But I scrunched up my eyebrows and wondered.

“So why are you here?” Keen sighed.

“ The Threipoumnians have kept peace with each other, but the Thailpoumnians are planning to start a new war. And this one could be big enough to destroy both dimensions.”

I bared my teeth.

“ No such thing! Our dimension is protected by the gods themselves!” I mumbled. Keen shook his head.

“A president from this small country that stayed out of All of the other wars were revealed to be conducting experiments to destroy dimensions, and their plan is still unknown, but the Thailpoumnians know that they will succeed and destroy everything.” I pressed my lips together. I was trying to piece everything together.

“Can you get off me now?!” Keen whined.

“No.” He gave me a hard look with his green eyes and raised an eyebrow.

“Oh really?! No?” He whispered. I stumbled back at this burst of sudden confidence. But, before I could say anything, he slipped a hand on the back of my head and slammed me into the floor

I pulled away and stuck my tongue out at him. He rolled his eyes and pouted.

“So why me?” I mumbled into the loud silence. He looked up all happy and beaming.

“Because I believe that you are the last descendant of King Ledgate?” Nilight pounced onto Keen face and swipe at his cheek, soon blood dripping down from his claws.

“Where did you learn that....” I hissed into his ear. Keen backed away, and in a flash, a slick black cat with a sharp barbed tail mewed and attacked Nilight. But as Keens Pobe pet caught my eyes, it bowed down at my feet. I scratched its head, grinning as I saw Keen squirming. He was frozen, because his Pobe pet was controlling everything. I turned to Keen, and nearly he seemed to have a trnslucent glow. His hair was turning silky blonde, and with highlights of purple. But his green eyes didn’t change a bit.

“This is what I’ve been trying to tell you….” he mumbled,

“I’m a Lutra. Y’know? Those people who have glowing balls that turn into anything they want.”

And on cue, the door opened.
