New Beginnings

Ava’s POV

My life is nowhere close to being normal and it never will be normal, and I'm not just saying that. It is the truth. I lived in England for all of my life until something happened when I was 15 and it forced me and my mom to pack up and move to America. You see, I have the blood of a wolf running through my veins.

"Mum, we both know how hard last year was on you, trying to home school me and work at night. As well as working all day on the weekends you may not like it but--"

"No sweetheart, you remember what happened in England. We can't risk it again."

"Yes, I remember, but you can't teach me and make a living at the same time. I know you want to protect me from a repeat of what happened in England, but it is either quit work to homeschool me or send me to school and you can work for a living."

"But Ava, what if you lose it?"

"But I can control it mum, I'll be fine."

"No, you could control it, but your powers or whatever you call it are changing."

"I know that, but I've been working on controlling it better since we moved here."

"You sure you can control it and aren't lying to me?"

"I wouldn't lie about that mum, trust me."

"Okay, I will work it out and get you ready for school at the end of the summer, but keep practicing control."

"Of course, school doesn't start for another month and a half so I have time." The rest of the summer went fast as I practiced controlling my powers as mum would say, or my wolf as I would call it. My mum was able to get me into Crossroads High School. It was a smaller school compared to most and had woods right by it, which reminded me of my school back in England, which would help my wolf self stay calm. I hope it would be a good school.

A week before the first day I was able to take a tour of the school and get my schedule so I wouldn't be lost on the first day. It was now the first day of school and my mum insisted on driving me, even though I recently got an American Driver's license. When she pulled into the parking lot she spoke,

"Are you sure about this Ava?"

"Yes mum I'm sure, I'll be fine. If I need you I will call or text or something. Now can you unlock the door so I can go? Don't want to be late on the first day."

"Okay, be careful sweetheart. Love you."

"Love you too Mum. Bye." I say climbing out of the car. It was windy so my hair was blowing in my face, making it look chaotic. My mum pulled away and I walked to the doors. Here we go I say under my breath before opening the door and walking inside the building.

There were people walking past and people stopping to talk to their friends they hadn't seen since last year. I suddenly felt out of place; like I didn't belong. All my senses felt overwhelmed by all the new smells and everything. I could feel my eyes wanting change to their wolf colour of red. I took a deep breath to calm myself down, then I hear someone speak to me.

"I love your fiery red hair. It is beautiful, even if it is a mess from the wind." I look to see a girl with straight jet black hair and green eyes looking at me.

"Thanks," I say. My hair is always more visible when it is a mess.

"You must be new, I'm Lexi Hunt. What's your name?"

"Ava Reid."

"Welcome to Crossroads Ava. What grade are you?"

"Year 11, but I believe here you would say junior year."

"Oh, you’re British I guess the accent should have given it away. Did you just move here?"

"The year before this one. My mom homeschooled me last year." I made sure to add the last part. “I should get to class now," I say nicely.

"Oh, what class do you have."

"English."

"Same, I'll walk with you." we walked in silence to the class I sat at the end of a row and Lexi sat next to me. The bell rang and class began. The teacher introduced me then went on with the usual first day things, handing out the syllabus, going over the course objectives, and classroom expectations. Lexi was whispering to me the whole time telling me things about the teacher or other students in the class that in her words are "random nobodies." I still hung out with her, that is until lunch when I really realized what kind of person she is.

She was admiring one of the guys from across the cafeteria when someone walked in front of her blocking her "view".

"Hey, would you move. Why are you even here? The loser section is that way." She pointed in some direction and the kid hurried away. Her other friends laughed at what had happened. I however was not pleased.

"That wasn't very nice Lexi."

"Well he was in my way and he should know not to get in my way."

"But it is the first day."

"Well, we typically don't get new students here so everyone should know to stay out of my way."

"That's a little harsh though."

"Well if you don't like it you don't have to hang out with me and people who are actually cool."

"Okay, then I will see you in class Lexi." I picked up my tray of food and walk away I noticed a blonde girl who was sitting all by herself so I walked up to her.

"Mind if I sit with you?" I asked she looked up at me hearing my voice.

"Oh um go ahead."

"Thanks." I say taking a seat.

"So you didn't want to stay with Lexi and her friends?" she asks.

"No, to be honest, she is kind of a jerk, and I have had enough of it already. I'll take it you don't like her."

"No, she is the reason that for the most part, I sit alone at lunch and don't really have any friends."

"Well, I think we will be good friends because I am pretty sure we already have a common enemy."I say looking over to where Lexi and her friends sat as my wolf could sense that she was glaring daggers at me.

"I'm Bella."

"Ava." We sat and talked the rest of lunch we ended up having our last two classes together where we sat by each other. It looked like this would turn out to be a great new beginning for me.
