The Yellow Vine
The Yellow Vine
James found himself on island with blue and pink fluorescent sand that rested below his feet. He wore nothing but a button down shirt with a tie and loose pants. His hair was messy and out of line; he looked flustered. Below him, sand sparkled with light as the sun glanced upon it and every fourth wave came swiftly on shore.
“Confused?”, a Lion asked as it appeared behind James.
“What’s there to be confused about?”, James asked.
Suddenly the Lion fell into small pixels of dust on the ground. It was very peaceful the way it happened. Once the pixeles settled on the floor he began to look around more.
“I see you’re a stressed man”, the Lion said appearing behind him.
“Where am I?”, James asked curiously.
“Where do you think you are? Annoying isn’t it? Questions you don’t want to know the answer to I’ll rebuke. You’re free, that’s all you need to know. Isn’t this what you wanted?”, the Lion replied.
“How do I leave?”, James asked.
“Whenever you like, you are in no means held hostage. You are an individual with wishes of being free, this island is just a blank canvas. You can paint it with dark shades and odd intricate shapes that have never been seen in your geometry book. Add a black flower with flames of scorching heat that shoot from the pedals. Perhaps you wish to have light shades with triumph and brightness adding one or two suns that fill your canvas with warmth. This world is yours”, the Lion said as he dispersed back into sand.
James wanted to leave, yet at the same time he wanted to see what wonders were on this island. A whole world for himself! So he then began walking across the sand keeping close to the water.
He began walking around and he came across an old fashioned light pole. It was dark black with a small light bulb that was flickering dim light. He stayed in that same spot and just stared at the light bulb and it never went out. Out of the base of the light, he found a vine wrapped around it. The vine was yellow with a pink stripe that raced across it. James then got on his knees and reached into the deep firm dirt to find the roots and pulled them out vigorously. After that he rested on his and took a few deep breaths. Shockingly the yellow vine grew back in the exact same spot.
Frustrated and angry he sat on the pink sand and looked out at the sparkling ocean. The waves rolled in beauty before his eyes. Suddenly, James saw two dolphins jumping and flipping around in the water happily. He decided to go swim with them; this was his canvas. He then submerged himself into the sparkling warm water only to find there were dozens more dolphins. He swam up to one and grabbed onto a fin carefully so as not to hurt it. Like a jet he bolted through the water. Instead of closing his eyes he opened them wide and was astonished at the magnificent sea life. Twelve starfish in all different colors caught his eye and they we’re all enormous, about twice his size. Holding his breath James let go of the dolphin and swam up to a red starfish. He put his hand on the center and he was truly flabbergasted at the enormous size. The texture of the starfish was a hard yet had a welcoming vibe to it. Releasing his hand from the starfish he then swam up to catch his breath and kicked to shore.
When he walked back, the yellow vine had grown an inch. The vine was lightly brushing off of the light now and James was agitated. The vine would soon devour the light and not allow it’s rays to hit the soft loose sand. He again clawed deep into the firm roots wishing for it to stop growing. Yet every time it grew back in the exact same spot.
He again walked towards the water but this time he stared at it intently. He didn’t stop walking however, heading deeper and deeper into the light blue water. He tumbled into the waves and took a deep dive. James fell into the water gracefully but never felt the need to go back up for air. Without motion he glided slowly towards the bottom and his lungs filled with the dazzling water. He lied there still next to the 13 starfish. It’s true love.
