Prologue

June 23rd, 2000

Rain slammed onto the windshield of the tiny Volkswagen as Joseph swerved around a lone deer in the middle of the road. Next to him, in the passenger seat, his wife let out a scream.

“Drive faster!” She cried in anguish. With a pounding heart, Joseph pushed a little harder on the gas peddle, knuckles white around the steering wheel. They lived a good twenty kilometers away from the nearest hospital, and Joseph was severely regretting that choice as his 9-month pregnant wife let loose another shriek.

There were only a few kilometers left between Joseph’s wife and her chance at life when the meteor struck. It landed a mile from the car, but the impact threw the vehicle off course. The couple would’ve been fine, had that been the end of it. But while the meteor entered the atmosphere, other, smaller chunks broke free. It just so happened that one of these pieces landed in the path of the Volkswagen as Joseph attempted to regain control of it.

Joseph and his wife were never seen or spoken to again. Joseph died on impact. His wife died minutes later of severe head trauma. They were found two hours later by local law enforcement investigating the meteor and were taken the last few kilometers to the hospital. The doctors said it was tragic what happened. Both parents dead.

They also said it was a miracle the baby survived.
