Chapter 1

The school hall was crowded with students of all grades. I sat at the last with a pink slip in my hand. I opened it and read the number it had: 763398. I could see excited expressions on everybody's face.

"There will be only one winner" Mrs. Arnold declared.

"The winner would get a free trip to Mexico and a check of a thousand dollars!" She shouted over the voices of a thousand kids.

"That winner is me! That winner is me!" I heard a boy sitting next to me whispering to himself with his eyes closed.

"Alright! I'll read the number aloud and the one with that number had to come up here on the stage" Mrs. Arnold said, holding a white paper in her hands.

She shifted her spectacles with her fingers and started reading the number. Everyone was staring at her with over excitement. I saw Danny. My best friend. He was jumping up and down in excitement.

"7...6..." She started out loud then paused for a moment. She sneezed like a monster. I heard giggles. Then she continued, "3....3......9".

What? I am winning. No way!. It's incredible. I checked my slip twice. Yes this is it!.

"And......the last number is..." she glanced at everybody in excitement.

"Please say eight, please" I thought.

"Eight" she shouted.

Everyone sighed at once.

"I got it!" I shouted and ran towards the stage.

"Look! Here comes our winner, Joe Mullins" Mrs. Arnold said and handed me a huge check and an envelope.

You are lucky Joe!, I told myself.

"Do you come to school for sleeping Joe?" Mrs. Arnold asked me.

What? I woke up. Was I dreaming?. Everybody blurted out laughing. Even Danny was laughing at me.

"Umm...sorry Mrs. Arnold, I wasn't feeling well so......."

"Do you have a fever or something?" She interrupted me.

I nodded. I know I'm lying but I don't want to get punished.

"He fell down from a tree" I heard Finn Brown whispering to his friends. They laughed.

"Finn, did I asked you about anything?" Mrs. Arnold asked him.

"Sorry" he pleaded to her.

Such a jerk. He always pick on me. The bell rang so loudly that it made me jump. Lunch time. Danny came to me and said, "what do you have in your lunch box?"

"Cheddar cheese sandwiches" I told him.

"I like cheddar cheese" he said.

We both sat together. Amanda also joined us. Amanda Rose is one of my best friends. Me, Danny and she are best buddies. She is tall and thin with blonde curly hairs and pale skin. Danny is kinda short and chubby and he has long brown hairs.

"So what do you have in your lunch box Amanda?" I asked her.

She opened her lunch box. Grilled vegetables.

"So how was your vacations Joe?" Danny asked.

I had only one word to describe my vacations......HORRORIBLE.
