Chapter 1
Matt
Avery
Rave
Max had moved into my house and well I didn’t want to deny him help, my sleep was restless. I woke up at two in the morning one night and decided I’d go to Matt and Connor’s place to get some sleep. I slid out of the bed I shared with Rave and left him a note. I took my phone with me so he could contact me.
I slipped out of the house and walked to their house. I texted Matt, he was up surprisingly. When I arrived, he let me in.
I sat down on his couch.
“Does Rave know you’re here?” he asked.
“I left him a note,” I replied rubbing my eyes.
“If Max worries you this much you should talk to him about it,” Matt continues.
“Where else is he supposed to go till he gets control of himself?” I inquire.
“Avery, if you keep going like this, without sleep, it will start to affect you, even vampires have limits,” he reasons.
Matt didn’t know what Rave had said after I ran into him.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
“No.”
What had Max done to him? Why had he taken him out to that farmland? Was it safe for us to be in the same house as him? Nothing had happened, yet.
“Please talk to Rave,” he requests.
“I will, now can I please try to sleep?” I answer.
“Sure, I’ll be upstairs if you need me, okay?” he replies.
“Yeah,” I reply.
He gets off the couch and walks to the stairs. I watch him go up and listen as his movements make the house creak until it goes silent.
I lay down on the couch and I fall asleep quite quickly.
I wake up three hours later to my phone ringing. I don’t bother looking at the number thinking it’s Rave. I answer.
“I’m trying to get some sleep, Rave, I’m fine,” I answer.
“Avery?” a voice asks. It’s not Rave.
“Who is this?” I ask sitting up more awake.
“Kiv,” the voice answers.
Kiv was a hunter. He used to be my friend before I was kicked out and I stayed in contact with him until two years ago. He had disappeared off the face of the Earth.
“Kiv? What the hell happened to you?” I question.
“That’s not important right now, I got some half-breed orphans here that need a place to stay,” he informs me.
“Half-breed?” I ask.
“They were born shapeshifters and were turned into vampires, Jessie Everette and Vinnie Naverette found them a few weeks ago living peacefully with their parents and uncle, a shifter killed them and has been using them to trap hunters. I have to get them out of harm’s way before I can take out the shifter,” he continues. “Can you take them?”
“My house is kind of full at the moment and not the safest place. We’re taking care of a vampire who isn’t the best with control,” I reply.
“Do you know where they can stay?” Kiv asks.
“I have an idea, hold on,” I answer.
I walk upstairs and go to the master bedroom where Matt and Connor are sleeping. I shake Matt awake.
“What?” he moans.
“Matt get up,” I reply.
He sighs and rolls out of bed without waking Connor.
He follows me out to the hall.
“What is it?” he asks.
“It’s Kiv, he’s got some vampire orphans who need a place to stay, my house is kind of crowded and unsafe,” I reply nervously.
“You’re wondering if they can stay here,” he answers. “How old are they? I don’t want little vampire children running around wreaking havoc on our block.”
“Kiv, how old are the orphans?” I ask.
“Hey, Matt. It’s nice to hear from you after four years,” he calls. “Two are teenagers, I don’t imagine you’ll have much trouble with them, but the third is a baby. I highly doubt he’ll go running around, even then there’s four of you to keep him in check anyway, right?”
“They can stay here for now, who killed their guardians?” Matt replies.
“A shifter,” Kiv answers.
“We’ll be there by tomorrow evening, okay?” I reply.
“Sure, see you,” Kiv finishes hanging up.
“You should call Rave, tell him where we’re going,” Matt replies walking back into the bedroom to wake Connor.
