"I'm so sorry, but ma'am. Your daughter is in critical condition. But the baby is okay."
"Sir, please! Isn't there anything?"
The doctor paused. He looked back. "We need a kidney. We need a donor in less than 72 hours." Mrs. Lay started sobbing. "Oh, but me and my husband can't!" The doctor bit his lip. "I may have found a donor."
"Who is it?" Mrs. Lay asked, gently wiping her tears. "Your mother. Her kidney will work."
"Oh, but my mother is dead!"
"Yes, but her soul isn't, right?"
Mrs. Lay gulped. Then she stood up more. "Yes, I shall."
She walked up to her daughter. "Kristin?"
"Mmm?"
"I'm gonna have you rest, 'kay?"
"Yes, mom."
