Chapter 1
Ali’s Point of View
I slam the door and drops myself on my queen size bed. I muffle a scream into my pillow. I cannot believe mom! What century are we living in? I and only 17 for crying out loud! As I quietly cry to myself, I remember what just happened downstairs.
I had just come home from school. It was the last day of my junior year, and I was excited to begin summer vacation with my two best friends Mia and Nadia.
As I enter the kitchen, the fresh aroma of mom’s beef curry filled my nostrils. I put my backpack on the kitchen counter and went to the stove to have a taste.
“Mmmm...” I said, savoring in the taste.
Mom enters into the kitchen. “Wow, you look nice,” I complimented. “Does someone have a date tonight?” I wink at her as I gently nudge her arm with my elbow. Mom was wearing a cute dress, her makeup was done and her hair was loose, with curls at the end that came down to her back. Usually, her hair was always in a bun.
My dad past away when I was only 3, so mom and I were all each other’s got. We were each other’s best friend and mom always made me feel like I could always come to her for anything. Mom had never remarried. My only hope is that she find her happiness again someday.
“No date for me!” She said cheerfully. “But,do you remember my college best friend, Jenna?”
“Yeah, what of her?” I replied.
“So, when we were in college, we’d always fantasize about having kids around the same time so that our kids would be the same age. If we both had girls, our girls will be best friends, and if we had boys, the same as well....” Mom trailed off. “However, if one of us were to have a girl and the other a boy, they’d get married.” Mom blushes as she saying all this to me.
“Well, I hope Aunt Jenna had a girl then.” I said.
“Not exactly!” Mom replied. Jenna had a boy, he”s the same age as you and...”
“NOPE!” I said, as I grabbed my backpack and run upstairs to my room.
There was a knock at my bedroom door.
“Come in,” I said.
Mom comes in and sits at the end of the bed.
“Ali,” her voice was soft. “What’s wrong?”
“Why are you trying to set me up with a total stranger? I have no trouble finding myself a boyfriend, you know.”
“I know, but after Ethan cheated on you last summer, you’ve been pretty bummed. I just thought this will be something of a nice change for you. You’re always complaining of being the 5th wheel with Mia and Nadia.”
“Doesn’t matter, why are you so old school? Who still sets up their kids like this?” Mom laughs.
“Get up and dry your tears. Make yourself pretty.”
“Why?” I’m getting suspicious.
“Aunt Jenna and her son are coming over to dinner.”
I get up quickly. “Are you serious, mom?” I’m so annoyed at her. I walk out of the room.
“Where are you going?” I can here mom call from behind me.
“Grandpa’s! Don’t wait up for me, I won’t be home for dinner!”
