I've been weird my whole life.
Most of the time I am able to avoid being the center of attention, and that is wonderful because being weird is not a good thing in the opinion of many. Unfortunately, there are always a few slip ups. Like this instance:
We were in science class on May 21st, and we were prepping for a very important dissection. This particular dissection would prepare any future medical students for the blood and gore of future operations. I personally do not wish to go into the medical field for many reasons, the main being the following:
I, Amethyst Rosalina Barley, hate blood. There are actually many things in this world that I despise with a passion: Show offs, fashion trends, social media fads, but blood is one of the things I dislike most.
So as I sat there, watching the prim and proper queen of popularity, Miss Ivory Frinke, pin a victim of busy streets onto a pad, I felt my head begin to spin.
I tried to focus on the smells around me. I have always had a bit of synesthesia The chemicals in the air smelled blue. To be specific, it was a greyer version of a light periwinkle.
I looked at Ivory. She's a redhead. Her hair is curlier than any hair I have ever seen. She is extremely pale, and her bright green eyes pop in contrast to the shade of her, well.. everything. She's the friendly kind of popular, always helping others. The only problem I have with her is that she flaunts what she has in everyone's faces. She is one of those teenagers who believes she can get anything she wants by walking in front of people and talking about her new shiny car or the massive amount of Instagram followers she has.
I'm the kind of person who stays out of everyone's way. The random brunette with glasses that talks to no one. I read instead of make kissy faces at a mirror for my Snapchat fans, and I binge watch movies by myself instead of with people who may turn against me and use every word I say in an argument of absoloutly no importance. Ivory and I are opposites I suppose. She's my dramatic foil.
She smirks at me.
"Done," she says, stepping aside so I can see her handiwork.
I peer over at the lifeless squirrel, blood oozing from it's limbs, it's arms facing odd directions. I wince at the sight and Ivory gives me a pity look.
"Sorry huuuuny," she pouts.
I know she's only trying to be nice, but something about her just annoys me a bit.
She hands me a pick and we search for vital organs. As soon as we find the heart, I smell the brightest shade of yellow I have ever smelled. The yellow is soft, and I am instantly reminded of the letter "T". That can only mean one thing. Mr. Holland is standing over us, watching us slice open a rodent. His judgemental looks aren't even what bothers me, it's the spray he's dispersing onto our table. I read the label: blueberry.
"Clean that up," he spits. I look back down at the table. It is covered in blood. Blood and bones. Large, human sized, vivid bones. I shudder. I feel the floor falling, and I immediately know what's happening. I grab onto a chair and avoid the eyes of my peers. I sit and close my eyes. I open them again and retake my place beside Ivory, who says nothing. The blood is gone, and so are the bones. As I predicted, they never existed at all. A few stray drops of dluids have landed on the table. That's what Mr. Holland wanted us to clean.
It isn't the first time this has happened. One day, I saw a foot land on my desk during a Spanish quiz. I almost said something, but I didn't. It felt like the world shook as soon as it made contact with my desk, but I just closed my eyes. When I opened them again, the foot was gone and the world was still again.
By this point, Ivory was doing most of the work. Picking, blood, stabbing, blood, labeling, blood. I looked around the room. It felt like time was moving slowly. I made eye contact with a kid across the room. His eyes were lighter than snow and his hair was darker than night. I close my eyes. He couldn't be real. I opened my eyes and he was right in front of me. I couldn't see past him. I started to laugh as his hypnotic eyes stared into mine. He looked at me with hostility and nothing more, yet I couldn't help but giggle. Giggle and drool. The drool was everywhere and I felt tears well in my eyes. What was happening to me?
"Go!" I screamed. "LEAVE!" My laughter intensified and I wanted to do nothing but crawlonto a hole away from humanity. He stared at me for what seemed like an eternity. I heard Ivory. I heard Mr. Holland. I heard Alli and Ash and Jake and Beaux all at once. Screams. Screams. Yelling. Telling me to stop, to wake up.
"STOP LAUGHING, YOU WILL GET ME FIRED YOU CRAZY FREAKING-"
"Amethyst, it's okay, it's okay. Just sit down."
"Amy! OMG THIS IS GOING ON SNAPTEXT."
The strange eyes continued to bore into mine as I whispered, "I will never give in." I didn't know what I was talking about at the time, and I didn't know what exactly was happening. But that's all the time I had to think.
After I spoke, I blacked out.
