Chapter 1
I’m in trouble. Big trouble. Not with my parents, not with my school, not with the law. But with the government, US army and probably the world. Of course I’ll be in that much trouble, especially since I just sent my worst rival back to 1970 Ohio.
I’m Venus, I’m not your typical normal high school kid. No, I’m something much more freaky and dangerous and now… I’m on the run.
People like me are a terrible danger to society, and I totally agree. I agreed with that from the first day I found out about my powers. I noticed them since I was born but I never knew what it meant till I turned seven.
Some people would think it’s cool, others think it’s dangerous. Let’s put the age shall we- If you are between 3 and 14, you’ll think it’s cool, 15 and above, you’ll think I’m a dangerous freak.
I was freaking out as I ran to the nurse’s office. Two minutes after I got in, I heard helicopters, CIA vehicles and army tanks. I can’t believe they w
ere already here.
The nurse stood by the window panicking, the school had ordered a lock down to keep me from leaving the school. I went on my knees and begged the nurse to help me.
Anxious for me to leave, she gave me her car keys and helped me out the window before slamming it shut. I took her car and sped home wondering how I was gonna break the news to my parents.
I screeched into the driveway. I stepped into the house, one look at my face and they were panicking. My mom packed up clothes and food while my dad gave me their credit cards and my passport along with my brother’s.
After warnings and hugs and tears, I was speeding down the street. While my brother was removing all trackers, the CIA arrived and I saw my parents being arrested.
I struggled through tears and got us to my Aunt Theresa’s house. Julian stayed in the car while I went up to the surprisingly quiet house. I bet my mom’s car they were watching the news.
I was so right. All seven of them were staring at the TV terrified, their different reactions to seeing me was fearful but the most annoying was when the oldest kid tried to trap me in the house.
If not for Julian kicking open the door in time, I would have ended up in the hands of the government. Just as one of them called 911, I was stepping on the breaks into the nearest highway.
After that reaction, I knew no relative close by was gonna take me in so I headed for Tushville where Grans lived. After a 55 minute drive of silence, we arrived at Grans’ peaceful neighborhood.
The town where grandma lives is one of the most peaceful and smallest towns in North Carolina. Even if it was confirmed that I was an alien, Grandma would never hand me over to the government.
After I parked the Hyundai in front of her fence, Julian and I got our things out of the car. Grandma rushed out and pulled us inside, bolting the door shut. We dumped our things on the dining table and sat on the chairs.
“Tell me what happened” Grans brought us hot cocoa. I had never told grandma about my weird abilities but I think she already knew.
I spilled everything out, from when Jess and I had a conflict to when I was driving Julian and I to Tushville. I ended saying ‘I’m cursed’ drawing a groan from Julian.
He rolled his eyes at me and like a typical 12 year old started ranting about how cool it’ll be to have superpowers. Even if Julian was 30, he’ll still think having superpowers is super cool.
Grans had been quiet and I could see signs of worry on her forehead. “Grans?” “Hon, I really want to keep you hidden but you know they’ll track the Hyundai and trace you here. You know I can’t bear the sight of you being arrested” She placed her hand on mine. “Or dissected”. She looked like she was about to cry at the thought.
I took her hand in both of mine and dropped my head. I was surprised when Grans got up with an idea bulb literally floating above her head.
She brought out an old book alongside an ancient day flip phone that I doubt still existed. “Shut down your cell phones, use this and call this number. You’ll go to this address.” Why would Grans keep such old stuff very well hidden?
That’s when I saw the cover of the book and I knew why. It was like a guide for super humans and mutants. “Leave now, they’re coming. Go dear, I love you both.” She wrapped Julian and I in a big hug.
She gave us her car keys and took the keys to the Hyundai. Grans drives a Chevrolet Camaro, we stuffed our things into the back seat.
As I was trying to get to the address, everything suddenly went blurred and I saw Grans telling the government agents to back off or she was gonna sue.
Tears came to Grans eyes when they said she’ll lose the case and go to jail for being an accomplice to a terrorist threat. My eyes got teary and I could see the road again.
I got to the address, unlike the other houses around, it looked like this house had been here for a hundred years without changing even a piece of brick. I knocked several times and no one answered.
A tiny rabbit popped out of nowhere. Julian getting frustrated came out of the car, he spotted the rabbit and followed it to an old but strong shed. The door opened and he stepped, me just a step behind.
The door slammed causing us to jump back then we saw light from the stairs below. I wanted to get back outside but Julian’s curiosity took him down the stairs and I had no choice but to follow.
We stood in front of a woman sitted in a chair, crossing her legs and staring at us like she’d been waiting for us for over a decade. “Your Grans decided to finally to hand you to me”
So many questions were running through my head, I couldn’t stand still. My knees felt weak, I held Julian’s shoulders for support. “Who are you?”
“A person who’s been waiting for your sister” I got a weird feeling in my guts and I raised my voice, “Who are you? Why have you been waiting for me? Are you gonna help us or anything? We’re in a terrible situation.”
She stood and moved close to us, I took a step back as she shifted Julian aside and stood so close to my face. “Yes I can, I can help you escape even teach you how to use your abilities”
“What do you mean ‘use my abilities’? I want to get rid of them” Julian scowled at me as he took a seat. She started explaining the things I could do and how useful I could be. She also mentioned something about her having super abilities too.
She seemed evil, the kind of person who takes advantage of people like me. What if she was a government agent? If she was Grans would never send me here and besides, she just told me she had super abilities too.
Her tone started changing and I got scared. “Come with me to Tennessee” That wasn’t going to happen. Fear mixed with distrust, I shook my head, rejected her offer, grabbed Julian and we were back on our way to Grans’ place.
“Why’d you do that? She was gonna help us” Julian yelled after long moments of silence. “Don’t raise your voice at me. We can’t just trust her” I retorted.
“Why? Do you suddenly have the power to know if people are ‘trustworthy’ or not?” He said making air quotes with his fingers.
I went quiet with hurt and I could see regret in his face. We arrived back at Grans’, her cozy house that was usually lighted inside looked deserted. The Hyundai was gone.
I ran to the porch and upon touching the railing, everything in sight was gone and instead I saw Aunt Theresa helping Grans, who was seriously shedding tears, get into the Hyundai.
When everything went back to normal, I saw a note peeking out from under the door. I picked it up and read
I trusted Grans and if she trusted this ‘Jane’ then I might as well trust her too.
