Time travel with a sense of reality
"I could not finish this book as it is not finished yet, but what I've read so far is definitely praiseworthy. Very well written, with a nice sense of humour, and a lot of details probably only a professional archaeologist can supply. The scepticism and the reasoning of the main character keeps the story grounded and real, and the use of a forgotten language takes it effortlessly to another level. Clothes and looks aren't the only problems when you zip 5000 years into the past. Just try to communicate. 😎 I hope that the story will be continued soon, so that I can resume reading. Loving the Beatles by the way. 😁"
Archaeology is Storytelling
"I don’t know why I didn’t read this gem of a novel earlier. But I am glad I finally did. Perhaps like the Avebury Cave and the Avebury Stones, this novel lay unnoticed right in front of my eyes, only to be discovered and devoured when the time was right. Just as it happened with this book’s protagonists, Samantha and James. Archaeologists both, they stumbled upon — or were transported by destiny — to the Neolithic period, 5600 years ago. Was it divine intervention or a scientific glitch that made this unintended time travel possible? Guess we will find out in future chapters. But there is no denying the fact that, just like them, I have ended up discovering a treasure. They discovered the Neolithic Albion of 3604 BC. And I discovered Archaeology as a Storytelling device. The practice of archaeology itself is considered a form of storytelling by many, involving the interpretation of material remains to create narratives about the past. But for an ignorant reader like me with no knowledge of the subject / profession, archaeology blended with time-travel created a mesmerizing atmosphere that pulled me in, hook, line and sinker. Midway through Chapter 2, I found myself compelled to look up “Avebury Cave,” read the Wikipedia page on “Avebury Stones,” found out about the West Kennet Long Barrow, debated in my mind whether that barrow was indeed the “cave” mentioned in the novel, and exhausted myself. Never have I taken so long to read 10 chapters. Never have I felt compelled to take notes and conduct mini-research while reading just 10 chapters. That is the hidden power of this book. It compels you to read, research, analyze, question, and ultimately marvel at the sheer volume of details from Neolithic England that the author has poured into every page. Which makes me wonder, would this book have had the same impact if it were not written by an archaeologist? I take solace in the fact that I decided to skip researching the ancient Albionese dialect present throughout the first 10 chapters. It would have taken me even longer to finish reading the story had I done so. I also take pride in the fact that, in this age of cliffhanger endings, plot twists on every alternate page, and overreliance on bingeworthy tropes / stereotypes, we have a fellow author who relies on good old research and storytelling skills to transport readers to another world. That would be a time trip worth looking forward to. ● Overall Rating: 5 stars ● Plot: 5 stars ● Writing Style: 5 stars ● Grammar and Punctuation: 5 stars"

"[ It is only a review of the chapter 11. ] Gwen’s point hit me as oddly profound: time travel, if it ever stopped being science fiction, would immediately become a language problem. A trip into the past wouldn’t be just a change of scenery — it would be like landing in a country where your brain has no interface, except the “foreign language” is your own tongue in an older, stranger form. Vocabulary warped, grammar shifted, pronunciation alien — and worst of all, the invisible layer: what counts as polite, credible, insulting, or dangerous. You could arrive with perfect coordinates and flawless machinery, yet still be socially mute, locked out of meaning not by physics, but by the past’s operating system."

"The Archaeologist is a time travel romance — minus the cringe and nonsensical elements that can sometimes come from this genre. The mystery of James, the archaeologist who mysteriously disappeared, is set up beautifully in the opening chapters, and the payoff is incredible. I never really knew how to handle adult, realistic protagonists, but I can sure take note from Gwen in this one. Archaeologist Samantha Harrison — the protagonist — is a mid 30s woman who remains relatable on so many levels. A mysterious incident occurs in which she’s sent to Neolithic times while exploring an excavation site. There — to my surprise — she indeed meets the supposedly disappeared James, who turns out has gone through a similar situation. I haven’t quite seen a lot of their dynamic, though, which I’d like to see more of in the coming chapters. Samantha’s reaction to James’s explanation — in which he informs her that she’s been sent through time — is far from superficial; her denial and exasperation were on point. Let’s not forget the beautiful writing style that brings this book to life with every passing chapter. Gwen’s attention to detail is something I really appreciate (shoutout to her for researching on the ancient Celtic language to make the setting realistic). Overall, great book from a great author! "

"Archaeology combined with ADVENTURE, TIME TRAVELING, TRICKY MYSTERY is essentially the food for my soul because it resonates with me so much! I find this development very intriguing especially because of the secrets the Professor may be hiding about the missing student and also hilarious that Samantha perceives it as a huge prank when she spontaneously travels back in time to meet him!! I love the motifs of time travel and how you describe history so passionately with your chapters where the characters interact with each other at the excavation sites and uncover 'special rocks'. I am so curious about Samantha and James' love story which seems like another mystery!! Incredible book so far, and I am awestruck because this is part of a TRILOGY?! This is so exciting! 🤩💚"

"I am in love with this book! I don't often see my own name in books or media as a main character, but reading about Samantha's story makes it even more cool to me in my opinion. The plot is well paced and the author brings each character's emotions to life! I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good mystery or adventure. I hope to read more about Samantha and James's relationship and how they will get back to the future😍"

Intriguing trip through history
"What a wonderful story! Written by an actual archaeologist so that the depictions of the dig site have the real feel of authenticity, this is also a magical and mystical time traveling love story. I found the unusual use of present tense/third person to provide an interesting flavor to the writing. Trying to unravel the mystery and the paradoxes of time travel along with the main characters kept me on my toes. I particularly enjoyed the detailed descriptions of life in the past. On top of everything else the love story is sweet and profound. A truly great read!"

It was so interesting to see history intertwined with the story and how people will always be people no matter what time period you're in haha. So of course, the characters were probably my favorite part. They felt very real and genuine. I loved following their story and feeling their emotions with them. "A well written book with well described characters. The strong female lead character gets suddenly transported to the past during a storm. How she handles herself and her adventures are what the book is about. The author has done a good job with descriptions and workings of an archeological dig. She also handled the time travel portal very well without the need of a DeLorean travelling at 88mph (they are hard to come by). The description of an earlier Neolithic time are well done give there is no written history to refer to. She meets James and together they have to work out how to get back to current time. Meanwhile they enjoy some adventures along the way Definately recommend the story to anyone wanting a great story told very well."

Even as a person who understands nothing of archeology, you have a sense of things based on descriptions. It paints a more real mental image.
