Not One

We are not one

Such as we see in parks and peaceful places.

Those who began as two and

—Through long years of searching

And longer still as soulmates—

Have become one.

Now grey-haired and golden aged,

They walk hand in hand

Among memories of a lifetime shared.

Their bond is time.

We are not that one.

We are not one

Conceived as one but born as two by divide;

Who appear as one but see as two

Through different eyes.

Twins, entwined by like minds

Hidden behind mirrored smiles.

Separate souls so similar of shape

As to seem a single form.

Two, connected by a common code

Of blood and bone.

We are not that one.

We are one

Who began as one,

Grew as one,

And through the cycle of centuries

Found form and function lacking in flexibility.

Then did the one extend itself,

Expanding beyond its boundaries

To become

More than the sum.

One became we.

We are this one.

This infinite loop feeding back and forth;

Ever higher does it climb,

Ever brighter does it shine,

The endless echo of it's laughter

Singing throughout time.

For this one

All Imaginings are made possible,

All dreams become real,

All things living are bound

By love eternal.

We were this one.

And then you were gone.

With your loss, the loop

—Now made finite—

Falls from blinding heights.

The light fades to stars

Twinkling in the night before winking

Into nothing.

The sound of singing

Turns to screaming;

Idle whispers on the wind,

Broken and breathless.

All that is left is none.

No one; no we,

Only I now,

Only me.

I am the empty shell

In which your ocean's waters once sang.

I am the wilted bloom

That furled and unfurled

To the beat of your heart.

I am the husk

Turned to dust in the darkness,

Forever floating

In the vastness of your void.

We are not one

For you are gone, and I...

I am not.
