Chapter 1 - Enmity

Kachinga was deep in thought as he gazed at the woman, he called his fiancée. He never imagined marrying such a beautiful woman. Kachinga was a simple guy; after all, women weren’t even obsessed with him. He knew she was the kind of lady many men dreamt about. Sharon was intelligent, with a shapely figure, caramel skin, and a smile that complemented her striking features. Not to mention, she was wealthy, unlike Kachinga, the simple guy whose business could only afford him food and shelter.

Sharon: “What, do I have something on my face?”

Kachinga snapped out of his daydream and reacted like a man caught staring at a woman’s assets.

Kachinga: “I’m just happy to see you.”

Sharon: “Are you having naughty thoughts about me? You know we made a promise to wait until after the wedding, right?”

Kachinga: “I was not having... wait, why am I even trying to defend myself? Yes, I’m having thoughts of doing this.”

He stood up from the other end of the couch, a short coffee table separating them. He approached her, looking at her like a hungry wild animal.

She met his gaze, held her breath, and bit her lip in anticipation. They were alone in her spacious flat, and the atmosphere in the living room changed.

He was purely acting on his predatory instincts. After a minute of intense eye contact, he made his move.

He tickled her on the white three-seater couch.

Sharon: “Stop, haha, stop!”

She squirmed and giggled, and they tumbled from the couch as Kachinga playfully dragged her to the floor.

Now, they were face to face, looking into each other’s eyes as if seeking answers.

Kachinga: “Ouch.”

Sharon: “Oh my God! Are you okay?”

Kachinga: “Yes, I quite like this position. It was in my naughty thoughts.”

He grinned like a man up to no good. Sharon chuckled and quickly stood.

Sharon: “You are crazy,” Sharon giggled. “We promised to wait aft-”

Kachinga: “After the wedding, I know, but I want you now. Why do we have to wait?”

Sharon: “I don’t want to jinx our wedding.”

Kachinga: “That’s superstitious, there’s no way that could happen.”

Sharon: “Remember my friend Natasha. Bad things happened that led to her splitting up with her fiancé.”

Kachinga: “With all due respect to Natasha, she was a player.”

Kachinga: “She played two grown-up men into thinking they loved her.”

Sharon: “She sto-”

They were interrupted by a phone call.

Sharon: “Hello, I’ll let you in.”

Sharon ended the call and blushed, turning away to hide her reaction.

Kachinga: “Who call-”

Sharon: “That’s Derek. Can you let him in? He’s waiting at the gate.”

Kachinga: “Okay, but I-”

Sharon: “Thanks, sweetie.”

She quickly grabbed her handbag and rushed upstairs. Kachinga heard her turn on the shower as he reached the front door. Beside the door, a small screen displayed four buttons. One button activated the security cameras at the gate, while others controlled the gate into the complex.

He pressed a button, bringing the gate camera feed to life. A black Range Rover with tinted windows was parked at the gate. This must be Derek, the wealthy fellow Sharon couldn’t stop talking about. At that moment, Kachinga decided he didn’t like Derek. He pressed the button to open the complex gate.

About ten minutes later, a soft knock echoed through the door. Kachinga took a deep breath and opened it.

A strong, sweet cologne greeted his nose. A man in a black suit with a red tie stood in the doorway. He was tall, dark, and handsome, with a calm aura that could quell a storm. He looked like a black version of James Bond, a gentleman with looks that could kill. Clean-shaven strong jaw, smartly combed African hair with shaved sides. Kachinga shook his head in surprise when Derek spoke.

Derek: “You must be Kachinga.”

His voice was deep, cool and commanding.

Kachinga: “I-I-I...” Kachinga struggled to say the right words.

The loud squealed voice interrupted his pattern of thought.

Sharon: “Derek!”

Derek: “Baby girl!”

Sharon squealed and rushed towards Derek. At that moment, Kachinga turned around, seeing Sharon rush towards him, unsure of what to do. He felt strong hands on his shoulder, pushing him to the side, causing him to crash to the floor and knock the air out of him.

Sharon gave Derek a big hug. He lifted her and spun her around.

From his vantage point on the floor, Kachinga watched them apart from their embrace, holding hands in what seemed like playful banter.

Something else caught Kachinga’s eye: the clothes she changed into pink, tight yoga pants and a fitted pink t-shirt. The yoga pants had the word ‘Daddy’ written on the ass. These clothes clung to her curves in ways he couldn’t have imagined. Why didn’t she dress like that when he was with her?

What bothered him most was that they didn’t see him or help him up from the floor. Maybe he was justified in disliking the man who pushed him down just to embrace his woman.

Anger welled up inside him. The wedding was approaching, and he knew he had to protect what was his.

His woman.

Derek had become his enemy.
