You thought after the Blood Wars, things would be peaceful in the living realm, right? Not so much. After Sachi and Rika had their first child, immortals found it acceptable to mate and breed with humans. Pretty soon, demimortals (That was the new name for them) made up one-third of the population in Japan.

Vampires, immortals, and humans hated these new half-breeds. So much that they wished death upon them. Although thought upon, the act of execution was never acted upon. That was until June 17th...

It was a clear night on June seventeenth. But soon everyone would smell the fowl scent of blood everywhere.

Off near a rice paddy, was a small bamboo house. It was near ruin and housed five children and a nanny. The children were human and the nanny was a demimortal. The nanny was a kind lady at first. But then a gang of vampires killed her parents one night while they were sleeping in their futons. Devastated, the nanny's personality changed. She cruel and abusive. The children couldn't take it!

So they plotted to get rid of the nanny. After the nanny beat on the youngest child, the two older boys went to their daimyo for help. They told him everything. The daimyo was appalled by their tells and took action.

In the morning, the nanny was arrested. They held trial hours later. The judge found her guilty against the children's and neighbors' testimony. The nanny's sentence was death. The method was by hanging. But the date would be January 12th. So the nanny stayed in jail.

One would find it interesting that the nanny was a demimortal. So was it a fair trial? No one can say. But one thing was for sure. It started a chain of persecutions.

Days later, two boys were wandering the streets. They became hungry. Most of the stores were closed due to dawn. The boys prowled the streets.

Alas, they found a fish market that was open early. The fish was fresh and no one was in sight. Opportunity was in perfect range. So the boys rushed to the store.

The boys had a field day stealing all of the fish. That was until....

"Hey!" a voice snapped. The boys jerked up and looked around. A huge man roused from the back. He looked all steamed up.

"You!" the man yelled. The boys grew scared. They broke into a run. The pissed man chased after them. The boys came to a dead-end. They seemed done for.

"We're doomed!" one boy yelled. The store owner caught up to them and beat them senselessly. When he was done, the young thieves looked like they had been trampled on. But vengeance was crawling near.

That afternoon, the boys went to the police. They lied about the whole fish situation. Why do so? Because the fish store owner was a demimortal. That's right, I said it. The store owner was a demimortal. And within the next day, the store owner was arrested and tried. He was found guilty on shallow charges and sentenced to death by hanging. The store owner was jailed as well.

Soon, more trials followed. At first they seemed fair. Most of the crimes were felonies. So no questions followed. But then, it grew ridiculous. More and more people began to lie. Innocent demimortals were sent to the slaughter. And all because of hate.

Then, January 12th came. It was a cold and harsh day. The snow was pure. But it would soon be red with blood.

A strong oak tree would be used for the hangings. The whole village was there to witness. The prisoners stood in a small bunch together. They were lost in despair. These people were friends and neighbors. Why were they doing this?

The drum sounded roughly. The dark hour had begun. All was silent. the prisoners were walked to the tree. Hearts raced fast. The prisoners walked up the platform. The nooses lightly swayed in the sharp cold breeze. The crowd kept watching. The prisoners were hanged without a tear in any eye.

This grew to be the norm. The bodies were just thrown into a pit. No one felt sympathy for these innocent scapegoats. But then, the emancipation came.

In early spring, a young immortal lord was wandering around the countryside. He was bored with the high life and needed a change. Then, he saw a lovely woman. She had lovely raven locks to her nape and fair skin. Her kimono was of fine silk. The woman was a lovely human.

From the start, the immortal lord coveted her. He just had to have her. So the guy made his way to the maiden secretly.

The woman herself was picking mums. Her mind was elsewhere when she felt a heavy breath on her hair. She grew frightened

"My, you're lovely," a voice hissed in her ear. The woman's fear sky-rocketed. She quickly shot around. The lady saw her pursuer. He was a handsome man. The man was grinning wickedly.

"What do you want?" the woman asked nervously.

"Nothing much love," the immortal lord replied. "Just you." Then he kissed her tenderly on the lips. In a panic, the woman pushed away. The lord stared at her.

"I can't!" the maiden said. "Why not?" the lord asked.

"I'm married!" the woman yelled. Then she ran away in panic. The lord watched his coveted prize run away. She was married? But to who? He decided to find out.

For the rest of the evening, the immortal lord followed his prize. So far, there was nothing. Then he saw the prize's husband. The husband was charming and his age. This angered the lord. Even more, the other man was a demimortal. This brought the lord, Kaoru, an idea. He decided to off the maiden's husband. And he knew just how to.

Morning came. The police came to the couple's home and arrested the husband. For what charge you ask? Thief and conspiracy against a lord. The husband, Kado, swore he was innocent. But the police took him anyway.

Kado's trial was corrupt. Kaoru presented false evidence before the court and they bought it. Kado's wife, Akiko, knew he was innocent. But she couldn't prove it. Kado was found guilty, sentenced to death, and jailed. Kaoru enjoyed the results. But this victory was short-lived. For Akiko caught on to the truth. Her sorrow became rage. She had to save her husband. But how?

Akiko gathered up all of the victims' families and started a campaign. They began to fight for the end of the persecutions. This fight took three years. At last, Kado was set free and Kaoru was killed by Hynes' Blood Dagger.

This liberation awoke the public. They had been harsh to the demimortals for the past nine years. The public had to make things right again. But how?

After two years of debate, a new law was passed. Demimortals now had the right to protect themselves. This law has been around ever since.
