The Snow Globe

Eventually my parents gave up even believing anything I would say to them. So the times that I was not lying to them, it started to become an issue and I would occasionally get quite aggravated. To be fair I was the cause of it, I must admit it was my fault. But, you know? Although, my grandparents believed me. Sometimes. Well at least they acted as though they did.

For Christmas one year, my nan and grandad gave me a snow globe. It had a pink stand with flowers around it. The transparent glass sphere surrounded a peach coloured castle, which had speckles of glitter circling around it. Of course, the glitter was pink. I found it so mesmerising, I didn’t care about the other presents. For some weird reason I was only captivated by that one small object. I remember running upstairs and into my bedroom. And what a surprise, it’s a pink room.

Anyways, I placed it on the wooden shelf that sat next to my bed. It was strange cause I felt an extreme urge to stare at it for hours. Something was off about this globe though, as I distinctively remember the globe having a castle in it, but, some unknown reason, it had been replaced by a village! Then things started moving, the mini figures started walking around as though they weren’t living in a glass dome.

So I snatched the globe into my hand. Sprinting down the stairs and into the lounge. That being where my mum was relaxing, watching a Christmas movie. I tried to tell and show her what was happening, but she said I was making it up and that I was “wasting her time”. I said the same thing to my dad and got the same results.

Although my Nan did say she’d have a look at it for me. I don’t think she was being serious. She couldn’t see anything. I was the only one that could see these miniature figures walking and running about, like a whole new world in this one tiny dome.

I tried to put it back on the shelf, but it slipped, smashing on the ground. Fragments of glass scattered across my bedroom floor and the water soaking my carpet. It brought a stream of tears in my eyes.

I’ll never really understand it. I bought daughters twin snow globes identical to the one when I was younger. I got them for their twelfth birthday. They would come to me occasionally saying that they were having the same experience as I did. Except when I went to look at their globes I couldn’t see it anymore.

I don’t know if it is real or whether it’s a figure of their imagination. No pun intended. Maybe it’s because the difference between a child and a adult is that a child’s creativity can allow them to believe in magical things. Though adults get hit with the reality of thing as they are getting older, loosing their create minds. That preventing them from seeing the magic in a simple snow globe...
