Sacrifice

“Please don’t do this. You don’t have to do this. Please!” Mary-Kate wailed, but the circle of teens didn’t listen. They kept chanting around her. Both of her hands and feet were bound. She was spread in the middle of a round table, her clothes almost made to shreds on her body. Tears stained her dirty face. Around her, a group of five other kids, not much older than her, were chanting words that made her skin crawl. She didn’t understand them, but the demonic pentagram that had been drawn on the basement floor was enough to hint Mary-Kate that whatever they were saying was not good. They all held an athame on their hands and as the chant started to die, they approached the table, their hands raised.

“PLEASE, DON’T DO THIS! PLEASE!!!” She screamed once again, but her pleads and tears only made the teens around her smile. They liked what they were doing. They rejoiced in hearing her screams and knowing she had no way to escape.

In a swift motion, all of their hands came down and plunged their athames in her flat stomach. They didn’t only do it once but kept stabbing her over and over again. Her blood splashing their crazed faces, her screams slowly dying out with no one to help her out.

3 months later...

“It went better than I thought,” Claire said to her two best friends as she lay on her bed. She flipped through Netflix. Denise was laying beside her while Irene had some cushions around her on the floor. She popped popcorn after popcorn inside her mouth not caring about the calories. Not that she needed to. That’s why they sacrificed Mary-Kate. She was the most innocent girl in the school. So innocent that she had no friends. She kept to herself which was even more convenient for them to snatch her after school with the help of their two hockey mates. They all had their purpose, their wish for killing her. Beauty, popularity, money, lust, and even absolution from petty crimes.

“Pass me the chips, would ya?” Denise says as she raises and holds her weight on one of her elbows. Extending her arm, she grabs the bag that Irene hands her.

“It did. Christopher has slept with ten girls from school already.” Irene voices. At that same moment, the lights flickered and the room went cold. Cold enough they could see their breath.

“What’s-” And a slashed was heard followed by a gurgling sound. Standing up, Irene glanced at the table and unleashed a shattering scream. Claire and Denise had their stomachs slashed opened, by what looked like to have been made by claws. Their throats had been ripped out and the gurgling sound was the blood that spat out of their exposed neck.

From behind Irene, she felt something breathing down her neck.

“It’s going good for me now too.” A too familiar voice said before the last scream bounced around blood-covered walls.

Neenee73: The author managed to weave instant tension and mystery from the get go. It was a balancing act that kept me guessing and made everyone look like they could be a villain which is on par with the great writers of mystery like Agatha and Doyle. I was jumping at every creak. If you like tension in ever...
