Prologue

I watched him at work, a demon filled with rage, controlled but merciless. He stopped at nothing as he left a trail of fire and blood. At the climax of his rampage where he had single handily eliminated two of the most notorious crews in the State, he dragged men up flights of stairs as I watched from down below, strapped in the car seat. He had this Herculean type of strength and a fury that could not be matched, as he threw man after man from a shattered window many storeys up, I watched him stare down at their death. He never got tired and his will for vengeance never dimmed in all the hours that passed, there was no mercy in him and I did not know him then, I did not even know his name.

We raced through the desert towards the border and I no longer cried and had not even once pleaded for mercy as he had none to give. I could not even look at him and he kept me strapped in the passenger seat as his eyes focused on the road ahead. The dust covered everything coming from the furious tyres of his machine, he had this supernatural quality, like a freak of nature, something terrible that had been awakened from a long sleep. I kept my eyes closed and dreaded sundown, what the night would bring and what would happen to me after we crossed the border. I knew I had lost everything, I was never going home again.
