The Other Side of Justice

What if justice

Was not used for good

What if it was a trap

And we were the rat

We think about justice

As setting wrongs rights

But it doesn’t always solve

Our complicated fights

Sometimes an innocent man

Is convicted for the crime

He spends his life in prison

One day at a time

But we never hear about him

Because we don’t even try

To look for the flaws in the system

That made his family cry

His son will grow up

Without a father in his life

He’ll will think he deserted him

And take it out on his wife

The cycle will continue

Because nobody wants to ask questions

Instead we’ll just keep giving

Our irrelevant suggestions

So how do we change the lives

Of these poor innocents

It’s time we set ourselves

Some much needed precedents

Because it’s still very true

That justice can be used for good

It just takes more work

Than we thought it would

The day his son left

Was the worst day of his life

He knew what he’d lost

And the poor man cried

The next year was undoubtedly

The most lonely one yet

Only his wife to comfort him

And even she was depressed

He blamed himself

And he knew he was right

Because whenever he said it

There was no one to deny it

He spent his worst days

Sulking alone in silence

And even his best days

Were not very different

When he was called

To become a juror

He knew he wouldn’t care

About the outcome anyways

But after spending hours

Arguing in that room

Something in him changed

Something felt good

He had made a difference

In a young man’s life

And for once it had been positive

No one thought he was a monster

That night he wrote a letter

To the son he’s lost

And with this newfound fire

His heart started to defrost

mariedavismd312: This was Avery spiritual read. The last 2 chapters where very disappointing. That was such a let down unless there is a sequel. Burgess should have been punished for what he did. There was no explanation for his hatred for Jeremiah. I figured he was being set but just had the wrong person. I loved ...
