It's Over (Prologue)

Iris Omerzo sat on a park bench in Wilson Park, and looked at her phone. 12:30 p.m. She told her boyfriend to meet her at their spot before she had to work. It was her favorite bench in the park. On their first date, they swapped spit for ten minutes before Curt suggested they go back to his apartment.

One hell of a night that night, she thought.

She watched the people around her enjoy the park. She watched a younger couple, maybe in their early teens, walking on the bike trail holding hands. Back then relationships were simple, and that's something Iris missed.

Curt walked up to her, blocking her view of the teens walking.

"Hey babe," he said.

His hazel eyes stayed on Iris until he sat down. He swung his arm around the back of the bench.

"Oh, hello Curt. Please, sit down."

She wished relationships were as simple as they were back then. She's lost the spark with Curt. There was no more surprise left for her. She couldn't find any more reasons why she loved him. It's been like that for all of her relationships. After about a month, there was no more love to be found.

"How do you feel?" Iris asked.

She has done this countless of times. Over the years, she has used several different ways of breaking up. She found one that works well for her, and she has used on countless of times.

"Pretty good, it's nice outside," Curt said.

"No, I mean about us."

Curt wasn't the brightest of guys she's dated. She won't miss that about him.

"Oh, us? I think we're great."

"Why do you ask?" He added after a short pause.

"I just don't think we're getting the same things out of this."

"What do you mean by that?"

Iris could see the confusion, and hurt in his eyes already. This was the hardest part. She hated seeing the hurt and pain in their eyes as she told them it was over. She hated hearing the hurt in their voice. But, she was always taught that if she wasn't happy, she needed to change it.

"I just don't think I would have time for a relationship at the moment. Between my job, and the fact that I start my college classes in a few months. I don't have time for you. That, and you have been a little clingy as of late."

Iris was a journalist for The Roslyn News. She wrote weekly columns about anything she wanted. Most of the time it was about something that required more research, so she would spend most of her days in the library. Curt wasn't the bookworm type, and would prefer spending his time at a sports bar than picking up a book.

"Is this because I wanted you to go with me on my family's vacation to Virgina Beach?" Curt's voice cracked, and sounded shaky.

"Curt-"

"Iris, what's going on. Why are we breaking up?"

"I've told you why. I don't feel anything for you anymore."

"So, this is it?"

His knuckles spread white as he gripped the edge of the bench. Tears bead up in his eyes.

"I have to go now. I'm going to be late. It was nice knowing you, Curt."

Iris got up and left as fast as she could. The part she hated the most was the end. She knew he was still there, watching her leave. It was hard for her to not go back and apologize.

She heard him scream, followed by a loud thud. She continued to walk. She chose to ignore him, it was better than turning back.

"I LOVE YOU!"

She walked faster, towards her office, not taking a single chance to turn around.

"YOU'VE MADE A MISTAKE. YOU'LL SEE!"
