The First Day
My day went like usual. I entered the office. I had a harrowing time with the HR woman. I think her name was Amanda. I guess she was promoted. She didn't want anything to do with this Mister Smith anymore. It was said he was a monster. I, with my turquoise hair and rumbling stomach, sat down at my desk. Sandra, my oversight, gave me a list of Mister Smith's tasks. I wasn't to argue or complain. I was just supposed to do them. That's when the booming voice yelled.
"Where's the damn secretary from Pool?! I need her in here pronto! I have to have a dictation taken and she's not here!"
"Yes, Mister Smith." Sandra said.
"Allison, get in there and for God's sake do something with that seaweed." Sandra demanded.
"Yes, Ma'am." I said.
I walked in confidently, placing my hair in a ponytail with the holder I had in my skirt pocket. Bless the creator of this skirt. I hid a roll of lifesavers and my ponytail holder in there for such emergencies as this.
"Hello, Mister Smith."
"What's your name?"
"What's my name? Well, I’m not sure what you want to call me yet but my given name is Allison." I said
"Allison, huh?" He asks curiously.
He noticed my hair. What could I do, apologize? I informed Human Resources when I was in Pool that I had a costume wedding I attended and my hair would be an unnatural color for a few weeks. I prayed he didn’t mind. It’s semi permanent and will wash out in a few weeks.
"What's with the hair?" He asks.
"I was maid of honor in a costume wedding, Sir. This won't hinder my work," I assured him.
The meeting was going well until I asked him this one question.
"What happened to your previous secretary?"
"Well, I’m not sure. HR told me something about how she ran from my office. A few others in the pool whisper about glass shattering and how they heard me yelling and growling from the office..."
"I don’t pay attention to office gossips. They bore me, I apologize. I’d rather listen to music and read."
I noticed his eyebrow raise.
"You’re probably wondering what I listen to or read. I’ll tell you if you want."
"That's up to you. I don't intrude on a young woman's personal time."
"I was listening to a club remix of Madonna and reading a vampire novel. You didn’t expect that, did you? Don’t let the glasses fool you, Mister Smith. While I relax on the way to work, I’m very much at your service while on the clock. Give me the list of things you require me to do and I’ll get what I can done. Nothing is out of my scope of ability, but I do need lunch."
"If you fully accomplish three things on this list, I'll take you to lunch. Your choice, Allison."
"What? If I do three of the things on the list you’re buying me lunch? From an actual restaurant? Something without a drive through window and fluorescent lights?"
"Finish everything and I'll buy you dinner."
"Is this man serious?" I thought to myself.
"Oh, and you might just be inclined to include dinner if I go into a bit of overtime...? I'll work diligently for you, Sir."
Then I looked at him, skeptically.
"Did you do this with your previous assistants? What’s the catch? Pardon my skepticism but I have trust issues. As a matter of fact, if I buy a chocolate chip cookie and I find out it’s a raisin cookie.. I’m not very happy and I tend to be very pouty and grumpy for a few minutes. You appreciate pouty and you know how to fix that? I'll appreciate whatever you do but I'll wait to see what that might be."
Mister Smith not only smiled but laughed.
"I do believe this is the start of a beautiful relationship, Allison."
"Glad to see that I made you smile, Mister Smith."
He smirked.
"I wouldn't mind it if you called me 'Sir' occasionally. I like it... a lot."
"Well, here’s the thing. I don’t really like being called a good girl. I’m not all that good but I’m not bad either. I’m just me. What you see is what you get. I can be a bit sassy but I know when to be good too. Comes with being smart and knowing cues. Intuitive as my grandma used to say. She taught me well. I miss her."
"If you don't mind me saying so; if she looked like you in her younger days, she was quite attractive."
I blushed. I couldn't believe I blushed. How could this man make me blush?
"I’ll let you figure out what to call me. Is it okay for me to get to my desk and get started on today’s work?"
"Thank you, Allison." He said with a wink.
I nearly tripped walking out of the office and I forgot the task list!
"Oh, yeah. It might help if I took my task list with me. Thank you, Sir. I’ll get to work the minute my computer starts."
"No rush. I’ll check in later. Have a good rest of the day."
"I’ll get your coffee while the computer boots. Cream, sugar or none of the above?"
"Black as the dress you're wearing, Kitten."
This is going to be a long work day.
