An Early Beginning
Have you ever wished for something so hard that it actually came true? I've made that mistake before and let me tell you it changed my life in a good and a bad way, let's just say be careful what you wish for.
"Surprise!!!" I wake up with my heart nearly coming out of a chest, my parents and sister are standing near my bed all wide-eyed with huge smiles, I nearly fell out of my bed when I saw them.
I held my chest tightly " are you guys crazy?!! I almost died just now," I told them covering my face with a pillow.
"That's nonsense honey, stop being so dramatic," my mom said while trying to yank the pillow away, but I held firm.
When my attention was finally on them, they all looked at each other and then shouted "one... two... three! Happy eighteenth birthday Cameron!!" they then popped their poppers and confetti flew everywhere, great! Who's going to end up cleaning this, me of course! So if you didn't already hear from my family my name is Cameron, Cameron Cole a now eighteen year old who is surprisingly still living with his parents, which of course was my decision.
" Get out of bed and come downstairs for a special breakfast," my mom said in a bright and cheerful tone as her and my dad headed downstairs.
My younger sister Danielle just stood there giving me a cold stare "just so you know I'm being forced to do this, mom said that if I don't help celebrate my big brother's birthday I won't be able to go to the movies with Katherine on Friday," she said in a sassy tone. I know my little sister more than anyone and she may try to seem cool on the outside, but on the inside I know she secretly enjoys my company. She probably wouldn't be able to survive with my parents on her own anyways, they are a bit eccentric.
"Honestly, I'm surprised you made it this far," I answered her playfully. She was just about to say something back to me when my mom called her from downstairs.
"Danielle!! Come down sweetie and help prepare your brother's breakfast!" I looked at Danielle with a smile.
She just rolled her eyes and whispered " This isn't over," and then walked away slamming my door in the process. Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. After the crazy morning I just had I happened to look at my clock, it was 6' o clock in the morning. School was three hours from now, I could probably go back to sleep, or go down and please my parents. It wasn't bad that my parents still celebrated my birthday, but the little parties they do every year are a bit childish. I guess it's a way for mom to cope that I'm getting older. Why she doesn't do it with Danielle is a question for another day. I slowly got out of bed and got ready for school, it was my usual routine to start with my morning shower. As I was about to head downstairs I stopped to take one glance at myself in the mirror, what's so different about turning eighteen anyways? I don't feel any different, or look any different as a matter of fact. I'm pretty sure nothing special is going to happen today, so I better not get my hopes up. I headed down the stairs and noticed a ton of colorful streamers and balloons covering every corner of the house, it looked like a leprechaun threw up. It was your typical three year old birthday party with hats and all. I was about to had back up the stairs, but my mom spotted me and her eyes were lit up with joy, she walked up to me and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
"I can't believe my baby boy's eighteen," she said as she held my face in her hands. My dad then walked over and gave me one of his oversized bear hugs, and then stepped back and smiled at me.
"Happy birthday son, may all your wished come true," he told me, if only that were true dad, if only that were true. I noticed Danielle sitting at the table without a care in the world. I also noticed my mom staring right at her like an owl eyeing its prey, it was an uneasy sight. I could tell that Danielle began feeling uncomfortable and was trying to not to make eye contact, that's what a moms stare does, it enters into your soul and makes you feel like you're unable to escape. I've had my fair share of those stares. Finally Danielle gave in, with a loud sigh she got up from the table and walked over to me while slightly dragging her feet.
"Happy birthday big brother," she said in one of her most fakest sweetest voice, she then ran up to me and gave me a big hug. My mom held her chest as she was pleased with the sight.
"This is going in the family album!" she shouted as she held up the camera and took a picture of the two of us. As soon as my mom walked away I felt Danielles grip around me getting tighter and tighter. It felt like a death grip I was barely able to breathe, so I decided to return her gift by doing the same. Thankfully her grip began to loosen around me allowing a sigh of relief. She backed away from me slowly with an evil grin plastered across her face, it was enough to send a chill up my spine. I walked over to the table and sat on the opposite side from where Danielle was, our table was circular so it would be quite a stretch for her to get anywhere near me. Even if my birthday wasn't going to be anywhere near special, at least I get to enjoy mom's famous chocolate chip waffles, bacon, and eggs. If there is something that always puts a smile on my face it's my mom's cooking! I looked at the clock and realized it was time to leave, so I gathered my things, just as I was about to head out my mom spoke.
"Don't forget Cameron, head home as soon as school is over, we have a big surprise for you,"she said excitingly.
" Yes ma'am!" If there is one thing my mom enjoys it's planning surprises.
