Prologue

A man wakes up finding himself laying on a bed in a cabin. The air is cold. Which comes off as strange. He could have sworn the weather was supposed to be warm tonight. Even for living by the river. Then again that damned weather station never seems to get it right.

He stands from the bed, and walks into the hallway, flipping the switch. The light in the hall is dimmer than it was earlier. With a sigh he walks down the hall and into the study. To his right he finds the thermostat. What he sees makes him raise an eyebrow.

Seventy five degrees. Can’t be… It’s freezing in here. The light in the hall flickers. The door to the study swings shut. The man gives a cold stare before grabbing the door knob and twisting it.

It doesn’t budge. He tries again. It doesn’t budge.

You bastard! Open the damn door!” He yells.

The cold air begins to fade as the lights in the study begin to flicker. The man jumps when hearing scratching at the door. When it stops something starts banging on the door. He grabs the knob and pulls the door open. The lights in the study go back out, and the hallway light brightens up again.

Slightly startled the man asks. “What the hell?”

He turns around to pull the door to the study shut. Standing in front of him is what appears to be a man who wears a 1970’s styled navy officers uniform. The figure eye’s him with a glare. The man leans against the wall, with his hands to his neck as he gasps for are.

He looks back to the doorway of the study, and the figure is gone. The hallway light begins to flicker as he drops to his knees throwing up orange colored water. He takes notice of a few flakes of rust and falls against the wall.

Max steps out of the second floor bathroom, having finished a morning shower. Izume walks from the library with a somewhat confused look.

“What’s up?” He asks.

She looks to him inquiring. “Do you know a Zven Raza?”

“Yeah, he’s my brother. Why?” The man answers.

Her confused look turns into one of concern as she answers. “He called while you were in the shower, and said something about a family friend who died last night. I tried to ask him what happened but he said he wouldn’t talk about it over the phone.”

“Zven doesn’t act like that unless he thinks there’s a case. I’m guessing the police are involved to some extent. Did he say where he’s at?” He replies.

With a nod she responds. “He said he’s next to your fathers place.”

“Alright. Let’s hit his place and see what happened.” Max says, an uneasy tone in his voice.

Though she wants to say something Izume chooses not to. While she knows the doctor’s side of what is believed to have happened, there’s always more to the puzzle.

They head into the library and grab their weapons and pocket them, before heading downstairs. Max grabs the keys and heads out to start the car while Izume shuts off the main breaker.

The last time he saw Zven was two years ago in northern Toronto. They’ve been in communication every now and then. Zven settled down to help dad their out after he was released from prison last year. Zven’s been pushing for Max to talk with him since they haven’t been able to for twenty years. But he’s been hesitant. How can he look the man who tried to kill him in the eye?

Unlocking the door he gets into the driver side and unlocks the other doors. Placing the key in the ignition he twists it and starts the vehicle. As it revs to life Izume gets in.
