Prologue

In the shadows. I’m always in the shadows, watching. Watching as she lures them away. The most beautiful woman in the world, her brown hair flowing down her back, her laugh that makes the birds sing. That makes me want to sing. Her gentle, but striking green eyes and caramel skin are intoxicating to simply behold. And night after night I see her lure lucky men and women away. She’ll never see me though. Why would she? I’m one of the invisible people.

I wait patiently to see her. Just watching her is enough. She’s not there yet, but she will be soon.

I’m startled from my thoughts by approaching footsteps. I shrink back instinctively, but then I recognise the almost musical sound. It’s her! She stops by the doorway I’m sheltered in I can’t believe what’s happening, it must be a dream. She talks to me, and her voice is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.

“You’ve been watching me for a while, haven’t you? I’ve noticed you too, did you know that?” She stretches out her arm and offers me her hand. I take it eagerly, and follow her back to her house. I know it must be a dream, but I don’t want to wake up. I stumble into her house, in a trance, not seeing the exterior. All I saw was her. She pushed open the door, the same striking green as her eyes, I think.

It’s the last thing I think.
