Chapter 1: The Water Hashira

Snow flew in the air and Tanjiro Kamado, a red headed boy with a burn scar on his forehead and hanafuda earrings, put on his snow boots. He wore dirty gray sweatpants and white t-shirt. The Kamado family were very poor so they’d make their money by selling coal. Tanjiro stood up and put on his green checkered haori before putting the large barrel of coal on his back. Kie, Tanjiro’s mother, walked to him. Kie was a beautiful woman with purple eyes and a distinctive mole under her bottom lip. She wore a purple checkered kimono with a white apron over it and a white cloth around her black hair. She wrapped a torn blue scarf around Tanjiro’s neck and said, “Be safe for me sweetie.” Tanjiro nodded and said, “I’ll be back by sundown.” Kie kissed her son on the forehead and said, “Thank you.” Tanjiro nodded and walked out of the worn down house. Takeo, Tanjiro’s younger brother, ran to him and asked, “Are you going to deliver some more coal?” Tanjiro smiled and said, “Yep.” “Can I come?” Tanjiro let out a light laugh and said, “Next time.” Takeo frowned and said, “Come on. You said that last time.” Takeo wore a brown haori over a white t-shirt and brown torn sweatpants. He also had a green checkered scarf wrapped around his neck and he held an ax. Tanjiro said, “I’m sorry Takeo but you should get back to chopping the firewood. I don’t want mom to be angry with you.” Nezuko, Tanjiro’s younger sister, grabbed Takeo’s hand and said, “Come on. Let’s not slow Tanjiro down. He has very important things to do.” Nezuko had pink eyes and black hair like her mother. She wore it up in a bun and wore a pink kimono, brown haori, and a pink checkered obi. Rokuta, their youngest brother, was asleep on her back. Takeo said, “But” “Come on Takeo. We all have very important jobs. So let’s get back to our chores.” Takeo sighed and walked off. Tanjiro looked at Nezuko and said, “Don’t let Takeo or Rokuta stress you out too much.” Nezuko nodded and said, “Ever since dad got sick, Rokuta wouldn’t stop crying unless he’s near you. I’m just happy I got him to fall asleep.” Tanjiro nodded and began to walk down the mountain.

The wind blew against him but he pushed through the cold air. The coal was the only thing making sure that he and his family ate so he would do anything to make sure that everyone was happy. He walked for almost two hours and made it to the village at the bottom of the mountain. He walked down the street and yelled, “Coal! Coal for sale!” A man in an orange winter coat and black snow pants walked to Tanjiro. “How much for three pounds of coal?” Tanjiro said, “Ten dollars.” The man gave Tanjiro the money and took the amount of coal he paid for. A man in a white t-shirt and striped boxers ran to Tanjiro. His nose was bleeding and a bartender walked to him. “Pay for the drink you spilled!” The man said, “Tanjiro. Please tell him that I wasn’t the one who spilled the beer.” Tanjiro looked at the bartender and asked, “May I see the spill?” The bartender nodded and led Tanjiro to a barrel of spilled beer. Tanjiro sniffed the barrel and said, “That man didn’t spill this barrel. It was a dog.” The bartender said, “Oh. Well, I’m sorry.” Tanjiro smiled and said, “I’m glad I could help.” “Tanjiro, I need some coal.” “Me too.” “Same here.” Tanjiro walked back to the people and began to sell the coal. The sun began to set and Tanjiro was walking up the mountain with an empty barrel. This was one of the better sales he had. He began to count the money. “245, 248, 250. This is enough money to keep us fed for another week.” He said in joy.

He was halfway up the mountain and then something threw him into a tree. He groaned and stood up. It was a deformed person. Their left arm was ten times the size of a normal arm and its right arm was normal but their skin was inky black. It smiled and said, “Free dinner. Don’t mind if I do.” The person charged after Tanjiro but he dove out of the way. The scent then hit Tanjiro and he began to gag. It smelled dead but looked alive. A man then appeared in front of Tanjiro and swung his sword, slicing off the creature’s head instantly. The man had black hair in a messy ponytail down to his shoulders. He wore a brown uniform and a haori with half being red and the other half being a yellow green hexagon pattern. His katana was blue like the ocean and had writing that read, Destroyer of Demons. A crow landed on his left shoulder and he sheathed his katana. The creature then disintegrated and he looked at Tanjiro. “Are you hurt?” Tanjiro shook his head and asked, “What was that?” The man said, “A demon. My name is Giyuu Tomioka. I am a Demon Slayer and the Water Hashira.” Giyuu’s eyes were blue and his face was stern. Tanjiro stood up and said, “I’m Tanjiro Kamado. Thank you for saving me.” The crow let out a caw and said, “Demon! Demon up the mountain!.” Tanjiro looked at the crow terrified and said, “My family lives up the mountain.” Giyuu frowned and took off running up the mountain. Tanjiro tried to follow but Giyuu was gone in a matter of seconds. Tanjiro continued to run but the harsh wind made his lungs sore and he had trouble running. Tanjiro eventually made it up the mountain in thirty minutes and he was hit with the smell of blood. He ran to the house and saw Tanjuro, his father, lying in front of the door. Tanjiro looked up and saw Giyu on the roof with the rest of his family. Giyu jumped down and said, “He was dead by the time I got here. I managed to save everyone else from the demon but if you want to keep them safe. I suggest becoming a demon slayer.”

He then handed a flier to Tanjiro and then looked at Kie. “Ms Kamado. It isn’t safe for you guys here. Follow me and I’ll lead you to a refugee city.” Kie said, “Thank you but we don’t have the money.” Giyu helped everyone down and said, “Don’t worry. My boss will help with that.” “Thank you Mr Tomioka.” Kie said. Giyu nodded and said, “Follow me.” Giyu began to walk down the mountain and the Kamado family followed. Tanjiro held Takeo and Shigeru’s, his other younger brother, hands. Nezuko carried Rokuta, who was crying, and she held Hanako’s hand. Hanako was their youngest sister. Giyu was surprised by the size of this family and how well they were keeping their cool. Nezuko stopped walking and fell to her knees coughing. Tanjiro ran to her and asked, “Are you alright?” Nezuko coughed up some blood and said, “I’ll be fine.” Tanjiro put Rokuta on his back and said, “Let me carry him for a while.” Nezuko smiled and said, “Thanks.” Tanjiro then smelled another strong stench and he looked in the woods. A man in a three piece suit looked at them and Tanjiro asked, “Who’s that?” Giyu looked at the woods but didn’t see anyone. Giyu asked, “What did he look like?” Tanjiro said, “A pale man in a black tux. His eyes were red.” Giyu frowned and saw a cut on the back of Nezuko’s hand. He drew his sword and Tanjiro asked, “What is it?” “Your sister is a demon. I have to kill her.” Giyu raised his sword but Tanjiro and Kie ran in front of him. Tanjiro fell to his knees crying. “Please don’t. Don’t kill my sister, I beg you.” Giyu frowned and said, “Get up and be a man.” Tanjiro looked at him and Giyu said, “I could kill her here and now, leaving your attempts at begging pointless. Stand up and be a man.”

Tanjiro stood up and grabbed an ax. His hands shaking, he stood in front of Nezuko and faced Giyu. His family looked at him surprised and Giyu said, “Go on. Attack me. Kill me before I kill her.” Tanjiro charged after Giyu and swung the ax but Giyu kicked him into a tree. Giyu walked to Nezuko and raised his sword. Tanjiro threw the ax at Giyu but he caught it and looked at Tanjiro. Tanjiro ran towards Giyu and headbutted him as hard as he could. Giyu looked at him annoyed but he then lost feeling in his body and fell to the ground. “That hard ass head.” He stood up and struck Tanjiro in the back of the head with the hilt of his sword. Tanjiro fell to the ground, unconscious, and Giyu was hit into a tree. Nezuko stood in front of Tanjiro growling. She was twice her original size and had claw-like nails. Her pupils were slits and her hair was flowing out. Giyu stood up and yelled, “Get back! The transformation is complete!” Kie grabbed her children and stepped back. She looked at her daughter with tears in her eyes and Giyu prepared to charge after her but he noticed that she hadn’t tried to eat Tanjiro yet. Giyu jumped to the side and her gaze followed him.

He frowned and sheathed his sword. He appeared behind Nezuko and knocked her out with a hand chop to the neck. Giyu looked at his crow and said, “Lead Ms Kamado and her kids to the village. I’ll stay with these two.” Kie asked, “What are you going to do to my children?” Giyu looked at her and said, “These two are different. I’m going to send them to Demon Slayer Academy. That way Tanjiro will be trained to become a Demon Slayer and maybe someone can help your daughter.” Giyu’s crow let out a loud caw and said, “Follow me. Follow me.” Kie picked up Rokuta and the crow took flight. Kie followed it with her children and Giyu waited a few hours. Tanjiro woke up and Giyu said, “Kamado. If you want to help your sister, become a Demon Slayer and learn under Urokodaki.” Tanjiro asked, “How do I find him?” Giyu said, “You need to head to Demon Slayer Academy and study Water Breathing. He’ll teach that but as for your sister. Don’t let her into the sunlight and make sure she doesn’t eat any humans. Now to get to Demon Slayer Academy, take the last train out of here. That’s it for now.” Giyu disappeared and Tanjiro put Nezuko on his back before picking up his ax. Tanjiro walked down the mountain and Nezuko eventually woke up. “Wha-what happened?” Tanjiro continued to walk and he said, “I’m not sure. Mr Giyu first tried to kill you so I fought back and then he knocked me out. Then I woke up and you were alright. Now we’re heading to Demon Slayer Academy but you can’t be in sunlight.” Nezuko groaned and said, “He said that I’m a demon.” Tanjiro didn’t say anything but Nezuko already knew that he was worried.

Tanjiro continued down the mountain and the wind began to pick up. Nezuko said, “I can walk just fine. I don’t want you to be held back because of me.” Tanjiro found a cave so he ran towards it and placed down Nezuko. He sat against the wall and Nezuko asked, “Why didn’t you just let Mr Giyu kill me?” Tanjiro looked at his sister confused and Nezuko said, “A demon killed dad. I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone in my family.” Tanjiro smiled and said, “Nezuko. I know that you wouldn’t hurt me, mom, Takeo, Shigeru, Hanako, or Rokuta.” Nezuko smiled and asked, “Remember the time you saved Takeo from getting burned.” Tanjiro placed his hand over his scar and nodded. Nezuko sighed and said, “I wish I could remain as calm as you. But I have a hard time doing that and Takeo says that I’m scary when I’m mad.” Tanjiro smiled and said, “Same with dad.” Nezuko asked, “What?” Tanjiro said, “When we were younger. Dad took me to the woods and a thirteen meter bear attacked up. Dad told me to watch closely and with one swing of the ax, the bear’s head was off. Dad didn’t smell mad but it was very scary.”

Nezuko asked, “Did dad really do that?” Tanjiro nodded and the wind calmed down. Tanjiro and Nezuko stood up. “Let’s go. The train station isn’t too far now.” Tanjiro calmly said. He and his sister walked out of the cave and down the mountain. They walked for three hours and made it to a train station. Tanjiro looked at the schedule and saw that the final train would be there soon so he and Nezuko sat down. “Aaah! A beautiful girl!” A yellow haired boy wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt, and a yellow haori with white triangles ran in front of Nezuko. Got on one knee and grabbed her hand. “Will you be my wife?” Tanjiro and Nezuko looked at the boy with blank stares and Nezuko asked, “What?” The boy said, “Oh right. I’m Zenitsu Agatsuma and I’m asking you to be my wife.” Nezuko looked at Zenitsu surprised and said, “No!” Zenitsu began to tear up and he asked, “Why not?” Nezuko said, “I don’t know you and I’m still twelve.” Zenitsu began to cry and he held onto Nezuko tight. “Please please please marry me. It isn’t like Demon Slayers live that long to begin with! Come on, please marry me!”

Tanjiro tapped Zenitsu shoulder and said, “Excuse me but she already said no. Shouldn’t you respect a woman’s choice?” Zenitsu looked at Tanjiro and asked, “Who are you trying to interrupt a blossoming romance?” Nezuko pushed Zenitsu off of her and said, “We aren’t getting married and there is no romance. Also that’s my brother.” Zenitsu stood up and asked, “What?” Tanjiro said, “I’m Tanjiro Kamado.” Nezuko frowned and said, “And I’m Nezuko Kamado, not your wife.” Zenitsu wiped his nose and asked, “What are you two doing here?” Tanjiro said, “I’m going to become a Demon Slayer.” Zenitsu shook his head and said, “Don’t do it! Run while you still can because those demons show no mercy!” Tanjiro asked, “Why are you becoming a Demon Slayer then?” Zenitsu thought about it and said, “Fair point. I should just give up all hope and leave while I still can. Oh right, I have to become a Demon Slayer to pay back this man for paying off my debt to a woman that swindled me.” Nezuko asked, “Were you hit in the head as a baby?” Zenitsu said, “Well, if I’m going to die. First I need to find a wife.” The train stopped and Tanjiro and Nezuko stood up. Zenitsu looked at the train and yelled, “No! It’s too early! I can’t die yet!” Tanjiro and Nezuko walked onto the train and sat down in some empty seats. Zenitsu ran onto the train and sat across from Nezuko. “You sure you don’t want to marry me.” “Yep.” “Can you at least consider it?” “Nope.” Zenitsu began to cry and he yelled, “I’m going to die without getting married!” Everyone in the car shushed him and Tanjiro said, “You sure are certain that you’ll die.” Zenitsu said, “You should be too. I’ve heard stories about demons as tall as trees and as quick as trains. On average, five hundred demon slayers are killed in a week. A WEEK AND THEY ACTUALLY GRADUATED! IMAGINE HOW MANY STUDENTS DIE IN A DAY!” Everyone shushed Zenitsu again and Nezuko asked, “When will you stop yelling?” Zenitsu asked, “Which Breathing are you going to learn Tanjiro?” Tanjiro said, “Oh, I’m going to learn Water Breathing.”

Zenitsu saw Tanjiro’s ax and asked, “How many demons have you killed with that?” Tanjiro smiled and said, “None. It’s mainly used for chopping trees but my dad did kill a bear with it.” Zenitsu sighed and said, “Great. Another crazy.”
