Prologue
“Hello! Talia? Are you there?” The person on the other end spoke in confusion.
Teeth sunk harder on her lower lip, tears blurring her eyes, she struggled to swallow the knot in her throat.
“Yeah!” Her voice was barely audible.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't hide the tremble in her tone.
“Ah, okay. So, you be there with me on my special day, right?” The cheerful tone continued on the other side, unaware of her trepidation.
Her grip on the phone tightened, the color leaving her face. “I --- I'll try, Kathy. I'm not sure.” She managed to mumble, swallowing the gushing sobs.
“Come on, Talia. I need my friend on my special day. I decided years ago that you'll be one of my bridesmaids. Besides, you know Owen and everyone here. Please, Talia. Pretty please, for me! You can make me happy with your presence.” The joyous voice on the other end continues to persisting her.
Thalia was writhing inside, wanting nothing but to end this unpleasant call.
“Sure, Kathy. I'll call you later. I--- I'm actually in the middle of something important. Congrats on your wedding.” She tried to sound cheerful but failed miserably.
“Thanks, Talia, I'll be waiting for you. Bye, see ya.” The person on the other end didn't seem to guess her turmoil.
As soon as the call got cut, Talia dashed to the washroom, unable to hold it anymore.
With this phone call, her last hope was gone. What was she thinking, that she'll ever have her happy endings?
Whom should she curse, her stupid heart, which brought this on her, or fate?
