The Ball

Sunlight seeped through the red velvet curtains. My bedroom door creaked open, followed by receding footsteps to my curtains, in which opened with a tiny high pitched screach.

“Rise and shine, Rene,” a familiar voice said with as much enthusiasm as he is happy.

I groan and slam my pillow on my face, “Close the blinds!”

My brother snatches my pillow and smacks me with it, “Ethan,” I exclaim.

Ethan chickles. He’s wearing a dark blue shirt with black pants and a shiny golden chain around his neck and has his black hair slicked back with hair gel no doubt. Nobody’s hair is that perfect. I shove the pillow off my face and sit up, “Okay, I’m up, what di you what me to do?”

Ethan nodded to my nightstand, i look to see three 100 dollor bills. I lean over and hold the cash in my hands, staring at it wide-eyed.

“Where did you get this much cash,” a stare at my brother, shaking the cash, “We don’t have this type of money!”

“It doesn’t matter where I got it, it’s for you to buy a new dress.”

I star bluntly at him, “You know my style, Ethan; why on Earth would I wear a dress?!”

Ethan fished in his pocket and handed me an opened envelope. A growl escaped my throat, “Did you go through my mail?!”

“Only because it was from the Alpha King,” Ethan explained.

I roll my eyes as I scan over the letter, “A BALL?!?” I almost jumped out of my skin. “‘For all the unmated women’?!?!” I shake the letter at my brother, “You know I can’t go to this! We don’t know what could happen!”

“ I already called the palace,” He said calmly, though I could tell he was getting really annoyed, “ tried every exscuse to see if you could stay. They told me I could chaperone you, but you had to attend the ball.”

I groan, “Fine,” then shoo him out my room so I can change. I look over the letter again as I open my closet. I shrugg my shoulders, “At least it’s a masquerade Ball!”

I enter the clothes shop, the bell dings my arrival. I have my long silky black hair in a high ponytail. I’m wearing a plain black shirt with light blue jeans and black high tops. The counter lady whimpers and hides behind her desk, her head peaking out.

“A-anything I can help you with miss?” She whimpered.

I roll my eyes, “Calm down. Anitta! I’m not honna hurt you!”

Anitta relaxes after I resure her. I walk around until I spot a gorgeous black dress. I take it off tge hanger and show it to Anitta. She’s about my age, 22 and unmated. “Does this dress happend to come with gloves?”

Anitta slid her light blonde hair behind her ear and nodds then lowers herself behind her desk before bring out the matching gloves. I thank her then go into tge changing room. I take a moment to examine to dress after I’ve put

The dress was strapless, a little tight around my chest and hips. The skirt of the dress was simple and straight towards the end. My back was bare down to below my shoulder blades which was perfect incase something happened.

I stare at the high heels through the mirror. They were black with silver rims outlining the shoe. It had a soft leather fabric covering the base if my toes. Then lastly to secure the shoe on my foot, it had a tiny leathe belt around my ankle and had a skiny heel, with silver on the bottom.

I place the gloves on. They were black silk, went up to my wrist then slowly faded into lines of silk wrapping around my arm, before connecting below my shoulders.

“Miss? May I see how it looks,” Anitta knocked on my changing stall door, nervousness quivering in her voice.

I open the door and walk out. Anitta stared at me in awe. “Rene! You look. . .”

“Ugly? Terrible? Emo? A witch?” I finish for her, reciting every word that I’ve been called tgrough out my life. She shakes her head, “You Look gorgeous!”

I look at her, “Really? Is-is that good?” I’m genuinely curious. All my life people (except Ethan) have surrounded my ears with those 4 words. ‘Gorgeous’ was not one of them.

“Of course! Would you like to bye it for the Ball?”

“Yes please. . .” I responded still looking at myself in the mirror.

Anitta left but came back with a wooden box and handed it to me. “What is this?”

“It’s a masquerade Ball, correct,” i nod. “This is a mask I had designed for this specific purpose.”

I open the box and i gasp. Its silver with black outlining the fire-like edges of the mask. I thank Anitta and ask her how much is it for the set.

“The whole set is 1500 dollars, but I’ll offer you a discount,” she offers while I follow her to the cashier after i change into my regular clothes.

“Your total is $300,” she states.

I hand her the change and thank her. When I got home, Ethan begged me to put back on the outfit. When I should him, his eyes watered, “my baby sister is all grown up!”

“Spare me the emotional tears,” i wave him off, “By the way, when’s the Ball? I forgot already.”

“Tonight,” he replied.

“WHAT?!”
