Prologue

"They didn't tell me, hun,' She whispered. "Get dressed I'll drive you up to your Pap's house." Nan has always taken care of me and ever since she and Pap got divorced when I was in middle school she's been very focused on her grandkids. So we did we got in the car she drove me the 45 minutes and I endured 5 hours with my mother, brother and 10 year-old sister along with Pap and his wife while Nan sat in her car.
My mother decided to start an argument with my father knowing he hadn't taken his medication for his Schizophrenia, depression and anxiety in days and then she took my sister and left for Pap's. So he decided to hang himself from the rafters on a second story deck. I was heart broken and something wasn't sitting right.
My mother said that they argued and she was tired of it so she just left. But she never took Jai with her for any fight, my dad was the parent. He cooked, he cleaned, he helped with homework and tucked us in. Mother was the kind of parent that used our big events for herself, only paid us attention when she needed something from us or yell at us because something in her life wasn't going right. So for her to sit here looking at me with tears in her eyes, clutching Jai like a cherished childhood stuffed animal and telling me this story of I just couldn't leave her there in case something bad happened, made me feel like she knew it was going to.
I've been suspicious ever since, she didn't even have a funeral for him. Then mother cremated him, quickly. Once I found that out I asked Nan to start teaching me the darker side of the family secret, the one my mother didn't know. Witchcraft.
