Chapter 1

The evening descended upon Los Angeles like a velvet curtain, casting shadows that danced across the city streets. In the heart of downtown, the prestigious Hilton Grand Pavilion awaited the arrival of its distinguished guests for the annual American Industrial Excellence Awards. A black Mercedes approached the underground parking lot and a man of commanding presence and authority emerged from its sleek confines.

Strands of his slightly tousled jet-black hair fell delicately across his chiseled, oval-shaped face, framed by sharp jawline and high cheekbones. Adorned in a finely tailored velvet blazer in a rich shade of midnight blue, the fabric hugged his lean, athletic frame with precision, accentuating the contours of his stature which complemented his fair complexion.

The man entered the hall and took his place among the audience, observing the ceremony with a keen eye.

All eyes were on the stage as the anchor Sarah Reynolds, a former actress and supermodel, elegantly took center of the stage. With a beautiful smile, she grasped the microphone, her voice carrying through the hushed anticipation of the audience.

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and industry leaders, welcome to the prestigious American Industrial Excellence Awards Gala!” “Tonight, we gather to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of individuals and organizations within the industrial sector. It is with great honor and excitement that we recognize the excellence and innovation that have propelled our industries forward, shaping the landscape of our nation’s economy. Without further ado, let us commence this evening’s festivities and pay tribute to the exceptional talents and accomplishments that define excellence in American industry.”

As Sarah paused, the sound of the audience applauding echoed the halls.

“The first category is ‘Best Startup of the Year’ “.

The hall was filled with suspense as Reynolds opened the envelope, her eyes scanning the contents before a bright smile graced her lips.

“...Apex Innovations!” she announced, her voice ringing out with clarity. Applause erupted as representatives from Apex Innovations made their way to the stage, their faces beaming with pride and excitement.

“My heartiest congratulations to the team!” exclaimed the former actress, her voice carrying over the applause. With graceful poise, she extended the prestigious award to the Chief Representative of Apex Innovations.

Dressed in a resplendent emerald green tulle gown, Reynolds exuded elegance and charm as she presented the accolade and a bouquet of roses.

“Mr Mitchell Hayes, we’d like you to say something on behalf of your team.”

Mr Hayes stepped forward, his expression one of gratitude and pride as he addressed the audience. “Thank you very much, for choosing this team. On behalf of Apex Innovations, I want to express our deepest gratitude for this recognition. It is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and innovation of every member of our organization. This award not only validates our efforts but also motivates us to continue pushing the boundaries of excellence in our industry. Thank you to our clients, partners, and supporters who have believed in us every step of the way. This award belongs to each and every one of you. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence and make a meaningful impact in our industry and beyond.”

The anticipation reached its peak as after announcing a few more categories and names, Sarah announced the most prestigious awards of the evening.

“Now, I’m sure all of us have been patiently waiting for this moment,” declared Sarah with excitement. “But, ladies and gentlemen, this time the Best CEO of the Year award is going to be a bit different because...”

She paused, allowing the suspense to build, as the audience leaned in with anticipation.

“This year, we’ve encountered an unprecedented situation,” she continued. “Normally, we have only one award for the best CEO, regardless of gender. However, for the first time in history, we found not one, but two individuals whose achievements were equally remarkable and deserving of this prestigious accolade. They each brought unique strengths and outstanding leadership to their respective companies, and it became clear to the judges that they were on par with each other.”

The audience gasped as a buzz of intrigue rippled through them.

“As a result,” she said, “we’ve created two awards: one for the Best Male CEO and one for the Best Female CEO. These two outstanding leaders, though working in different sectors, have demonstrated equal levels of excellence, innovation, and vision. And now, I have the honor of announcing the recipients of these prestigious awards.”

“The Best Male CEO of the Year award goes to... the Spanish star of the night- Damian Alvarez of Alvarez Industries!”

“And, the Best Female CEO of the Year award goes to none other than the talented Anastasia Scott of Nexus Apparels! ”

A thunderous applause filled the grand hall as Reynolds revealed their names, the audience rising to their feet in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

The young woman wore a violet gown that flowed around her like a cascade of rich silk. Its color complemented her fair complexion, enhancing the natural warmth of her skin. The gown boasted a classic A-line silhouette, draping elegantly from her shoulders to the floor in soft, billowing layers with golden embroidery adorning the bodice. Her brown and burgundy balayaged hair, styled in loose curls, framed her face with effortless grace, while a single diamond statement necklace shimmered at her throat, catching the light and adding a hint of sparkle to her look.

Heads turned and hearts skipped a beat as Damian ascended the stairs to the stage alongside Anastasia.

“Congratulations, Damian and Anastasia.”

“You’ve both done an excellent job leading your companies to the forefront of the industry, gaining international acclaim” praised Reynolds as she handed them the accolades and flower bouquets consisting of long stemmed blood-red and cream-colored roses tied together with a satin silver ribbon.

Anastasia accepted her award with a small dip and a half smile on her full lips. The accolade featured a bronze statue holding the earth with its outstretched hands, and the honoree’s name inscribed on a sturdy golden plate. Damian, with a slight nod of his head, acknowledged the cheers from the audience, his expression composed but his piercing green eyes full of an unknown emotion that was anything but happiness.

Jealousy.

Hatred.

Anger.

Yes – those were the only emotions in his eyes.

The stage lights shone on the two young stars, making Damian’s velvety midnight blue blazer shimmer, his silver moon-shaped brooch on his lapel catching the light while Anastasia’s violet gown seemed to have an innate glow.

Their eyes shifted towards each other, revealing a subtle flash of anger and irritation. They had both expected to stand alone on this stage, basking in the glory of being the sole recipient of the Best CEO of the Year award. The shared recognition stirred feelings of disappointment and envy.

“Now, we’d really like you both to say something to the members of the audience, many of whom aspire to follow your footsteps?”

“Thank you, thank you,” Damian began, his voice lined with a thick Spanish accent, as he adjusted the microphone to his height. “It’s an honur to be recognized, even if it’s not quite the honor I was expecting”, he said with a playful smirk. A ripple of light laughter moved through the audience. Damian’s green eyes swept across the room, his gaze lingering briefly on Anastasia. He held up the bronze statue, tilting it slightly to catch the light.“Sharing this award with someone as accomplished as Ms. Scott is... well, it’s definitely a unique experience,” he continued, the corners of his lips twitching with a hint of irony.“I mean, it’s not every day you get to be the ‘best CEO,’ and then suddenly, it’s ‘best CEOs.’ But, that’s life, right? Full of surprises.” The audience chuckled again, though there was a sense of uncertainty. He paused, allowing his words to sink in before he continued. “I’d like to thank my team at Alvarez Furniture. Without their hard work, I’d probably be... somewhere else right now. Literally. And to the industry at large, thank you for the competition. It keeps things interesting.”

Damian’s eyes locked briefly with Anastasia’s, before he concluded his speech. “Here’s to everyone who dreams big and plays to win,” he said smirking slightly, “I’ll be seeing you at the top. Thanks again.”

He handed the microphone back to Sarah, a smile on his lips but a hint of sharpness in his eyes.

“Thank you, Damian. It’s a pleasure to have you here”.

“Anastasia, please”, said Sarah, as she motioned her to the microphone.

Anastasia took a moment before speaking, the gold and green flecks of her hazel eyes shining as brightly as stars.

“Thank you, Sarah, and to everyone for this honor. I’m grateful to be standing here”. “But what a night, huh! You know, I was told there’d be one Best CEO award tonight,” she said with a touch of mock surprise, “but it turns out there’s two. I guess that makes me lucky... or unlucky, depending on how you look at it”, she said, her lips parting into a smirk. The audience laughed, sensing her dry humor. Anastasia continued, “I’d like to thank my incredible team at Nexus Apparels. They work hard, they innovate, and they manage to put up with me—no easy task, I assure you.” She paused, giving the crowd a playful glance. “I’d also like to thank my family for always supporting me. Even when I told them about tonight’s award, their first question was, ’Who are you sharing it with?’,” she chuckled. So, here’s your answer,” she said, gesturing toward Damian with a sly smile. The audience laughed again, appreciating her light-hearted approach. “But in all honesty, it’s a privilege to be recognized at this stage beside Mr Alvarez by the Awards Team. Entrepreneurs are driven and focused and... maybe a little competitive, but that’s what makes this industry exciting, right?”

“To everyone aspiring to be in this field, remember— keep pushing the limits and stick to your dream because one day you’ll achieve what you deserve”, she smiled “and... even if you’re sharing your award, you’re still among the best. Thank you.”

“Thank you very much, both of you”, said Sarah.

Damian and Anastasia descended the stairs and took back their seats again.

“Thank you to everyone who came here to this ceremony. We’re glad to have been in your company this evening”, her voice warm and friendly.

The evening concluded with a final round of applause and the lights dimmed as guests rose from their seats and began to mingle.

The ceremony had ended, and the grand hall was emptying as the guests moved toward the exits.

Damian stood near a tall column with a relaxed posture, holding his award with a loose grip, occasionally tilting it to catch the reflection of the city lights.

Anastasia approached, her violet gown swishing lightly with each step. She stopped nearby but didn’t bother with formalities.

“So, you made it,” she said, her tone flat. “Or should I say, we made it?”

Damian didn’t even turn to look at her.“Sí, we made it,” he replied.“Not exactly what I had in mind when I planned my evening, though. Sharing an award with someone who’s... let’s just say, not my first choice,” he said, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Anastasia’s lips curled into a smirk, but her eyes were cold. “Right, because your ass thought you were the only one winning the spotlight” she replied. “Must be tough, having to share the stage with someone who actually earned their place.”

Damian’s green eyes flashed. ”Earning, it is one thing,” he said, turning toward her with a challenging look. But sharing it, really? That’s a whole different game. I didn’t sign up for this buddy system.”

Anastasia shrugged. “Don’t worry, I’m not your buddy,” her tone dismissive. “Just don’t trip over your own ego on your way out. Wouldn’t want to damage that pretty brooch,” she added, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Damian smirked.“Cuidado, la niña (careful little girl), I think you’re the one who needs to watch out. That gown looks like it could get tangled in your own rotten pride”.

She winked and smiled, her red lips looking extremely inviting.“La niña? See you at the top, El niño(little boy)”

“Only if you can keep up, Ms. Scott,” he replied with a smirk. “Nice Spanish, by the way”.

Anastasia rolled her eyes. “You wish, Damian,” she said, her voice icy. “But I guess pretending you’re ahead is easier than admitting the truth.”

Damian leaned in closing the distance between them. He was dangerously close to her, his green eyes locking with her hazel ones.“Right, because you’re all about the truth, aren’t you? Tell me, how many lies does it take to get you to the top?”

Anastasia bit her lips. “Not as many as it takes for you to stay there,” she retorted, her voice smooth but sharp. Just don’t trip over your own delusions, okay? I’d hate for you to fall off your high horse.”

Damian’s expression darkened, but he maintained his composure. “Gracias por el consejo (Thanks for the advice), but I think I’ll manage.” “You, on the other hand, might want to watch out for your throne. It’s looking a little shaky.”

Anastasia raised an eyebrow. “Don’t worry about my throne. Focus on your own. It might not be around for long if you keep sharing it” she said, her tone dripping with condescension.

They stood there, glaring at each other, neither backing down. After a moment, they walked away in opposite directions, each with a smirk, knowing they had just met their match.

This first chapter immediately pulled me in — the setting is glamorous, but there's a delicious tension simmering underneath it all. The way you described the mysterious man in the crowd made me instantly curious about who he is and what role he’ll play. Your writing feels cinematic and elegant, and I love how you've layered intrigue right from the start. 💫
