Chapter 1
A wonderful day to be alive, the sun was out and shining, the birds were up and singing, and freshly baked pancakes were on the griddle. The stitched cat, Archibald, lay in a patch of sunlight. Green and purple felt warm in the sun’s glow. Beverly walked into the girls room calling out that breakfast was done. “Come to the kitchen girls! I have chocolate pancakes and maple syrup waiting for you!” She opened the door to see the girls standing on top of a seven sided star. One of the girls, the one with long hair, was chanting something in latin from a book. The other was dancing around throwing flour around. “Girls, what did I tell you about summoning monsters in the house! Your parents will not be pleased by the mess.” She said the last part a little to herself. Too late however. With a CRACK and a burst of smoke something appeared right in front of them. Face initially obscured it flipped something onto its head and spoke in a fabulous voice.
“Howdy there folks! I’m Lucious the demon of sickness.” The smoke cleared to a man wearing a black double breasted red pinstripe suit. He had a black shirt underneath and an embroidered red tie. And a singular red rose sat on his lapel. Topped with a tophat you’d think he was a regular guy. If it wasn’t for his head. Witch was a bird skull with long horns budding out.
“Girls what have you done!” She asked, shocked. The girl with long hair and a turtle neck responded.
“A boyfriend for you.” She said putting her book down.
“But why?” Beverly asked as the thing began looking around the room.
“For fun. We wanted to summon a demon and we wanted to watch an adult drama. Two birds, one stone.” The girl with pigtails and a black dress responded.
“What TV wasn’t enough for you girls?”
“Oh it was fine for me, it was bookworm here that I didn’t have enough of it. First it was TV shows like Pride and Prejudice, to fanfiction, then it was dating simulators, now it’s watching our maid go through a relationship with a demon.”
“You aren’t old enough to be doing any of that! Leave now or you’re going to be late for school.”
“But what about breakfast?”
“I said LEAVE!” They were promptly kicked out of the house.
Veronica and Taylor sat in the science lab of their old school house. It was called a science lab but the school was built in 1850 so it was really just a converted boarding house. It sat a little ways from the main school house. The teacher was talking about how different animals were able to live up in high altitudes without dying from cold. Bookworm listened intently jotting it all down, on the other hand dimwit was too busy doodling a lion eating a person. Though both girls were really thinking about Beverly and her new suitor. BAM an explosion behind them. The class jumped, the girls turned to see a girl with frizzy red hair putting down two vials.
“We aren’t teaching chemistry, Miss Betsy Fitzgerald, please refrain from mixing chemicals.” The teacher lectured.
“Oh it wasn’t such human chemicals. It was magic!” This piqued the twins’ interest. Studying the girl more closely.
“Whatever it is, please stop making it go boom in my class.” The class resumed like usual.
After school was over for the day Taylor and Veronica stalked their prey like cats stalk a bird. Betsy met up with a friend, some girl in their class. Her name was Georgina Maxwell, she had dark skin. However the girls didn’t like the both of the girls fashion taste. The school uniform was a dark green and these girls had the gaul to wear a bright pink shirt, Georgina, and a bright blue shirt, Betsy. Not to mention the same taste in hyper pop, which they played from a loudspeaker in hand. The girls were sick of hearing it every morning and afternoon.
The breeze picked up sending a shiver down the girls’ spines. Luckily the school supplied winter uniforms, though they were delayed due to snow up north. Stupid expensive private schools, stupid rich people tendencies to import Canada’s finest material. The girls thought miserably. Betsy and Georgina finished talking before walking home from school together. The girls crept along hiding behind bushes if necessary.
“Hey, what are you two doing?” Shane asked from behind them. They grabbed him and pulled him into a bush clamping his mouth shut with dimwit’s strong hand.
“We’re staking what we think is a witch.” Bookworm said.
“We need her for an experiment that we’re working on.” Dimwit added letting go of Shane’s mouth.
“Why don’t you just you know talk to her.” He asked reasonably.
“Ask a witch? Do you know how dangerous that is? What if she turns us into pumpkins, or worse. And I don’t think my own whichcraft will be enough to protect us.” Bookworm stated.
“Trust us it’s better to know a witch’s magical abilities before trying to befriend one.”
“We had a cousin who tried to befriend a witch.”
“Now that cousin stares at us from the mantel.”
“They shrunk down that small?” Shane asked.
“No, they were turned into a deer.”
“And our dear father accidentally shot the deer. But on the sunny side they now can join us every night for dinner.” Shane nodded at this.
“Can you let go of me now, I need to get home to my family before my father gets worried.”
“But your hair is so frizzy and fun to play with.” Dimwit said brushing a hand through Shane’s short black hair. One strange glance from bookworm made dimwit let go of him. They sat in an awkward silence until Shane just got up and left. “I didn’t, I don’t know what I was…” Dimwit tried to explain.
“It’s fine, I think his hair is fun to play with too. But now it’s time for the mission, catch the witch.” The two got back to work. They quickly found their target again at the church, the center of town. And from there it wasn’t too difficult to stalk them to their house. The girls watched from some of the house next door bushes as the girls made their way into the house. They presumed that it was the witch’s house not Georgina’s, due to the front porch having an eerie looking Jack o’ Lantern looking out. They waited ten minutes before deciding to move from their hiding place. Veronica and Taylor found their way to the back of the house hugging the edge of the wall. They saw some light peeking out from the ground, they both ducked down and looked through. Through the window was a cellar, where they could see the girls setting up an ouija board. A cauldron sat on the far side of the room. The witch had gotten out of her school uniform, she was now wearing a pastel blue witch dress and hat. It was puffy and reminded the twins of that blue fairy from Sleeping Beauty. Georigna was now in a clashing pink shirt with an orange top. She sat on the ground pulling out some tarot cards and organizing them. The girls gave each other a glance, fashion was not these girls’ strong suits. Georgina was putting some warding crystals down around the board.
“Don’t they know it’s better to use warding charms than crystals?” Bookworm observed.
“I wonder what spirit they will try to communicate with?” Dimwit stated scratching her chin. Crack! The girls looked at each other petrified with fear. Crack! The window that they were leaning on hinges suddenly burst open, spilling the girls onto the floor. They landed with a Thud!
“Bind!” The witch had flipped a wooden stick and the girls were bound by ropes back to back. They both looked as the frizzy red haired witch and her friend came up to them with dirty expressions on their faces.
“Who do you think you are barging in here?” Georgina demanded. The dimwit grabbed a knife from her pocket and started sawing. The bookworm gave the spiel.
“Well you see miss witch, me and my dumb sister don’t have such magical abilities as yours and that seems to have made us hit a brick wall of sorts.” Bookworm lied. She saw Georgina’s frown start turning into a sneer. She decided going faster would be for the best. “Well anyway we summoned a demon to be our ghost maids boyfriend and we wanted to see if you had a potion to make that process go any faster. Me and my sister…”
“Just you.” Dimwit mumbled.
“Oh sorry yes of course. I have an obsession with all things drama like the great Shakespeare plays of old. I’m a literary artist and need inspiration. So how does that sound, if you make this potion for us, we’ll do you a favor for you.” That was her proposition. Betsy looked at Georgina and shook her head.
“I have no interest in meddling in others’ love affairs. I’m being generous, Georgina would you mind grabbing the doll.”
“With pleasure.” Georgina rushed to the back and brought a doll to Betsy.
“I’ll only take DNA from you just in case you do a stunt like this one again.” Dimwit started working faster at the ropes. “I’m sure you know what this is,” she held a stitched doll up. “Voodoo doll, Ushi no Toki mairi, or just a doll of witchcraft, it’s been called many things.” She reached for the girls’ hair. “With this I’ll have complete control over you and you’ll do my bidding!” Snap! The binds broke and bookworm slammed a smoke against the ground. A puff of smoke and vapor hid them from Betsy and Georgina.
“Honestly we think you’re pretty cool.” One of the girls said.
“Please come by our house whenever, and bring those tarot cards we love.” And with that the smoke cleared and the girls were nowhere to be seen. Betsy laughed to herself.
“Did those girls amuse you?” Georgina raised an eyebrow.
“Oh yes they seem like interesting people, let’s take them up on their offer. But like not immediately, I need to know what kind of power the girl with the long hair has.”
The girls ran out of the house to a startled Mrs. Fitzgerald. Escaping out the door and onto the sidewalk. Shane stood outside with a bicycle and a wagon attached. He called for them to hop on. The girls did so and they biked off. “I thought you needed to go to your parents?” Dimwit said out of breath.
“I did, but I figured that you needed the help due to it being a witch and all. You never know what is going to happen then.” The girls laughed to themselves letting Shane bike them to the woods. He waved at them and took off back to his own house.
“Well it would seem like we managed to make two more friends today.” Dimwit stated.
“Oh what a bother. What if they come over to our house? What peace would we have then?” lamented bookworm.
“And what if they ask who’s name is who’s? That seems like it’s going to be a problem later on. We can’t keep calling each other dimwit and bookworm.”
“So it looks like our next adventure is quite clear.” Dimwit looked at Bookworm strangely. “Go into the haunted library and find who’s name is who’s!” They laughed and plotted on the way home.
When they got home they were shocked to see Beverly in an evening gown entertaining Lucious. They were both sipping wine with candlelight. “What is happening here?” Bookworm asked.
“Well you girls were right, this guy, Lucius, gets me, we have so much in common. Oh sure we had our differences at first but I think after a couple of fights we love each other.” Beverly reached over and the two held hands.
“OH COME ON I MISSED IT!!!!!” Screamed bookworm into the fast approaching night.
The End
