The Proposal No One Asked For

The room felt heavy with the weight of unspoken words as she sat across from Harold. The air between them was thick with tension, their once effortless conversations now replaced by awkward silence. Her father had just delivered the life-altering news, the same man who, until now, had kept her protected and sheltered from the ugliness of the world. But there was no sheltering from this.

She could still hear her father’s voice, frail but firm, as he told them both of his plan; how it was his final wish to see her settled with someone he trusted before his time ran out. And Harold, being the son of his closest business partner and practically family, had been the chosen one. The only one.

Harold, the man who had treated her like a sister for as long as she could remember, now sat stiffly beside her, his discomfort painfully evident. His jaw was clenched, his eyes fixated on the coffee table as though it held the answers to his dilemma.

She studied him quietly, noticing the tightness in his posture, the way his fingers absentmindedly tapped against his knee. She had known this man her whole life; every smile, every quirk, every habit. But today, he was a stranger to her. Perhaps that’s what happens when you’re forced into a situation no one ever wanted.

“I can tell you’re not comfortable with this,” she finally said, her voice cutting through the silence like a knife. Harold shifted in his seat but didn’t meet her eyes. “You don’t have to say it. I know you’ve never thought of me like that.”

He looked up, a mix of guilt and relief crossing his face. She could tell he was torn between obligation and the bond they had shared since childhood, and it only made her heart ache more. She had to make this easier for him, for both of them.

“Harold,” she continued, her tone more resolute now, “this marriage is purely a contract. I have no expectations. None of this is real, and it doesn’t have to change anything between us.”

She inhaled deeply, steadying herself before speaking again. “I know this is... unexpected. Believe me, if I could refuse, I would. But this is my father’s last wish. He’s done so much for me, and I can’t say no to him, not now.”

Her voice softened, and for a moment, her gaze dropped to her lap as the weight of the situation pressed on her. She knew her father didn’t have much time left. The doctors had been clear: weeks, maybe months. And while this marriage wasn’t what she’d dreamed of, it was what her father wanted, what he believed was best for her.

“I just need you to understand,” she said, lifting her eyes to meet Harold’s, “you don’t owe me anything. This is a contract, nothing more. You won’t have any responsibilities to me or this marriage. I don’t expect anything from you.”

Harold’s brow furrowed, the tension between them thickening as her words hung in the air.

“And if you ever find someone... someone you want to spend the rest of your life with,” she continued, her voice steady but her heart aching at the thought, “we can end this marriage. No questions asked. I won’t stand in your way. This, whatever this is, doesn’t have to last any longer than it needs to.”

Her words hung in the air like a lifeline, offering Harold an escape from the weight he had felt since her father’s announcement. He glanced at her, finally meeting her eyes, but what he saw there only deepened his unease. There was no expectation, no resentment, just quiet acceptance.

He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “Serena, I... I don’t know what to say,” he began, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “This isn’t what I imagined for either of us.”

“I know,” she said softly, her hands folded in her lap. “But we don’t have a choice, do we?”

Harold sighed, leaning forward, his elbows resting on his knees as he stared at the floor. “Your father... he’s like a second father to me. I’d do anything for him. And for you, of course,” he added quickly. “But this” He waved a hand between them, “This doesn’t feel right.”

“I understand,” she said, her voice gentle. “And that’s why I don’t want you to feel trapped. I meant what I said: there are no expectations from me. You can live your life however you want. We’ll just... get through this. Together, for now.”

Harold glanced at her, his face conflicted. “But what about you, Serena? You’re sacrificing everything for your father’s wish. It’s not fair.”

She offered him a small, sad smile. “I’ve come to terms with it. I love my father, Harold, and I want him to have peace before he... before he’s gone. If this is what it takes, then so be it. I’ll be fine. And as for you, I don’t want you to feel tied down by this.”

His jaw tightened. “You shouldn’t have to do this alone. I mean, we’ve known each other forever. If this is happening, then I’m not just going to leave you to deal with everything. Contract or not, you still deserve more than just... nothing.”

She shook her head, appreciating the sentiment but not wanting to burden him further. “You’re not leaving me. You’re helping by just agreeing to this. That’s enough.”

Harold frowned, frustration flashing in his eyes. “This whole situation is messed up,” he muttered. “But if we’re doing this, Serena, I won’t let you carry it all by yourself.”

She looked at him, surprised at the determination in his voice. He wasn’t enthusiastic about the arrangement, but there was a part of Harold that felt responsible, not just for the promise to her father, but for Serena herself.

She felt a lump rise in her throat. She wasn’t sure if his words were a comfort or just made things harder. But she nodded, grateful for the promise, even if it wasn’t the one she had always dreamed of hearing.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

And in the quiet that followed, she understood that nothing about this arrangement would be simple.
