Chapter 1: The Burden of the Crown
The weight of the crown had never felt heavier for King Alaric—known as King Ace to his people. The grand hall of the castle, with its towering stone walls and shimmering tapestries, echoed with the sound of hurried footsteps and urgent whispers. His kingdom, Valtoria, stretched far and wide, its influence reaching beyond mountains and seas. But power came with a price, and since his coronation only a few months ago, King Ace had found himself buried in diplomatic meetings, military strategies, and alliance-building.
King Ace sat at his grand oak desk, papers scattered before him. He scanned them quickly, his mind already racing to the next task. His broad shoulders tensed beneath his royal tunic as he read over another treaty proposal, eyes flicking over each word with precision. The immense responsibility of ruling the kingdom weighed on him, but his resolve was unwavering.
James, his trusted adviser and assistant, stepped into the room quietly, his footsteps soft on the marble floor. He was a loyal companion, always by the king’s side since their boyhood. Though not of noble birth, James had risen through the ranks through sheer loyalty and intelligence.
“Sire,” James began, bowing his head slightly. “The northern alliance treaty has been reviewed by the council. All that’s left is your approval.”
Ace sighed, placing the papers down with a quiet thud. “Another alliance. If we form any more, we’ll be holding hands with half the continent.”
James allowed himself a brief smile before returning to his composed demeanor. “I believe it strengthens our position, Your Majesty. Especially with the unrest in the east.”
Ace nodded, his hazel eyes sharp with focus. “You’re right, James. As always. Now, for tomorrow, I want you to prepare the men and horses. We leave at dawn. It will take four days to reach Castillon, but we’ll stop for two days at the kingdom of Armandale. The king of Armandale has invited us, and it’s on the way. It would be rude not to accept.”
“I will make the preparations immediately, sire,” James replied with a bow, already stepping back to exit the room.
“James,” Ace called, halting his retreat. “Make sure everything is in order. I want no delays.”
“Of course, Your Majesty.”
As James left the room, the door opened once again, and the soft rustle of a familiar dress announced the presence of someone Ace held dear—his mother, Queen Helena. She swept into the room with grace, her presence commanding without needing words. Though she no longer ruled, Queen Helena still carried herself with the regal authority of a queen, and her sharp gaze fell on her son.
“Alaric,” she began, using the name only she could call him. “Have you eaten anything today?”
He glanced up from his work, surprised by her sudden appearance. “No, mother, I’ve been busy. There’s much to handle before the journey tomorrow.”
Helena shook her head, her eyes softening as she moved closer to him. “You must take care of yourself, my son. You’re the king now, yes, but you’re still a man. Skipping meals won’t keep this kingdom running.”
“I know, but—”
“No excuses,” she interrupted, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. “And there is another matter.”
Ace sighed, already anticipating where this conversation was headed. “If this is about me getting married—”
“It is,” she confirmed, sitting in the chair opposite his desk. “You are the king now. The people expect an heir, a queen by your side. And I... well, I would like to see you settled, Alaric. You’ve been so consumed with your duties, you haven’t given it a second thought.”
Ace ran a hand through his dark hair, exasperated. “I’m too swamped with work, mother. I can’t focus on finding a wife right now.”
“Ruling will always demand your time,” Helena countered gently. “But you need someone who can stand beside you, who can bear the weight of this crown with you.”
“I’ll think about it,” Ace said, not wanting to linger on the topic. He respected his mother’s wishes, but the idea of settling down felt like another responsibility he wasn’t ready for.
Helena gave him a knowing smile, standing once again. “Do think about it, my son. The crown may be heavy, but it doesn’t have to be carried alone.”

Arora’s POV
The scent of fresh earth and blooming flowers filled the garden, a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the castle. Arora knelt by a bed of roses, her delicate hands covered in mud as she tended to the flowers herself. Her dress, once pristine and elegant, was now smudged with patches of dirt, but she didn’t care. This was her sanctuary.
“Your Majesty!” a familiar voice called from behind her, slightly breathless. It was her lady-in-waiting, Mairi. “Please, you shouldn’t be doing this! We have gardeners for these tasks.”
Arora turned, offering a smile despite Mairi’s obvious dismay. “I know, Mairi. But this brings me peace. I need this.”
“But, Your Highness,” Mairi persisted, wringing her hands nervously. “What if someone sees? Princesses shouldn’t be seen in the gardens like this. It’s... improper.”
“I’m not concerned with propriety,” Arora replied, standing up and brushing off her skirt, though it did little to help. “Sometimes, a princess needs a moment of peace.”
Mairi bit her lip, glancing around before hesitating. “Your bath is ready, Your Highness. Would you care to... freshen up?”
Arora laughed softly. “Yes, I suppose I should clean up before Father sees me like this. Lead the way.”
After a relaxing bath, Arora dressed in a flowing gown, leaving her long brown hair in a half-up, half-down style, cascading down her back. Feeling refreshed, she made her way to her parents’ outdoor living quarters, where her father and brother often discussed affairs of the kingdom.
As she arrived, her father, King Edmund, smiled warmly. “Ah, Arora, come sit with us.”
Her brother, who sat beside their father, gave her a playful nudge as she sat. “I hear we have an important guest arriving tomorrow,” he said.
Arora raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Who might that be?”
“The King of Valtoria,” her father replied. “King Ace. He’s stopping by on his way to Castillon.”
Arora’s heart skipped a beat. She had heard tales of King Ace—his power, his ruthless army, and most of all, his striking presence. Many spoke of his allure, his masculine strength, and how women often found themselves captivated by him.
Curiosity filled her mind as she tried to imagine what he might be like. The stories painted him as a king unlike any other. She wondered if the reality would live up to the legend.
“Well,” she said softly, her mind drifting. “I suppose we’ll see soon enough.”
