Chapter 1 : Bagas' Life

In the middle of the beautiful but unfair land of Arthapura, there lives a young man named Bagas. He grew up in a small village far from the glitz of the city, where all forms of oppression and injustice are daily food. His life is wrapped in hard work and sacrifice in order to simply survive and maintain his family’s dignity. In the small village of Arthapura, Bagas’ life is a never-ending struggle against injustice and oppression. Every day is a fight to survive under the grip of a corrupt ruler. However, in the midst of the darkness of fate, Bagas and his family find strength in their determination and undying spirit.

The local ruler in Bagas’ village is known as a cruel and corrupt figure. The taxes set are very high, often unreasonable, and burdensome for farmers like Bagas’ father, Pak Samin. The harvest that has been hard-earned must be handed over mostly to the ruler. Not only that, the ruler’s men often come to collect taxes in harsh ways, even threatening and blackmailing residents who are unable to pay on time. This adds to the suffering of Bagas’ family which is already heavy with various limitations.

Bagas and his family live in crushing poverty. Every day is a struggle to meet basic needs such as food and clothing. When food on the table is running low, they often have to go into debt to buy rice. In conditions like this, every penny counts. Young Bagas is used to working hard. Every morning, he helps his father in the fields, hoeing the soil and planting seeds under the hot sun. His small hands are full of wounds, but his spirit never fades.

In addition to working in the fields, Bagas also does various odd jobs to help the family economy. He often helps neighbors who need additional labor, whether to clean the fields, repair houses, or other jobs. Although fatigue often comes, Bagas’ determination to change his family’s fate is always a strong driving force. He knows that all his hard work is for the welfare of his family.

The social inequality in the village where Bagas lives is very striking. Rich families live in luxury with big houses and all the facilities, while Bagas’ family has to fight hard just to survive. Every time Bagas sees his friends who are richer, he feels inferior and sad. However, this feeling does not discourage him. Instead, he is determined to change his fate through education.

In the midst of all the difficulties, Bagas still has big dreams. He dreams of getting a good education and one day being able to free his family from the shackles of poverty. Every night, even though his body is tired after working all day, Bagas always takes the time to study. Under the dim light of an oil lamp, he reads old books with high spirits. He knows that knowledge is the key to opening the door to a better future.

His mother, Mrs. Siti, always gives encouragement and wise advice. “Never give up, son. This difficulty is only temporary. One day, you will see the light at the end of this dark road,” she said. Those words became a mantra for Bagas, encouraging him to continue fighting tirelessly.

Bagas’ life under oppressive rule is a real picture of how hard the struggle is to live amidst injustice. However, behind all that, there is determination and spirit that never goes out. Bagas is a symbol of hope and resilience amidst injustice. Through his story, we are invited to see how strong human determination is in facing various obstacles.

Bagas teaches us that in the midst of darkness, there is always hope. In the midst of difficulties, there is always an opportunity to rise. With strong determination and high fighting spirit, there is no obstacle that cannot be overcome. Bagas is not only fighting for himself, but also for his family and the surrounding community. He is living proof that even in the most difficult circumstances, humans have the strength to survive and achieve a better future.

Bagas comes from a simple, loving family but is constrained by economic limitations. His father, Mr. Samin, is a farm laborer who works hard to work on their small field. Every day, Mr. Samin has to fight fatigue and illness in order to produce a small harvest that can be sold to meet the family’s needs. His mother, Mrs. Siti, helps the family’s economy by working as a tailor. Although her income is not much, Mrs. Siti’s sewing is a very meaningful source of additional income for their family.

Bagas’ family lives in a simple, old and fragile wooden house. The walls are full of gaps that allow wind and rain to enter easily, while the floor is made of clay that hardens in the summer and becomes slippery in the rainy season. However, this small house is always filled with warmth and love from his family.

Although he is still young, Bagas is used to hard work. Since dawn, he has been awake to help his father in the field. He carries a heavy burden on his shoulders without complaining, walking along the path with bare feet to the rice fields. Every day, Bagas works under the hot sun, hoeing the soil, planting seeds, and watering the fields. Even though his hands are full of wounds and calluses, his spirit never dies.

After working in the fields all day, in the evening Bagas takes time to study. Under the dim light of an oil lamp, he reads old books inherited from his deceased brother. His desire to change his family’s fate keeps him motivated to study, even though fatigue often comes. Bagas dreams of getting a good education and one day being able to provide a better life for his family.

The environment where Bagas lives is a poor area that is often neglected by the government. Basic needs such as clean water, electricity, and health facilities are very minimal. They have to walk far to get water from a well located at the end of the village. The water that is available is often murky and undrinkable. Electricity only comes on for a few hours a day, that is if there is no blackout.

The absence of health facilities means that local people have to rely on traditional medicine. Many villagers, including Bagas’ family, have to endure pain because they cannot afford to go to the city for treatment. This condition is made worse by the corrupt local government that does not care about the fate of the common people. High taxes and extortion are additional burdens that they must bear every day.

Despite living under pressure, Bagas and his family never lose hope. They continue to fight with all the limitations that exist. Their courage and determination are an inspiration to many people in the village. Bagas always believes that with hard work and strong determination, he can change the fate of his family and the people around him.

Bagas’ life under oppressive power provides a real picture of the injustice experienced by many people in Arthapura. However, behind all the limitations, Bagas still has big dreams that motivate him to continue fighting. Readers are invited to feel the injustice experienced by Bagas, while also being inspired by his fighting spirit.

Bagas is a symbol of hope and resilience in the midst of injustice. Through the story of his life, we are invited to see how strong human determination is in facing various obstacles and how love and sacrifice can be an extraordinary force in overcoming life’s difficulties.

Bagas and his family live under the shadow of corrupt and oppressive power. Their days are filled with various forms of injustice that feel so real and suffocating. Oppression by greedy rulers made their lives even more difficult. High taxes and extortion became a burden they had to bear every day, adding to the suffering in an already difficult life.

In the small village where Bagas lives, the local ruler is known as a cruel and corrupt person. He often extorts villagers with various illegal levies. Every time there is a harvest, most of it must be handed over to the ruler as a form of ‘tax’. The taxes set are unreasonable, very high and burdensome for farmers like Bagas’ father. Not infrequently, people who are unable to pay taxes on time are threatened with losing their land or property.

Bagas’ family is often the victim of this unfair policy. They have to work hard just to meet the suffocating tax demands. If there is a small shortage, the ruler and his men do not hesitate to come to collect roughly, sometimes accompanied by threats and violence. Bagas often feels angry and helpless seeing the injustice they have to experience, but he knows that fighting back will only bring more problems for his family.

Poverty is a close friend of Bagas’ family. Every day is a struggle to meet basic needs. They often lack food and have to go into debt to buy rice or other basic necessities. When the harvest is inadequate, they are forced to pawn the few valuables they have or borrow money at high interest rates from village loan sharks.

Young Bagas is already accustomed to this bitter reality. To help his family, he works hard every day in the fields. He also often helps neighbors with odd jobs to earn a little extra money. Although his body is often tired and exhausted, Bagas never complains. He knows that every penny he earns is for the welfare of his family. There are times when he has to miss school because he has to help in the fields or look for additional work.

Social inequality in the area where Bagas lives is very real and striking. While rich families live in luxury with big houses and all the facilities, families like Bagas have to struggle hard just to survive. Every day, Bagas witnesses this striking difference with mixed feelings of envy and anger.

This difference in social status not only affects the economic aspect, but also Bagas’ psychological and emotional aspects. He often feels inferior and lacks self-confidence when dealing with his richer friends. However, behind all that, there is a strong determination in him to change his fate and fight against the injustice that exists.

In the midst of all the difficulties he faced, Bagas still had big dreams for his future. Bagas’ enthusiasm and perseverance became the main pillars in his life’s journey. He knew that the only way to change his fate was to try his best. Bagas promised himself that he would not give up, no matter how difficult the obstacles he had to face. He always remembered his mother’s advice: “Never give up, son. This difficulty is only temporary. One day, you will see the light at the end of this dark road.”

When the harvest fails or bad weather destroys the crops, Bagas’ family must borrow money at high interest rates from village loan sharks. Their lives seem trapped in a cycle of poverty that is difficult to break.
