Chapter 1: A Distraction in Busan
Author's POV
The sun dipped behind the skyline of Busan, painting the streets in hues of amber and gold. Kim Taehyung sat in his sleek black sports car, his fingers drumming rhythmically on the steering wheel. The sound of the mechanic tinkering under the hood grated on his nerves. Time was slipping away, and Taehyung hated wasting it. His life ran on a schedule-precise, uncompromising.
"Yes, mom, I'll handle it," he said into his phone, his voice clipped. "The car's being serviced right now. After today, I'm done with it. Alright, take care. Bye." Ending the call, he exhaled sharply, his patience wearing thin.
The minutes dragged on like hours. He glanced at his watch-ten more minutes lost. He debated hailing a taxi back to Seoul but dismissed the thought. That wasn't his style.
Finally, the mechanic signaled him. Taehyung climbed into the driver's seat, turning the key. The engine roared to life, but just as he was about to drive off, something-or rather someone-caught his eye.
Across the street, a woman walked with an elegance that demanded attention. She wore a flowing black gown that danced lightly in the breeze, her head covered by a sheer black dupatta. A small bag hung over her shoulder, and in her hand, she carried a book. Her steps were purposeful, her posture regal.
Taehyung froze, his hand hovering over the gearshift. There was something magnetic about her-something he couldn't put into words. His chest tightened as his heartbeat quickened. For a fleeting moment, he felt compelled to follow her, to know her story.
The sharp buzz of his phone jolted him back to reality. His PA's voice was a reminder of the meeting he was already late for.
"Sir, the meeting is about to begin. Shall I push it back?"
Taehyung cleared his throat. "Yes, delay it. I'll be there soon." Ending the call, he looked back toward the street, but the woman was gone.
With a heavy sigh, he shifted into gear and drove to the office, her image seared into his mind.
---
At the office, Taehyung entered the conference room, ready to immerse himself in work. Yet, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't focus. Her face-the way her dupatta framed her-kept invading his thoughts. Shaking his head, he forced himself to concentrate, but the distraction lingered.
Later that evening, Taehyung returned to his apartment, hoping a long, hot shower would clear his mind. Emerging refreshed, he flopped onto his bed, but sleep wouldn't come. Every time he closed his eyes, she was there. Her silhouette, her graceful walk-it was maddening.
"Why?" he muttered into the silence. "Why can't I stop thinking about her? This is insane." He ran a hand through his damp hair, frustration boiling over. "Have I fallen in love? No. No way. That's ridiculous."
Just then, his phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, he picked up. "Hello, Jimin."
"Tae, Jungkook and I are coming over to play some games. Be ready."
"Perfect timing. I was bored out of my mind."
"Bored? You? Kim Taehyung? This I have to see," Jimin teased.
"Just get here."
"Alright, see you soon."
---
Half an hour later, Taehyung opened the door to find Jimin and Jungkook grinning at him. He ushered them in, heading to the kitchen to grab snacks.
"How are you, hyung?" Jungkook asked as Taehyung returned.
"Good. You?"
"I'm great," Jungkook replied. "Let's play."
They moved to the gaming room, settling in front of the PCs. But something was off. Taehyung, usually unbeatable, kept losing. Jimin and Jungkook exchanged glances, their suspicions growing.
"Tae," Jimin finally said, "What's going on? You're terrible today."
"I don't know," Taehyung mumbled, avoiding their eyes.
"You? Don't know?!" Jungkook exclaimed dramatically. "Hyung, you're a gaming legend. Spill it-what's up?"
Taehyung hesitated before finally confessing, "I... I saw a girl today."
"A girl?" Jimin and Jungkook chorused, leaning closer.
"Yes, a girl. I can't stop thinking about her. It's driving me crazy."
Jungkook gasped. "Hyung, are you in love?"
"Love?" Taehyung scoffed, though his cheeks turned pink. "That sounds ridiculous. But... maybe. I don't know. Every time I try to focus, her face just-appears."
Jimin smirked. "This is big. The Kim Taehyung, smitten? Who'd have thought?"
"Stop teasing," Taehyung muttered, rubbing his nape.
"Describe her," Jungkook urged.
"She was... breathtaking. Elegant. Like she belonged in a different era. I couldn't look away."
Jimin and Jungkook exchanged knowing looks. "You're definitely in love," Jimin declared.
"How will you find her?" Jungkook asked.
"I'll go back to where I saw her," Taehyung replied. "Same time, same place."
"And if she's not there?" Jimin asked.
"I'll find her," Taehyung said firmly. "I have resources."
"Good luck, hyung," Jungkook said. "And when you see her, take a picture. We need to see the girl who stole your heart."
---
Later that night, as Jimin and Jungkook lounged on the couch in Taehyung's apartment, they were engaged in yet another round of relentless teasing. The TV was on, but none of them were paying attention to it. Taehyung sat in the armchair, staring off into space, lost in thought.
“Hyung, you’re spacing out again,” Jungkook remarked, tossing a pillow at him. “Seriously, what is with you today?”
Taehyung caught the pillow absentmindedly and sighed. “It’s her. I can’t get her out of my head.”
Jimin smirked, leaning forward. “Okay, so we know she’s beautiful, elegant, and clearly living rent-free in your mind. But come on, Tae, give us more. What’s so special about her?”
Taehyung leaned back, closing his eyes for a moment. “It’s not just her beauty. There’s... something about her. She walked like she carried the sun with her. It was in the way she moved, the way she held herself. She looked... warm.”
Jungkook blinked. “Warm?”
“Yes, warm,” Taehyung repeated. “Like she could brighten the darkest day just by existing. It sounds crazy, but that’s what I felt. It was like the whole world faded, and all I could see was her.”
Jimin whistled. “Wow. She’s really got you tangled up, huh?”
“She does,” Taehyung admitted, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t even know her name, but I keep calling her something in my head.”
“What?” Jungkook asked, sitting up, intrigued.
Taehyung hesitated, almost embarrassed, before finally saying, “Sunshine.”
“Sunshine?” Jimin repeated, a slow grin spreading across his face. “Well, well, that’s new. Why Sunshine?”
“Because that’s what she is,” Taehyung said simply. “She looked like she carried the light of the sun with her. Like she could chase away every shadow. I don’t know... it feels right.”
Jungkook burst into laughter. “Hyung, you’re so far gone. You’re calling a stranger Sunshine like she’s already yours.”
“Maybe she is,” Taehyung muttered under his breath, his gaze distant.
Jimin shook his head, still smiling. “You’d better find her, Tae. Otherwise, you’re going to lose your mind obsessing over your Sunshine.”
“I will,” Taehyung said with quiet determination. “I don’t know how, but I’ll find her. She’s not just someone you let slip away.”
Jungkook raised his soda can. “Okay,Now the next mission is to finding Taehyung's Sunshine!”
Taehyung smirked but didn’t say a word. Inside, though, he felt a renewed resolve. Sunshine. That was who she was to him. And he wasn’t going to stop until she was in his life.
---
That night, they prepared dinner, watched movies, and talked late into the night. But as Jungkook and Jimin dozed off, Taehyung lay awake, his thoughts consumed by her.His thoughts were a whirlwind, but the one thing that stood out was the promise he'd made to himself. He had to find her.
The soft hum of the city outside seemed to mock him, distant yet omnipresent. The coolness of the sheets on his legs did little to calm him; it was like his body was at war with his mind. He could feel the weight of his exhaustion, yet his heart refused to slow, each beat echoing with the image of her. His body was tired, but his soul... was restless. The clock read 2:40 A.M., but sleep was a distant dream.
---
The next morning, Taehyung woke to find Jimin and Jungkook staring at him.
"Finally," Jimin said. "We were about to call an ambulance."
"Why?" Taehyung asked groggily.
"You slept in!" Jungkook exclaimed. "It's 8:10 a.m.! Who are you, and what have you done with Kim Taehyung?"
"I couldn't sleep last night," Taehyung admitted. "Every time I closed my eyes, she was there."
"Hyung, you've got it bad," Jungkook teased.
Taehyung chuckled weakly. "I'm going back today. I need to see her again."
"Good luck, Tae," Jimin said as they finished breakfast.
"Thanks. I'll need it."
And with that, Taehyung set out, determined to find the woman who had turned his world upside down.
