Chapter 1

It was the summer of 2012; Carly was getting ready to start high school at the end of August, but she got an idea. She’d been dancing since she was around four or five years old, she couldn’t remember right in that moment, but she knew it had been a long time. So, she decided she’d start posting dance videos on YouTube. She didn’t think it would be her career or anything, but she wanted to document herself getting better, or worse, over time. It was just something she loved to do, aside from singing and acting, but she hadn’t been training in those, not really. She was in choir in middle school, and did the school musicals, but she was no ‘triple threat,’ as they would say.

She couldn’t really dance to a lot of the music she listened to, well, except maybe some Panic! At The Disco Songs, but definitely not the Black Veil Brides or Pierce the Veil. Okay, she was a bit of an emo kid, but wouldn’t you be if you got picked on in middle school? Anyway, she had to turn over a new leaf, she had to stop being sad and wallowing in her sadness. She was going to be going to high school, people talk about that being the best years of your life, right? So, she needed to make herself believe that as well. She listened to plenty of pop music growing up, maybe she could choose one of those songs, she had dance class that evening, so she could talk to her dance teacher about it, Miss Diana, she was fun, but also knew when to get serious and get things done. She quickly changed into workout clothes, she was no longer in the ballet, tap, and tumbling class, she was too old for that, though it had been fun. She was trying out hip hop and contemporary, which alternated each week. This week was hip hop.

When her mother dropped her off, Carly walked in, she was the first one, as usual, because she was the anxious type who didn’t want to be late to anything, even if it meant being stupidly early. She did some stretching and then walked over to Miss Diana, who seemed to be going over evaluations from one of her other classes.

“Hey Carly, what’s up?” Miss Diana asked, looking up from her papers.

“Um, I have a question,” Carly said, suddenly now nervous.

“I figured as much,” Miss Diana sat her paper down, “what’s the matter. You not wantin’ to do dance anymore?”

“No, no, nothing like that! I just, uh, had an idea this morning and wanted to ask your opinion on it. I’ve been dancing for quite some time now, and I was thinking of starting to post videos of me dancing on the internet to not only keep track of me improving, or not, over the years, but also just to see if other people like watching me dance. The thing is, I don’t know what song to do first,” Carly explained.

Miss Diana looked relieved, and a little confused, “Post videos of yourself on the internet? That can be dangerous, you know.”

“Yes, I know, my mom told me the same thing when I mentioned it on the way here. I don’t plan to say where I am or anything like that. I’d just post the videos under my name and either film in here, or at Zona Rosa, or the Plaza or something. Heck, even the park. It just seems like it would both be fun and a learning opportunity,” Carly tried to reason.

“Alright, alright, I believe you. Do you have a list of songs or anything?” Miss Diana asked.

“No,” Carly replied sheepishly.

“Okay, well, look, I’ve gotta get back to going over these evaluations before class starts, but take some paper and this clipboard, see if you can write down some songs, say about ten, and then after class, come up to me and we’ll see what we can do, alright?” Miss Diana said, handing Carly a piece of lined paper, a clip board, and a pen, then returning to her work.

Carly sighed and began writing songs down, starting with ‘Hollaback Girl’ by Gwen Stefani, then ‘Since U Been Gone,’ by Kelly Clarkson, ‘Shut Up and Drive’ and ‘Pon De Replay’ by Rhianna, ‘Girlfriend’ by Avril Lavigne, ‘Cooler Than Me’ by Mike Posner, ‘Promiscuous’ by Nelly Furtado, ‘Fergalicious,’ by Fergie, ‘Unwritten’ by Natasha Beddingfield, and finally, ‘Fireflies’ by Owl City. By the time she was done, the rest of her classmates had shown up and Miss Diana’s daughter, Melissa, was getting ready to teach the hip hop class. She quickly laid the paper down on Miss Diana’s desk, then joined her classmates.

After about an hour and a half, maybe two hours, class ended and Carly was drenched in sweat, even with the air conditioner on in the studio. It had been an intense workout today, but she liked that, it made her feel good afterwards. She approached Miss Diana and asked, “So, did you take a look?”

“Yes I did, all of those are good song choices, well, except that Nelly Furtado one. Do you know what that word means?” Miss Diana asked.

“Not really, no,” Carly responded.

“Then that’s more than enough of a reason to not do it, great, that one is off the list,” Miss Diana said, a little too quickly, but Carly just ignored it.

“Okay, well, how about the others?” Carly asked.

“Well, a few I haven’t heard. Do you happen to have them on your phone or iPod, or whatever it is you kids have these days?” Miss Diana asked.

Carly pulled out her iPhone 4 and opened her music. She did have the songs on iTunes, but she hadn’t bought the music, she just downloaded it, probably illegally, but she wasn’t going to tell her dance teacher that. She first played ‘Hollaback Girl,’ the censored version. She didn’t want to scar Miss Diana for the rest of her life, hearing the word ‘shit’ come out of her 15-year-old student’s phone.

“That’s a good one, next?” Miss Diana said, and Carly went through all of the other songs before she heard her mother honk her horn.

“So, what do you think?” Carly asked.

“I would say, ‘Pon de Replay,’ by Rhianna, Melissa can help you make some choreography, but I believe your mother is ready to go,” Miss Diana said with a small laugh.

“Carly, come on! Didn’t you say you wanted to go to your grandma’s this weekend?” Carly’s mother, Jenn, called out.

“Coming,” Carly called, then turned back to Miss Diana, “I’ll see you and Melissa on Monday.”

“Alright, have fun,” Miss Diana said with a smile and Carly quickly changed out of her dance clothes and followed her mother out of the dance school.

I'm intrigued. There seems to be a good foundation for a great plot and character development. Some sentences are quite long, though, and could definitely benefit from a few periods instead of commas. So far, excited to see what will happen next :)

Obsidian: I liked the story. It was great in its own way. I'm the type that likes the night clubs, the cities, the dark allies.
