Prologue
The full moon hung low in the sky, casting a cold silver light over the forest. Shadows stretched long across the clearing as the sounds of growls and snarls echoed through the trees. It was a night that would be etched into the memories of the Silverfang Pack forever—a night of betrayal, blood, and exile.
Alpha Marcus knelt on the frost-laden ground, his breath visible in the icy air. His once-proud frame was battered and broken, his dark eyes filled with a pain that went beyond the physical. Surrounding him were the wolves he had once called family, now standing as adversaries, their gazes filled with judgment and fear. In the center of the pack stood Elias, his amber eyes gleaming with triumph.
“You were supposed to lead us,” Elias hissed, his voice carrying a venomous edge. “But instead, you brought us to ruin.”
Marcus shook his head, blood dripping from a gash above his brow. “I have done nothing but protect this pack,” he growled, his voice low and steady. “Whatever lies you’ve spun, Elias, they will unravel. Truth always finds its way.”
Elias chuckled darkly, stepping forward. “The truth? The truth is whatever the pack chooses to believe.” He raised his voice, turning to address the gathered wolves. “Marcus has betrayed us all! He consorted with rogues, jeopardized our safety, and endangered our future. As Alpha, I will see to it that we thrive once more!”
The pack howled in agreement, their loyalty shifting like the wind. Marcus looked around, his heart sinking as faces he had known for years turned away from him. He glanced back to where his mate stood, clutching their young daughter tightly against her chest. Kaia’s wide, innocent eyes met his, her small body trembling with confusion and fear.
He turned back to Elias, his voice a growl of defiance. “If you think this is over, you’re a fool. My blood runs strong, and my family will not bow to you. Not now, not ever.”
Elias smirked, his fangs gleaming in the moonlight. “That’s where you’re wrong, Marcus. You’re done. Your bloodline will die in obscurity, forgotten by the world. Take your family and leave. If I ever see your face again, I won’t hesitate to kill you.”
The pack parted, forming a path that led into the dark woods. Marcus rose unsteadily to his feet, his mate rushing to his side to help him stand. Together, they began the long walk away from the only home they had ever known, the weight of betrayal heavy on their shoulders. Kaia clung to her mother, silent tears streaming down her cheeks as she looked back over her shoulder one last time. The clearing shimmered in the moonlight, and she would forever remember the faces of those who had turned their backs on her family.
As the forest swallowed them whole, Kaia whispered, her young voice barely audible over the rustle of leaves, “Why do they hate us?”
Her mother tightened her hold, her voice breaking as she replied, “Because they fear us, little one.”
Above them, the moon watched, cold and indifferent, as their footsteps faded into the night. It would be years before Kaia understood the truth of her lineage and the destiny etched into her blood. For now, she only knew the quiet promise of the forest and the haunting melody of wolves howling in the distance.
