Chapter 1: The Dining Party

The Boga residence was quiet as the last of the guests arrived, their footsteps muffled by the thick carpet that stretched throughout the grand hallway. The manor stood at the edge of town, its aged stone façade barely visible through the mist that had settled around it. Inside, the dining room was warmly lit, with the soft glow of candles flickering across the polished wood of the long table. The guests—two couples and their young son—gathered at their seats, exchanging pleasantries as they settled in for what promised to be a lavish dinner.

Mr. Boga, round-faced and dressed in a dark suit that strained slightly at the buttons, sat at the head of the table. His wife, Mrs. Boga, was a picture of composed elegance, her movements graceful as she poured wine into delicate glasses. She smiled at each guest, her eyes flicking occasionally to her husband, who seemed content to dominate the conversation with his deep, booming voice.

The food was rich—beef Wellington with roasted vegetables—and the conversation, as was often the case with such affairs, turned to politics. Mr. Boga’s opinions were as grand as his belly, and he spoke with confidence, as if he alone possessed the truth about the state of the world. His guests nodded politely, some with genuine interest, others merely listening to fill the awkward silences that came between his long-winded monologues.

But as the main course was being served, a faint odor began to drift across the table. At first, it was almost imperceptible, a subtle shift in the air, like the faintest hint of something unpleasant. The guests glanced at each other, their noses twitching, unsure whether it was just a trick of the senses.

Then it grew stronger.

The smell, once barely noticeable, was now undeniable—a sharp, acrid scent that seemed to seep from nowhere. A mixture of something rancid, earthy, and distinctly... wrong. Some guests subtly shifted in their chairs, their faces tightening, but they said nothing. Mrs. Boga’s gaze darted quickly around the table, but she remained silent, her smile frozen.

Timmy, the Boga’s young son, sat at the far end of the table. His legs swung nervously beneath him as he poked at his food, eyes downcast. His face, pale in the candlelight, seemed to grow even paler as the smell intensified. A bead of sweat appeared on his forehead, and he shifted uncomfortably in his chair, wishing the evening would end.

One of the guests—a man with a thick mustache—coughed, his eyes watering. “Something smells off,” he muttered, wiping his mouth with a napkin. His gaze shifted around the table and landed on Timmy, whose face was now a perfect shade of red.

Mr. Boga, ever the showman, paused mid-sentence, his grin widening. “Ah, I see the young man is experiencing a little... discomfort,” he said, his voice booming with amusement. “Don’t worry, Timmy, happens to the best of us, doesn’t it?”

Timmy froze, eyes wide, wishing he could sink into the floor. The guests politely looked away, trying not to notice, but the silence in the room made everything feel a thousand times worse.

“Here,” Mr. Boga continued, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Let’s all give Timmy a round of applause for that... impressive contribution to the evening’s atmosphere!” He clapped his hands loudly, causing everyone to shift uncomfortably in their seats.

Timmy’s face burned with embarrassment. He tried to shrink into his chair, praying to disappear. The other guests exchanged awkward glances, half-hearted chuckles rising in an attempt to ease the tension.

Mrs. Boga’s hand shook slightly as she poured more wine, her smile now tight. “It must be something with the food,” she said quickly, her voice wavering slightly.

But Mr. Boga wasn’t done. “Well, Timmy,” he said, leaning back in his chair, a teasing glint in his eye, “I’d say you’ve truly made an impression tonight. We might have to start calling you ‘The Windbreaker.’” He gave a hearty laugh, clearly enjoying the spotlight as Timmy’s embarrassment deepened.

The guests, unsure how to react, joined in with hesitant chuckles, trying to mask their discomfort. The room had shifted, no longer filled with political discussions but rather the odd sensation of trying to pretend nothing had happened.

As the evening went on, the smell lingered, though now it felt like just another unfortunate moment in an already awkward dinner. By the time dessert—an elaborate chocolate mousse—was served, the tension had shifted into a strange, forced joviality. No one would openly mention the incident again, but Timmy would remember how his father’s teasing had left him feeling smaller and smaller in that moment.

And as the guests departed, each of them stepped out into the night with a slight, lingering chuckle, trying to shake off the odd memory of that evening—though none would ever quite forget the windbreaker at the dinner table.
