Chapter 1 Bar Fight
Kurt's POV
After a long week of school assignments and tests, it's nice to just sit back and hang out with my friends. I just spent hours working on my final project and could really use a drink.
If I keep it up, I'll have my BS in computer science a year early. My friends have no idea I'm a straight A student. They also have no idea that I'm taking my school seriously. After all, I've got an image to maintain, and a science nerd is definitely not what I'm looking for!
My buddies and I have our own little biker gang. Nothing horrible, we just like to blow off steam riding our bikes. I love the adrenaline rush. It's like a drug. Sometimes we get a big group together and just ride through the mountains and back roads. It's fun! When I'm on my bike the stress of the world just seems to melt away.
"So, I met this girl yesterday... Her name is Brittany," Jason smirks taking a sip of his beer. We've only been here for 10 minutes and he's already looking like nothing matters.
"Is she hot?" I ask, not really caring one way or the other. I think I know who he's talking about, but Brittany isn't my type. She's the bossy bitch type. But if he really wants someone like that, more power to him.
"Hell yeah! She's got a body like-"
Jason was cut off by Braxton pulling him by his collar and snarling. "You'd better not be talking about Brittany Campbell!" What the hell flew up his ass? We were just talking!
Jason gives Braxton an eye roll, "And what if I am? What are you gonna do about it? " He challenged. "She told me she needed a man to take care of her needs," he chuckled, taking another slow pull from his beer.
"Brittany is mine!" Braxton growled. "Don't you dare touch her! She doesn't know what she's talking about! I'm her man and I am all she needs!" Braxton argues, shaking Jason like a rag doll.
"Actually, she told me you tried to convince her to sleep with you a month ago and she declined... She said you weren't her type," Jason chuckled. I don't like the look in his eyes. He looks like he's trying to wind up Brax, and that never ends well.
"Hey, Jay, you might want to be careful," I warned. I actually don't know what the hell is going on tonight. Jason is not normally the one to start fights. That would be Danny and Braxton. The two of them are hotheads, so why the hell is Jay all of a sudden goading the dude?
"What are your plans for the weekend?" I ask, trying to change the subject. Sometimes it will work and defuse the tension, but it doesn't seem to be helping tonight.
Braxton sends me a death glare. "Shut the hell up, Kurtis. You can stay out of this!" He snarls at me. "This is between me and Jay!"
I've known Braxton for years, and when he's pissed like this, he can be dangerous. I don't want my buddy ending up in the hospital because the bastard can't take a little cold hard truth. Honestly, I wish the guy would think before he acts. I swear one day he'll end up behind bars for some impulsive move.
"I'm not scared, Kurt! What can he do anyway?"Jason insisted. "If Brit wants me she can have me, and I sure as hell want her! She was so damn hot! She kept me up all night long," he giggles like a little girl.
I really didn't want to know about that, actually. Yes, my buddies and I tend to over share our sex lives. I don't know why. Actually our sex lives seem to be public knowledge. I guess none of us really cares that we have a reputation for being players. But right now is probably not the time for this discussion because Brax looks like he's contemplating murder.
Why can't Jason just keep his mouth shut for a bit? And why the hell is he acting so weird? I still don't understand that! He's not normally one to flirt with danger like this. Normally he has a very level head on his shoulders, but now... he's acting... high.
My stomach twists into knots. Jay does not do drugs!
I look at Jason and his face is ruddy, but I thought that was from the beer. His eyes are not quite focused and the guy is acting like a freaking lunatic. Where the hell would he have even gotten drugs from?
I look around, hoping to find out friends. Normally Ian can rein Braxton in, but it doesn't look like they've made it to the bar yet. Damn. I would really like some back up here.
"Jay, let's... go wait for the guys outside?" I suggest. I need to get Jason the hell outta here. Maybe the outside will wake him up a bit? I'd be more than happy to help him walk whatever the hell is happening to him off.
Jason shoves off Braxton with a cocky smirk. "Sure thing, Kay. It's a nice warm night... Getting kinda stuffy in here anyway," he snickered. He grabs his beer and I sling his arm around my shoulder, no longer in the mood for mine, and I help him walk through the busy bar.
I sigh in relief he isn't resisting. As long as I can keep these two apart for a bit we are gonna be fine. I still want to know what is going on with him... However people don't tend to realize something is off with them when it's happening.
The night air is not cool in the least. It's freakin' hot and the sun went down 2 hours ago. I was kinda hoping for a nice cool breeze, but it's late spring, so what did I expect? It's been in the 80's and 90's all week. Maybe I can take him to the beach? Or not. I'm not really wanting to trip over the damn rocks in the dark.
"Jay, you doin' okay? You've been acting kinda off for a bit," I state carefully.
"Naw man, I'm good. Actually, I'm feeling really good," he chuckles like he's told the most amazing joke. I don't like that at all.
"Dude, are you on drugs?" I ask what I've been wondering.
"What the hell, dude. You know I won't go near drugs!" He growls angrily.
"I know man! I know, it's just... You're acting a little off tonight," I sigh, not sure how to get him to tell me what's going on.
Jay gives me a funny look and just shakes his head before lifting his beer to his lips again, leaning up against one of the poles outside the bar.
"So, you seen her recently?" Jason asks with a sly smile. Why the hell is he bringing this up? I'm starting to wonder if the guy suffered brain damage at some point.
I play ignorant. "I don't know what you are talking about." This is something I don't like talking about at all. They can ask me who I slept with all they want, but she's off limits. I've been trying to play it off like she doesn't mean anything to me... It's why I've bullied her for so long.
"Dude, yeah you do. You've been stalking her since high school. Are you ever gonna grow a pair and actually talk to her like a human being?" He teases, shoving my shoulder with his. I swear the guy is gonna pass out any minute now.
I grind my teeth. I really don't like talking about her or my inability to actually have a conversation with her without trying to piss her off. Why couldn't I be obsessed with someone normal? I could have picked any other girl... but for some reason it just had to be her. The girl who wouldn't give me the time of day. The shy one who avoided me like the plague.
I know why I do it. It's stupid and adolescent... But she won't even look at me if I don't get up in her face and tell her that she isn't good enough for a man! I've told her she's ugly more times than I can count. I've told her she's worthless and useless... I've said awful things that made her run away and cry.
"I haven't seen her," I respond. It's partially the truth.
I did see her at the pharmacy grabbing something, but I made sure she didn't see me. If she'd seen me she would've run away, and I don't like it when she does that.
"Did you need me to go talk to her?" Jay chuckled. The dude is already wasted and he's only had one beer. That is not normal. I'm seriously worried about the dude. Maybe I should take him home and give him some water or something.
"Jay, you feeling okay?" I ask.
Suddenly, Braxton is charging through the front door, coming right for us. He looks like he's ready for a fight, but I don't know why he is doing this. What the hell does he have to prove? Jason is piss drunk and not acting normal. He doesn't need Brax to knock him down.
"Jeff just told me, you've been screwing Anna and Michelle! You can't just stick with Jennifer can you? How many do you need? Why the hell are you trying to get with my girl?" Brax demands, rage distorting his face in the shadows.
I thought we were over this conversation. Why the hell does Brax even care right now? Can't they talk about this like adults? Besides, it's not like he wasn't with Trish last night! We all know it, so why is he even bothering with this whole damn argument? Are both of them on something?
Braxton would not surprised me if he got his hands on something. He's got a few buddies who deal, but most of us stay away from the stuff.
"Brax, you know Jen's been cheating on him! And from what I've heard, Brittany isn't yours anyway. Just go cool down, man!" I try to stop him, but he pushes me out of the way and slams a fist into Jason's gut.
Jay groans, and crumples to the ground for a few seconds. I try to go help him up, but he's growling at Brax, and his eyes are spitting fire. There is something feral in his face and it scares the hell outta me.
Dammit. This is not going to end well! What am I supposed to do in a situation like this? This has never happened before, and I seriously don't like that it's happening now!
"Jay, dude, lets just go back to the apartment," I suggests, trying to defuse the situation. I just need to get him somewhere where he can sleep this off... whatever this is.
"NO! The bastard needs to learn a lesson!" Jay spit out.
And suddenly there are fists flying and blood splattering on the ground. Grunts, groans and cursing.
I really don't want to end up in a damn fight tonight, but my buddy needs to get out of this situation fast. For some reason, he's a lot more sluggish than normal. Jay and Brax are normally pretty even when pitted against each other for a fight.
What the hell is going on?
Finally having enough I step in, trying to pull Jason out of the way when Braxton shoves me away from Jay and I end up hitting my head against the wall. Damn that hurt. However, my blurry eyes pick up a flash as Brax produces a knife out of hell knows where and stabs Jay in the gut.
I try to jump to my feet, but I'm still unsteady, but it doesn't stop me from rushing over to my best friend. I pull my friend into my arms, trying to steady us both.
"Jay? You alright man?" I choke.
There is a grunt and suddenly Jason's dead wait. I try to keep him up, but I can't seem to get a good grip on him. And then I realize all the blood spilling from his wound. I think I'm going to be sick! This looks really bad!
My knees buckle, and I carefully lower him to the ground. My heart stops as I look down at my best friend. I'm starting to panic, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I know panic is not going to help him.
"Jay, man... Hold on. I'll get help!" I promise, covering the wound with one hand and trying to grab my phone with the other. My entire body is shaking right now. I can't seem to make my fingers work. What is wrong with me?
But out of nowhere, Ian and Danny are rushing to our side. It's about damn time! Where the hell were they when I needed them? They could've stopped this if they had been here 2 minutes sooner!
"What the hell happened?" Danny yells, trying to yank me away from Jason's body. But I refuse to move! I can't move my hand! He'll die! Can't they see that?!
"Kurt stabbed Jay!" Braxton yells.
Say what now? I look over at Braxon completely in shock. What the hell did he tell them that for? He knows I sure as hell didn't have the knife! It was him!
"NO! I didn't!" I deny. "He... I... We..." I swallow hard, trying to get my mouth to work, but I don't seem to be making coherent sentences.
"Kurt..." Jay chokes, blood dripping from his mouth. He looked up in my eyes, and I didn't know I was crying until I saw that a tear landed on his cheek.
"Jay," my voice comes out as a broke whisper.
"See, even Jason knows it was him!" Braxton snarls.
My heart drops to my stomach as I watch Jason take his last breath. What the hell just happened?
