Chapter 1
Skye’s POV
I’ve first met Kayla when we were in kindergarten, I remembered seeing a cute pig-tailed girl crying beside the playhouse all alone, and so me being me, approached her. We quickly became best friends after that.
Since my mom died because of a car accident, my dad was both my parent and first best friend, so when I met Kayla, I excitedly told stories about her to my dad. Kindergarten was only a short time though, so we thought we’d get separated then one day we found out that my dad and Kayla’s mom used to be friends back in high school, so basically our families became friends with each other. Kayla’s mom and her sister, who is just a year older, treated me like family and same goes for Kayla, my dad treated her like family as well then later on they told us that they were going to enroll us in the same school, we were overjoyed and since then we became inseparable.
As the years went on I realized that I’m different from other girls, my female classmates were looking at the cute little boy by the swing while my attention was on one of my pretty female classmate, but of course I was still young so I still didn’t know what it means until I reached fifth grade, that’s when I realized what the word “lesbian” means, which is what I am. I decided to tell my dad about my sexuality and he understood and accepted me. He kept saying “I love you no matter what” and “don’t change yourself for other people, be you”. He was always very supportive of me.
It took me quite a while to tell Kayla that I’m a lesbian but since she’s my very best friend, I decided to tell her. So one afternoon, I just simply told Kayla, “I’m gay”. I expected to see her shocked expression but I didn’t, what I saw was happiness;
She was smiling, “Finally.”
Turns out she already knew, when I asked her how, she replied, “well, it is obvious, while I’m looking at a boy, your eyes are jumping from one girl to another” she giggled and hugged me, “no matter what, we’re always gonna be best friends, so don’t hide anything from me.”
Later on, I found out that Aunt Liz and Alice also knew about my sexuality and they fully accepted me. I thought that after I come out, everything will change. I was mostly wrong, nothing changed at all. My dad treated me the same although he started reading LGBT-themed books, I guess he wanted to understand my sexuality more. Same goes with Kayla’s family, they stayed the same which of course, brought me extreme happiness.
Years went on and Kayla and I graduated grade school and began high school. Kayla and I both got into a relationship too. Now it’s almost the end of our senior year in high school, so we’re all busy preparing for college.
“Hey Kayla! Are you done? We’re going to be late!” I shouted from the dining room.
“Yeah! I’m coming!” Kayla shouted back as she walked towards the kitchen.
“She slept in again?” Dad asked.
“Yep” I simply replied.
“And you didn’t wake her?”
“Well, I tried, she just kept on snoring” I said then took a bite of my pancake.
“I was not snoring!” Kayla walked in, grabbing the seat next to mine, “I was sleeping heavily”
“Of course you were” I teased “hurry up and eat, I wanna see what kind of booths they’re preparing for tomorrow.”
Kayla reached and grabbed a fork, dad then handed her a plate of pancakes. She smiled and thanked dad while I continued eating.
“So since graduation is nearby, what course you two are planning on taking?” Dad asked as he started cleaning the pan he used to make the pancakes.
“We’re planning on taking performing arts, right Skye?” Kayla excitedly announced, turning to me, waiting for me to back up this plan of hers.
But instead, I choked on my pancakes. Theater was never in my plans.
“Theater? I didn’t know you’re planning on taking that Skye” Dad said, obviously surprised.
I sighed, “That’s because I’m not taking it”
“What?” Kayla quickly reacted “I thought we’re going to take the same course and I’m sure you like acting”
“Yeah, I like acting but I love cooking and baking” I countered,“So I’m planning on taking culinary arts, is that okay with you, Dad?”
“Of course it is, as long as you do your best, you too Kayla” he smiled. Dad was one heck of a supportive man, as long as you’re not doing anything illegal of course.
“Thanks uncle Tom” Kayla showed my dad a small smile and suddenly became quiet.
After breakfast, we hurriedly left my house and went straight to school. Kayla hasn’t spoken a word throughout the whole trip and even during class which of course, bothered me to no end.
And since her seat is in front of me, I finally decided to ask.
“Hey...” I whispered, slightly pulling her uniform but she just ignored me. I did it again and again but she still ignored me so I pulled her uniform harder.
“What?!” she responded, quite annoyed as she slapped away my hand.
“What do you mean what?” I said “you’re the one who’s ignoring me! You tell me what’s up!”
Kayla rolled her eyes and turned her back on me. I tried to get her attention again but she continued to ignore me and eventually I gave up for now.
After classes, I planned to try and clear things out between us but she decided to completely ignore me by going home first and leaving me behind. Of course, I was pissed but you know, two pissed off girls won’t make the world any better, so I decided to brush it off and go after her instead.
I ran towards home as fast as I could and found her walking by the big mango tree a few blocks away from her house. When she saw me coming, she started walking faster so I sprinted towards her.
“Kayla! Come on! How am I supposed to know what’s wrong if you won’t talk to me!” I yelled as I ran after her, reaching out and finally grabbing her arm.
I stopped in my tracks and pulled her to a stop as well, “C’mon Kayla, what’s wrong?” I asked, still catching my breath.
Kayla turned and said, “Why didn’t you tell me you were planning on taking culinary arts?”
I stared at her, confused, “Is that the reason why you’re so upset?”
Kayla crossed her arms, “Of course it is Skye! Didn’t we talk about it before that we’re going to take up the same course!”
“That was like 2 years ago dude, do you really think that could happen? And why are you forcing me to go take the course you like? Don’t you have a boyfriend you could do that with?” I said sarcastically.
Because honestly, even if Kayla was my best friend, we still were two different individuals, we have lives of our own and new adventures to take.
Kayla’s arms fell to her sides in defeat, “I’m not forcing you into anything Skye…”
“Then why the heck are you so upset?!”
“It’s just that…I want to spend more time with you. That’s all” she replied, sulking like a sad puppy.
I looked at Kayla, amused at her reasoning. Admittedly, she’s cute when she’s like this. ”You’re kidding right?”
Kayla looked at me and raised her brow, looking all dead serious which made me laugh, “You’re basically living in my house dude and the same goes for me. We practically spend almost every freaking minute together!”
“I know that!” she responded, “I just don’t want us to drift apart!”
I sighed then showed her a smile, “That would never happen and you know that” then I reached and held her hand “and besides, even if we’re taking different courses, we’ll still go to the same university right?”
“So, I’ll still get to see you’re stupid dorky face?”
I rolled my eyes teasingly, “yes you still will, maybe not all the time though”
Kayla turned to me and smirked, “I guess I can live with that”
I fake laughed as I put my arm around her shoulders, “Honestly, you worry too much”
“Only when it concerns you” she giggled
After that silly misunderstanding, we decided to go to her house for dinner. It is a Tuesday after all which means….
“Hey you two! What do you want for dinner?” Aunt Liz asked the moment she saw us enter the house.
That’s right. On Tuesdays, we get to decide what’s for dinner!
“Pizza and pasta sounds good!” Kayla immediately replied, nudging me a bit.
Of course, I agreed with her.Pizza and pasta was a pair that’s difficult to resist.
In the midst of this delicious conversation, my cell phone rang. I pulled it out from my pocket and answered it, “hello?...no...okay, I’ll be right there....okay…bye!”
“Who was that?” Kayla asked, peeking at my phone.
“It was Tammy, She wants me to go meet her” I replied while putting my phone back into my pocket.
“Now?! And you’re going?”
“Of course I am” I said made my way towards the door, putting back my shoes in the process “Aunt Liz I’m leaving for a bit!” I announced.
Kayla followed me and asked “But what about dinner?”
“I’ll try to get back here on time, but if I don’t make it, then leave a few slices for me!”
I opened the door and saw Andrew standing outside, about to ring the doorbell,
“Uh, hi” he said, his hand still raised towards the doorbell.
“Uh, hi to you too” I replied “and uh bye!” then passed beside him, leaving Kayla behind.
“Wait, you’re leaving already?” he asked but I just continued to walk. Andrew then turned to Kayla, “she’s leaving already?”
“Unfortunately yes” Kayla simply replied.
I looked back and waved at both of them, “I’m going to see Tammy! Bye Kayla!” I said and started running.
I arrived at the park 25 minutes later, and saw Tammy sitting on the swings.
I quickly went to her and kissed her lightly, “hey, sorry I took so long” and from there I could sense that she’s unhappy, “is there something wrong?”
“Yes there is” Tammy replied.
“Um…mind telling me?”
Tammy looked straight at me and said, “You’re with Kayla again, aren’t you?”
I nodded, “We’re going to have dinner at her house and…” but before I could finish my sentence, Tammy stood up and started to walk away,
What is up with people today? Why does everyone kept brushing me off?
Of course I quickly ran after her, she’s my girl friend after all.
“C’mon babe, don’t be like that” I said as I grabbed Tammy’s hand “please…?”
Tammy sighed and turned around, still very much unhappy.
“Tell me what’s bothering you, so I can fix it” I said
“What’s bothering me is the fact that you’re always with Kayla” she said blatantly.
“Not this again. How many times do I have to tell you, Kayla is just my best friend. That’s it, nothing more, nothing less”
“But why do I feel like you spend more time with her than with me and it seems that you care for her more than you care for me!”
I quickly pulled Tammy into a hug and reassured her, “You know that’s not true. I care about you a lot and I’m not gonna lie, I care about Kayla too but there’s a big difference between you and her. It’s the fact that I fell in love with you” I cupped her cheek and kissed her, “I love you Tammy”
Tammy stared at me and finally showed that beautiful smile of hers, “I love you too Skye”
I smiled brightly as I held her close, “so we’re cool?”
“Yeah but I still want you to spend more time with me, okay?”
“Okay, but please don’t be jealous of Kayla anymore because there’s basically nothing to be jealous of. She’s straight as a flagpole and has a boyfriend”
“I had a boyfriend too before I met you” Tammy countered.
“Yeah but you were attracted to me the moment we met! I was so charming you forgot you were supposed to be straight!”
Tammy playfully pinched my nose, “you adorable little shit” then kissed me on the lips
Man, having a girl friend sure is fun.
Kayla’s POV
The three of us, mom, Andrew and I, were all In the dining table. Enjoying our meal, well, at least they are.
“Is Skye still coming?” Mom asked then took a bite of her pizza
“No…she texted me earlier, said she won’t make it”
To tell you the truth, I’m kinda pissed that Skye left so suddenly. I understand it’s because of her girlfriend, but still!
“She’s probably busy hanging out with Tammy” Andrew interjected, twirling the pasta in his fork
Mom looked at me and asked, “Is that why she suddenly left?”
“Yeah” I replied “Tammy called her earlier, so she hurriedly went to her” then I reached and drank my iced tea.
“Are you okay with that?” Mom questioned.
A question that caught me so off guard, the iced tea I just drank went to a different pipe.
“What do you mean mom?” I asked, coughing a bit, “Of course I’m okay with that, she is her girlfriend after all!”
Mom took her drink and calmly said, “I’m talking about the pasta, honey” and then took a gulp.
“Oh…yeah, it’s okay”
And the three of us continued eating, although I stayed silent all throughout. What does my mom want to imply when she asked if I’m okay with Skye leaving me to go to her girlfriend?
After dinner, Andrew wanted to hang out with me a bit more, but I was just not feeling it. So I said I was having cramps and just gonna head to bed to get some rest. Of course, he quickly understood. After a kiss goodnight, he finally left.
I took a quick shower and dialed Skye’s number as I dry my hair. Put the phone on loud speaker so I could use both of my hands.
“Hello?” Skye answered.
“Hey ugly!” I greeted.
“Oh hey uglier! what’s up?”
“Not much, just wanted to know how your day went, you know, with Tammy”
“Oh it’s great, we had a little misunderstanding but after that it’s all good, how ’bout you? What did you guys do?”
“Ate dinner and after that we just watch some TV then Andrew left. Oh and mom asked why’d you left all of a sudden”
“And what did you tell Aunt Liz?”
“I told her you went to go see Tammy”
“Can you tell her I’m sorry and I’ll make it up next time! I’ll buy her ice cream, the dairy-free one so her butt doesn’t explode!”
I laughed out loud. Anything with butts was just so funny to me and Skye knew this all too well.
“Okay, I’ll tell her” I said, “And I’ll tell her about the butt thing too!”
“Thanks! And sorry I guess!” I could hear Skye’s laughter, which was one of my favorite sounds,“hey I gotta go! see you tomorrow, bye!”
Skye had hang up even before I said bye.
I hand the towel on the desk chair and laid on my bed. Tammy and Skye had misunderstanding? I wonder what about? And more importantly, she better not picked a fight with Skye. I really don’t like that girl.
Maybe I’ll ask Skye about that tomorrow.
After a few minutes of rolling around on my bed, I finally fell asleep.
