Summary

My name is Mackenzie, and I had a perfect life, until it was not. My fiancé cheated on me with one of my two best friends, my boss fired me because the other assistant lied. As I moved in with my only other best friend, I started listening to radio late at night, because the picture of those cheating bastards was haunting me, and I could not sleep. And as I listened, I found him and his magical voice. It was as if he spoke to me directly. And than, I called one night, and those anonymous calls became my saving grace, and slowly I started loving him after dusk. My name is Alex and I work at a radio station in a show that gets aired at night. To my surprise my show, Love after dusk, was a huge success among the female population, but none of them piqued my interest, that is until she called. The mystery woman was funny, sarcastic and had just the right amount of sass in her words to make me start loving her after dusk... Both have broken hearts, do not trust easily, they feel safe when they speak on the radio. There are no names, no one knows you, no one sees you, and you can be yourself, no need to pretend. What will happen when they meet each other in real life? Will they recognize each other and try their luck in love? Or will they turn their backs on real love, so they can enjoy the radio love a bit longer? One thing is for sure. Love will start after dusk...

Chapter 1

Mackenzie’s POV

My life at the moment is perfect. I have everything a woman could ever want.

A job that I love, and which provides me a quiet luxury life, a fiancé that I love unconditionally, and he loves me just as well. To top everything off, I have my best friends Lauren and Gavin, but I mostly spend time with them separately, because somehow, for unknown reasons to me, they do not get along. And I also have a dog Speedy. He is a pit-bull and a loving cuddly one as well which suit me just fine.

Oh, I almost forgot. My name is Mackenzie Sutton, soon to be Wagner, to be precise the day will be next month. And right now, I am on my way to my dream job, just as every day. If you are maybe wondering, I am a professional assistant to a super model. It is most definitely not an easy job, but so far, I managed to accomplish everything that I have been told so I would say I am on the right path. But there sure were downfalls as well. As a super model, my client had a lot of wishes and demands, so as a result she needed more than one assistant, so there were two more assistants beside me. One was her personal, personal assistant, meaning she was taking care of dates, her wardrobe and so on. And me and Lucy were in charge of her meetings, working schedule, ordering cars, arranging plane tickets and so on, you get the drill.

But you see, me and Lucy did not see eye to eye on a good day and on those bad ones, we were at each other’s throats. I wish I could say I was the better person, but it was a competition between us, who was a better assistant because we had two months to prove ourselves, than one would be promoted and the other would stay the bitch for little errands who no one liked in our line of work.

And honestly neither me nor Lucy played a fair game. We were aiming to destroy each other and until this moment I really thought I was winning. Damn did I underestimate the woman. As soon as I stepped inside Stephanie’s apartment on the top floor the screaming began, “You useless idiot! Why would you not arrange my diet as it should be? Now I gained a few pounds and there is no way I will be ready in time for the new swimsuit photo shooting!” and all I could do was stare at her in complete horror because I had no idea what was going on.

All I knew was that she was as red as a tomato and she was screaming about something that I was not in charge of, Lucy was… just as her name popped in my head I knew what was going on and when I looked behind Stephanie and saw Lucy’s evil smile I knew I was right, but I also knew it was pointless to defend myself, because Stephanie had no idea what our name’s even were, and I am sure Lucy already made sure that I looked guilty in every way possible, so my best bet right now was to apologize and hope for the best case scenario to unfold, “I am so sorry Miss. Stephanie, it was not my intention. I am sure we can make things work and get you ready in time with the right diet…” I was not even halfway done with my speech when she interrupted me, “It will sure not happen again because you are fired. Get out of my apartment and away from me! Right now! I do not want to see your ugly face ever again!”

Well, there goes my dream job. Since I knew there was not much I can do with a hysterical diva, I rather gave her a nod, turned my back on them both and walked out of the apartment. One of my legs was already inside of the elevator when I heard my name being called from behind me. As I turned around, I saw Lucy, which was kind of a surprise to me. What did she want now? She already won, what else could she take from me?

“Mack! Wait! I just wanted to say that I truly am sorry, if there was any other way to solve this thing between us I would grab it, but we both know there was not, “ I gave her a skeptical look, which told her that I think she is full of shit and a moment later that evil smirk returned on her lips, proving me right once again, “Oh, who am I shitting. Of course, I am not sorry, I enjoyed every moment of destroying you, and I sincerely hope you have the worse day there could be. Bye bye.”

Should I be losing words with such a conniving bitch? I do not think so, instead I just stepped the rest of the way into the elevator and watched her stunned face when I showed her the middle finger right before the doors got completely closed. I know, childish, but I fucking do not care. It made me feel a bit better.

As I exited the building, I pulled out my phone to call Lauren, but the call went straight to voice mail. Weird. I did not even try with George, my fiancé, because I knew he was working so my next option would be Gavin, so I dialed his number, and lucky me, at least he was always available as it looks like. Really the perfect definition of a best friend if you ask me, “Hey Mack. What is going on?”

Surprisingly, I was not on the verge of tears even though I just lost my dream job, and even as I spoke, my voice remained steady and neutral, or maybe it was a bit pissed but that is it, no other sad emotions were present, “Hey Gavin. Guess what? I just lost my job because Lucy is a lying bitch.”

As soon as the words left my mouth Gavin started laughing uncontrollably and just a moment later, I started laughing as well. You might be asking yourself why I am laughing at such a moment, but in my opinion, laughter was better than sadness and crying, and if I was being honest with myself, the whole thing was kind of funny and ironic. I always thought I would win Stephanie over with my good work, but at the end of the day, the person who was eviler, won. And I was just not an evil person.

“Mack do not let those bitches get to you. They deserve each other, believe me. And you on the other hand are too good for that world anyways. Just as you are too good for George.” And that was why lately Gavin was my last option when I had to speak to someone. Not because I did not love him, because I do. He was like a brother I never had, but it looked like he had a hard time accepting George, while on the other hand Lauren was completely excited. But that was just the way they were. Complete opposites.

“I know what your opinion is on George, but could we not argue about it for one day please? I need some cheerful company on my way home, not someone to argue with.” A heavy sigh followed my request but a moment later he answered me, just as I knew he would, “Sure pumpkin. You are lucky that I am gay, or I would seduce you a long time ago and George would not even have a chance to be in the picture.” Once again, a fit of laughter attacked me. And true to his word, Gavin kept me company all the way to my apartment and did not mention George anymore.

As I rummaged through my bag to find my keys, Gavin was just in the middle of some funny story from his work, and believe me he had many of those, since he was a waiter. I put the key in the lock, but surprisingly nothing happened, then I tried the doorknob and weird enough, the door opened. Did I leave it unlocked? Just as I thought about all the possible scenarios, I could hear something break inside the apartment, “Gavin. I think someone broke into my apartment. Would you mind staying on the line with me in case something goes wrong?”

Gavin was usually a jokester, but he got completely serious in a moment at my words, “Mackenzie, do not be stupid! Turn around and call the police if you have someone inside the apartment!” I knew his words were logical and it was something that I should do, but something inside me was pulling me towards that door, “Maybe it is just George. Maybe he came from work earlier.” Gavin went completely quiet at my words, and I looked at the phone, making sure the call was still connected. When I confirmed it was, I took his silence as a yes, to stay on the line with me, so I entered the apartment and followed those weird noises and crashes.

Surprisingly, it was coming from the bedroom I shared with George. Weird if you ask me, because any reasonable person would go for the office first, especially in our apartment since the safe was clearly visible from the hallway.

The closer I got to the bedroom, the clearer it became, there was no thief in my apartment. Why? Because I could hear moaning. And as much as I tried to convince myself that it could not be true, deep down I knew it was. And as I silently and slowly opened my bedroom door, my biggest fear was confirmed. There on the bed, which I shared with my fiancé every night was no other than the fiancé I was talking about and on top of him was my so-called best friend, Lauren. The betrayal hurt more than Lucy’s or Stephanie’s words ever could.

I was just standing there looking at them in horror, when George suddenly turned my way and pure shock and horror overtook his face, “Mackenzie! It is not what it looks like. Baby let’s talk! We can work things out!” at his words I was finally able to move and at the same time a hysterical fit of laughter attacked my body, “It is not what it looks like? To me it looks like you are cheating me with my best friend. I can not believe you guys. What did I ever do to you two?” Lauren looked at me with pure hatred and disdain and that look shocked me more than what they were doing. And at that moment, I had enough. So, for the second time today, I walked out of the apartment, this time, from my own. After a few moments I realized Gavin was still waiting on the other side of the phone, “Hey, Gavin. Does the offer to use your guest room still stand?”

“Any time pumpkin. Any time.” And that is when the waterfall started, “I, I am on my-y wa-a-ay.” I told him between sobs, but he did not let me down, my hero in shining armor, “Wait for me there. I will be there in five minutes.” And before I could object or thank him, he already disconnected the call, so I just sat down on the bench in front of my former apartment building you could say. Tonight, I will allow myself to wallow in self-pity, but tomorrow I will put myself back together and prove to everyone that hurt me today, that I am stronger than they thought.
