Prologue
All stories are true.
That is what Jace said to Clary at the end of City of Bones.
Even though my love for the series went beyond simple understanding, I never thought how apt that line would be in my own life.
Everything is a lie.
My life, my friends, my parents….
Everything.
My life was upended with zero warning, but then again most incidents like this one has the tendency to show up unannounced and then wreck everything.
So I said fuck it.
Who the damn fuck cares if an introverted, socially anxious bookworm lost the very roots that make up her life?
No one.
I had to learn that the hard way.
Along with that bitch that called herself my friend.
I wasn’t born like this.
But then again… Nobody is.
As I stand over the cliff, the wind blowing in my ears, I can feel the power under my skin waiting to be unleashed into the wild.
For the first time, I am tempted to.
It would be so damn easy.
A simple action that will make the world burn.
I take one one more step, closer to the edge. If I look down, I can see the emerald surface of the Dragonfly Cove, stretching around below me.
It was the first place I saw when I came here.
Seems fitting it would be the last.
I have heard a lot that a fall from this height would turn the water to cement. Not literally, of course.
Never literally.
Humans.
Such ignorant creatures. Yet they craft truths better than anyone else in this wide expanse we call the universe.
Maybe we are the fools for keeping them at an arm’s length wherever we go.
I let my hair down from the bun on top of my head and relish the feeling of it whipping around my face.
It is quite shocking how quickly I accepted this life of living under the shadows, but then again, considering my living conditions, I suppose I would have welcomed any option.
It would have been an exceptional one had it not been for the Celestial Authority.
Chosen of the Creator, my foot.
They are liars, every single one of them. Everything they say is shit.
I allow myself a small smile when I feel them coming behind me.
They had to come, they knew that as well as me.
Such is the extend of my power.
I will admit I didn’t know a single thing when I came here.
But that was 2 years ago. I grew and so did my decisions.
They thought that they could fool me. That I was a child they could lie to and make a puppet of.
I will make them pay.
For everything they did and everything they thought they could do.
That is for sure.
But there is something I need before I can get to that part.
Down below me, I can see the calm surface of the lake starting to ripple.
The wind around me turn into a perfect gale, blowing the skirts of my dress around me.
It’s not time yet.
A few minutes more.
I will hunt them down.
Each and everyone of them.
I will be what they thought I would be. I tried to change to fit myself among them.
But only a fool would do that. I am certainly not one anymore.
At the last second, on a spur of the moment, I do one last thing before stepping off the ledge as easily as one might jump into a ball pit in the human world.
They will not forget me.
Not now. Not ever.
With that comforting thought, I close my eyes against the sight of the fast approaching lake and embrace the warmth of what awaits me.
