PART 1 : THE OUTSIDER

Eric Davis was a ghost in the city of Grayson—always watching, rarely seen. The sprawling metropolis pulsed with restless energy, vast glass towers clawing at the steel-gray sky above narrow alleys where the rain pooled in cracked sidewalks. Among the ceaseless flow of people and neon-lit distractions, Eric’s presence was quiet but steady, a needle threading unnoticed through the city’s ragged fabric.

His office was cramped and modest—an attic room wedged between a shabby coffee stall and a forgotten bookstore on Maple Street. The walls were stained with smoke and time, peeling paint curling at the corners. A single flickering fluorescent lamp hummed overhead, doing little to chase away the heavy summer heat that seeped through cracked windows. A spindly ceiling fan churned lazily, its dusty blades stirring the stale air.

On the door, a faded sign read, “Eric Davis — Private Investigator.” Few would have guessed that inside this modest room sat a man consumed by a singular dream: to become a detective worthy of the heroes in the pages of his worn books.

From boyhood, Eric had been obsessed with mystery and justice. His heroes Holmes, Marlowe, and Poirot were more than characters; they were standards he struggled to live up to. But Eric had no badge, no formal training, no mentors offering guidance. Instead, he had a sharp mind, an unyielding curiosity, and a stubborn hope.

His days followed a grim pattern: submitting application after application to police departments and detective agencies, always met with silence or rejection. The odd client who stumbled into his office usually sought help with petty troubles a missing dog, a cheating spouse, a dispute with a landlord. Yet even these minor cases were opportunities to sharpen his craft.

Each morning before the city’s cacophony began, Eric sat by the dusty window with a chipped mug of black coffee, sifting through local newspapers and crime reports, hunting for threads no one else cared to pull. Secrets lurked beneath Grayson’s surface, forgotten details, dismissed accusations, and whispered rumors. Eric believed with conviction that justice could be found in these shadows. He just had to find a way to bring it to light.
