Chapter 1: The Forbidden Toy

Emi adjusted her scarf against the chill of the late autumn air as she stepped into the quaint, cluttered shop tucked away in a forgotten alley. The sign above the door read "Mysterious Curiosities", its paint peeling and faded. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of aged paper, wood, and something else—something faintly metallic and strange.

The shopkeeper, an elderly man with sharp eyes and a crooked smile, looked up from behind a cluttered counter. "Looking for something special?" he asked, voice gravelly but warm.

Emi nodded, her gaze drifting across shelves filled with odd trinkets, faded photographs, and bizarre artifacts. Her eyes settled on a small glass case near the back, illuminated by a flickering bulb. Inside was a single doll—about a foot tall, with a painted-on smile that stretched a little too wide. Its eyes, glossy and black, seemed to follow her as she moved.

"That one," Emi whispered, captivated. "What's its story?"

The shopkeeper’s eyes gleamed with a strange light. "Ah, that’s Labubu," he said softly. "A doll with a past darker than the night. It’s said to be cursed—haunted by the spirit of a child lost long ago."

Emi hesitated. The doll’s smile was unsettling, yet strangely charming. "Why is it here?"

He shrugged. "No one wants it. Too many reports of misfortune. But if you feel something about it, perhaps you’re meant to take it."

Without a second thought, Emi purchased the doll, feeling a thrill of excitement and unease. She paid in cash, clutching the small package tightly as she left the shop.

Later that evening, she arrived home, the doll wrapped carefully in tissue paper. She placed it on her bedside table, admiring its uncanny grin. That night, as the wind howled outside, Emi drifted into sleep, unaware of the darkness that was awakening within her new possession.
